Ce sentier vous fera cheminer de part et d'autre, ce sera l'occasion de voir des paysages très contrastés : Steppes des Causses et les petits bataillons de buis épars, forêts profondes des versants de l’Aigoual, gorges abruptes et vertes de pins sylvestres, corniches fendues, sculptées par les éléments, ravins pleins de recoins où quelques arbres, miracle, ont trouvé une poche de terre. On this trail, discover a very agricultural village, a restored dovecote, the flora of the causses, Neolithic man and the anecdote of the 3 bishops. An easy hike for the whole family. The atmosphere of the Causse is spectacular, with its vast stretches of desert and its silence. A few burning bushes and boxwoods add to the rugged authenticity of the land. The hamlet of Les Mazes is on the Causse Noir. Here, the land is arid, and sheep are king. And the 3 bishops? When the départements were created, around 1790, the 3 bishops of Gard, Lozère and Aveyron got together and deposited this cross at the boundaries. These two trails, located on the small Causse de Canayère, offer you a fabulous trip back in time, at the scale of geological times but also, at the scale of the occupation of the site by the man, from the prehistory up to 'nowadays. Ces deux sentiers, situés sur le petit causse de Canayère, vous proposent un fabuleux voyage dans le temps, à l'échelle des temps géologiques mais aussi, à l'échelle de l'occupation du site par l'homme, depuis la préhistoire jusqu'à nos jours. Dénivelé important, bonnes chaussures recommandées. Sentier de découverte D’est en ouest, il parcourt près de cent millions d’années. Il passe des terrains calcaires, déposés là pendant l’ère secondaire par une mer peu profonde, au socle schisteux surgi au Primaire. Il longe des failles le long desquelles des terrains se sont affaissés de plusieurs centaines de mètres, il surplombe un cours d’eau creusant ses gorges depuis près de trois millions d’années. Il permet aussi de deviner, sous ce sol calcaire, les kilomètres de galeries, les puits et les cavités forés par l’eau infiltrée.Les différentes haltes vous permettront également d’appréhender l’influence de l’homme sur son environnement et sur le paysage, et son évolution dans un passé récent, en particulier le passage de milieux ouverts agricoles et habités (hameau, terrasses de culture, moulin, four à chaux, etc.) à des milieux boisés au cours des 150 dernières années. Plusieurs points de vue ponctuent le cheminement, dont ce- lui, particulièrement spectaculaire, au-dessus des gorges du Trévezel . Berceau du reboisement de l'Aigoual, ce hameau semble aujourd'hui abandonné dans son dense écrin forestier. Saint Sauveur révèle pourtant une histoire riche et intense. Parmi la centaine d'espèces d'arbres présentes dans l'arboretum, partez à la découverte du Pin pleureur de l'Himalaya, de l'Araucaria, du Cyprès de Lawson, de nombreux feuillus et profitez de la vue sur le hameau à travers l'alignement de Calocèdres. Sentier sans difficulté particulière, accessible aux familles. Sentier d'interprétation Un grand programme de reboisement a été mené sur le massif de l’Aigoual à la fin du XIXe siècle, sous la houlette du forestier Georges Fabre et du botaniste Charles Flahault. Celui-ci a été parmi les premiers à pressentir l’importance des essences exotiques en matière de reboisement. C’est dans ce contexte et pour étudier le comportement des espèces dans différentes conditions écologiques (altitude, régime des pluies, nature des sols, etc.) qu’un réseau de dix arboretums fut créé entre 1885 et 1903.Saint Sauveur des Pourcils fut l’un des grands domaines agricoles de l’Aigoual, achetés par l’administration forestière à la fin du XIXe siècle. Le hameau ne comporte qu’une église et quelques bâtiments, dont un imposant corps de ferme aux allures de château. Venez découvrir le paysage du Pas de l'Ane, le château d'Espinassous, penser que le castor et la loutre sont tout près, chercher l'alysson à gros fruits, comprendre le pin sylvestre. C'est un sentier en corniche comme on les aime, en belvédère au-dessus des gorges du Trévezel. Ce torrent a profité d'une ligne de faille pour entailler le causse de gorges profondes. Sentier très difficile pour marcheurs confirmés, déconseillé aux familles. Sentier de découverte Superbe balade ou vous découvriez le plateau calcaire du causse noir, descente par un magnifique chemin bâti à l'époque romaine et entretenu par les générations qui ont succédé.  De la vallée du Trévezel vous voici projeté dans une forêt vierge dense ou buis et lianes font parti de cet univers tropical ! Passage très difficile pendant 2 km. Un soulagement quand vous retrouvez le hameau du Villaret et un peu de chaleur! Sentier de découverte C'est de l'extrémité sud-ouest du Causse Noir qu'il s'agit pour cette petite boucle typiquement caussenarde, avec le village de Revens dans le lointain, le Causse Bégon, celui du Larzac, la vallée du Trévezel marquant la limite sud du causse et le massif du Lingas au loin.A la fin de la boucle, vous aurez peut-être la chance d'observer les bisons d'Amérique élevés dans une ferme-auberge proche. C'est aussi un très bon petit parcours de VTT en famille. A very diverse hike through beautiful and changing forests, with rocky stretches and views over the gorges, the river Dourbie, Mont Lingas and Mont St-Guiral. You won't get bored! From the carpark, cross the river Trévezel. Turn left onto a tarred lane, cross a second small bridge, walk for 150 m, and turn right onto a path (signpost for Canayère). By the statue, turn left onto a steep path that leads you among box trees and then through a pine forest to reach a forestry track (turn left towards Canayère). Take this track to get to the forester's house at Canayère. Go past the front of the house, cross the meadow and take the path downhill to reach St-Firmin cave. Continue on this path to get to the intersection with the ONF path way-marked in green (short detour to a viewpoint indicator). Go down to Le Villaret (at the foot of the cliffs is Joulié cave, closed to the public). In Le Villaret, turn right and take the road downhill to return to Trèves.

A former farm turned forester's house in 1880. In the early days of the Mont Aiguoal reforestation, forestry officers lived here year-round during their missions. Forestry workers working on the replanting were allowed to use the outbuildings. Later, only one official resided here. Since 1967, no official has permanently lived here. (B. Mathieu)

In the heart of the hamlet of Saint-Sauveur-des-Pourcils, come and discover one of the seven arboretums on the Aigoual massif, the result of a major reforestation program carried out at the end of the 19th century, Today, this hamlet seems abandoned in its dense forest setting. Yet Saint-Sauveur-des-Pourcils reveals a rich and intense history. Among the hundred or so species of trees in the arboretum, you can discover some exotic species. Saint-Sauveur-des-Pourcils was one of the great agricultural estates of the Aigoual, purchased by the forestry administration at the end of the 19th century. The hamlet has only a church and a few buildings, including an imposing farmhouse resembling a château. Nearby, the walk continues through part of the arboretum, featuring a wide variety of tree species and some remarkable specimens.

In March 1952, Jolly, a forestry official, showed his friend Frayssignes this cave. Deposited in it they discovered the remains of 300 humans from the Neolithic, who had been carefully laid out side by side. The cave was rapidly declared a historical monument. In the depths of the cave, a great number of bear bones was also found. This cave bear, the ancestor of our brown bear (Ursus spelaeus), had a skull 50 cm long! In the winter, groups of these bears would have huddled together in clay wallows at the rear of the caves. Ursus artos succeeded the cave bear and was succeeded in turn by the brown bear, which was hunted to extinction in the 15th century. (B. Mathieu)

Marker 4Felled trees and branches left on the ground in a protected space? That might seem surprising, but at Roquedols Estate, the forest has always been intended to be productive. In the 19th century, Messrs. Breuil, Dayre and Jouve already exploited the woods of Roquedols intensively. Today, tree fellings are planned with the greatest respect for biodiversity. You are in a living forest, whose appearance evolves by human intervention.

Marker 3Men and women have fashioned the Estate according to their needs and wishes. At Roquedols, crops used to be irrigated with water from the Pauchètes stream. In fact, the path you have just been walking on may have struck you as narrow and stony. It follows a former béal, or small irrigation channel. Much later, ornamental landscaping was laid out, including this beautiful archway – which is built on the vestiges of the wall of the former Protestant cemetery!

In Antiquity, the village square was a cemetery. The name Trèves is believed to derive from the Gaulish trebo – meaning 'village' according to some sources or the Celtic water goddess according to others – or perhaps from trivium, crossroads... The track going over the Roman bridge at Le Trévezel, restored in the 18th century, was in fact an important road in Antiquity. There is another hypothesis if you consult Boissier de Sauvages' 1820 dictionary, in whose opinion Treva or Trebo are Occitan words referring to phantoms or spirits. You might well be tempted by this version once you know the history of the Pas de Joulié cave described below! (B. Mathieu)

Water reservoir located in the commune of Trèves. It is fed by the Trèvezel river, which rises in the Cévennes on the oceanic slopes of Mont Aigoual. The river forms its bed in the Gorges du Trèvezel as far as the village of Trèves, before continuing on to flow into "La Dourbie". A site where bathing water quality is regularly monitored.
