On this trail, discover a very agricultural village, a restored dovecote, the flora of the causses, Neolithic man and the anecdote of the 3 bishops. An easy hike for the whole family. The atmosphere of the Causse is spectacular, with its vast stretches of desert and its silence. A few burning bushes and boxwoods add to the rugged authenticity of the land. The hamlet of Les Mazes is on the Causse Noir. Here, the land is arid, and sheep are king. And the 3 bishops? When the départements were created, around 1790, the 3 bishops of Gard, Lozère and Aveyron got together and deposited this cross at the boundaries. The small Canayère plateau offers a fabulous journey through time, on the scale of geological time but also, on the scale of the occupation of the site by man, from prehistory to the present day. The various stops along this trail will allow you to understand the influence of humankind on its environment and landscape, its evolution in the recent past, as you traverse open agricultural and inhabited areas (hamlets, terraced fields, mills, lime kilns, etc.) and wooded areas over the last 150 years. This discovery trail of the small Causse de Canayère is a fabulous journey through time, on the scale of geological time but also, on the scale of the occupation of the site by man, from prehistory to the present day.. This trail spans nearly one hundred million years. It leads from limestone deposits laid down during the Mesozoic Era by a shallow sea, to the schist bedrock that emerged during the Paleozoic Era. It follows fault lines along which the land has subsided by hundreds of meters, and it overlooks a stream that has been carving its gorges for nearly three million years. It also allows us to glimpse, beneath this limestone soil, the kilometers of galleries, shafts, and cavities created by infiltrating water. Enjoy your journey, then, through space and time! Berceau du reboisement de l'Aigoual, ce hameau semble aujourd'hui abandonné dans son dense écrin forestier. Saint Sauveur révèle pourtant une histoire riche et intense. Parmi la centaine d'espèces d'arbres présentes dans l'arboretum, partez à la découverte du Pin pleureur de l'Himalaya, de l'Araucaria, du Cyprès de Lawson, de nombreux feuillus et profitez de la vue sur le hameau à travers l'alignement de Calocèdres. Sentier d'interprétation Un grand programme de reboisement a été mené sur le massif de l’Aigoual à la fin du XIXe siècle, sous la houlette du forestier Georges Fabre et du botaniste Charles Flahault. Celui-ci a été parmi les premiers à pressentir l’importance des essences exotiques en matière de reboisement. C’est dans ce contexte et pour étudier le comportement des espèces dans différentes conditions écologiques (altitude, régime des pluies, nature des sols, etc.) qu’un réseau de dix arboretums fut créé entre 1885 et 1903.Saint Sauveur des Pourcils fut l’un des grands domaines agricoles de l’Aigoual, achetés par l’administration forestière à la fin du XIXe siècle. Le hameau ne comporte qu’une église et quelques bâtiments, dont un imposant corps de ferme aux allures de château. Venez découvrir le paysage du Pas de l'Ane, le château d'Espinassous, penser que le castor et la loutre sont tout près, chercher l'alysson à gros fruits, comprendre le pin sylvestre. C'est un sentier en corniche comme on les aime, en belvédère au-dessus des gorges du Trévezel. Ce torrent a profité d'une ligne de faille pour entailler le causse de gorges profondes. A very diverse hike through beautiful and changing forests, with rocky stretches and views over the gorges, the river Dourbie, Mont Lingas and Mont St-Guiral. You won't get bored! From the carpark, cross the river Trévezel. Turn left onto a tarred lane, cross a second small bridge, walk for 150 m, and turn right onto a path (signpost for Canayère). By the statue, turn left onto a steep path that leads you among box trees and then through a pine forest to reach a forestry track (turn left towards Canayère). Take this track to get to the forester's house at Canayère. Go past the front of the house, cross the meadow and take the path downhill to reach St-Firmin cave. Continue on this path to get to the intersection with the ONF path way-marked in green (short detour to a viewpoint indicator). Go down to Le Villaret (at the foot of the cliffs is Joulié cave, closed to the public). In Le Villaret, turn right and take the road downhill to return to Trèves.

Bramabiau is one of those grandiose and bizarre works of nature. A veritable cradle of French speleology, the tour is 1 km long and very accessible. A former farm turned forester's house in 1880. In the early days of the Mont Aiguoal reforestation, forestry officers lived here year-round during their missions. Forestry workers working on the replanting were allowed to use the outbuildings. Later, only one official resided here. Since 1967, no official has permanently lived here. (B. Mathieu)

In the heart of the hamlet of Saint-Sauveur-des-Pourcils, come and discover one of the seven arboretums on the Aigoual massif, the result of a major reforestation program carried out at the end of the 19th century, Today, this hamlet seems abandoned in its dense forest setting. Yet Saint-Sauveur-des-Pourcils reveals a rich and intense history. Among the hundred or so species of trees in the arboretum, you can discover some exotic species. Saint-Sauveur-des-Pourcils was one of the great agricultural estates of the Aigoual, purchased by the forestry administration at the end of the 19th century. The hamlet has only a church and a few buildings, including an imposing farmhouse resembling a château. Nearby, the walk continues through part of the arboretum, featuring a wide variety of tree species and some remarkable specimens.

In March 1952, Jolly, a forestry official, showed his friend Frayssignes this cave. Deposited in it they discovered the remains of 300 humans from the Neolithic, who had been carefully laid out side by side. The cave was rapidly declared a historical monument. In the depths of the cave, a great number of bear bones was also found. This cave bear, the ancestor of our brown bear (Ursus spelaeus), had a skull 50 cm long! In the winter, groups of these bears would have huddled together in clay wallows at the rear of the caves. In the 19th century, Messrs. Breuil, Dayre and Jouve already exploited the woods of Roquedols intensively. Today, tree fellings are planned with the greatest respect for biodiversity. You are in a living forest, whose appearance evolves by human intervention.

Marker 3Men and women have fashioned the Estate according to their needs and wishes. At Roquedols, crops used to be irrigated with water from the Pauchètes stream. In fact, the path you have just been walking on may have struck you as narrow and stony. It follows a former béal, or small irrigation channel. Much later, ornamental landscaping was laid out, including this beautiful archway – which is built on the vestiges of the wall of the former Protestant cemetery!

In Antiquity, the village square was a cemetery. The name Trèves is believed to derive from the Gaulish trebo – meaning 'village' according to some sources or the Celtic water goddess according to others – or perhaps from trivium, crossroads... The track going over the Roman bridge at Le Trévezel, restored in the 18th century, was in fact an important road in Antiquity. There is another hypothesis if you consult Boissier de Sauvages' 1820 dictionary, in whose opinion Treva or Trebo are Occitan words referring to phantoms or spirits. You might well be tempted by this version once you know the history of the Pas de Joulié cave described below! (B. Mathieu)
