Hiking trail accessible to all towards the site of Luzençon and its chapel of the 12th century. Enjoy A 360° breathtaking view!Go along the Cernon river on the leftside bank in direction of "Linas".At the first bridge cross the stream then turn left. Go along until the second bridge and cross over. The road leads to the beautiful hamlet of Linas.In the village, take the right path of the cross then leave it 100 m further to follow the one on the left that goes along a field. Reach a first crossway and follow up on the opposite path. At the second crossway keep straight ahead and join on the flat part, a larger track to follow on the left.Go through the hamlet of Crayssaguet until the sheepfold and go along to find a soil path. Once arriving opposite a field go back up the left path.Cross the road and get on the track that goes up on the opposite side until the entrance of Luzençon hamlet. Turn left, then immediatly on the right, the road that goes to the summit of the mound (wonderful panorama on the surronding causses and valley;viewpoint indicator).Come back down the typical small streets that leads to Saint-Georges de Luzençon. Outstanding fountain to see on the way.

By following the ledges of Larzac, dominating the Tarn valley and Millau, an exceptional meeting with the highest Viaduct of the world.From the site of hang gliding of Brunas, go (West) to the vison area of the Viaduct. Follow an causeway on 500m (seen on the whole Viaduct, panels of interpretation). Continue on 500m up to the highly-rated point 715.Leave the GR71D which makes a commitment to the right towards the ledges of Boundoulaou cirque. Continue quite straight ahead on the path through the plateau du Larzac. In the junction with the tarred road, turn to the right on 300m. At the first ceossing turn right on the road leading to Brouzes and Carbon. Continue to the right on 800m, cross the highway (A75) (Thanks to the Viaduct of Millau, the "Méridienne" (highway A75) is the shortest, the most economic and the most fluid way between Paris and the Mediterranean).Make a junction with the GR which follow to the right the road parallel to A75 leading to Bel Air. Cross under the highway and join the farm (wonderful classified restoration).By-pass the farm and make a commitment to the left on a path through box tree and junipers then reach a source (resurgence) feeding a drinking through.Pursue on a narrow path at the foot of the cliffs then join a uncovered collar. Turn 90° to the right on a very steep dirt path (stiff slope on 400m). Reach the summit of the cliffs. Continue to the left on the plateau by following the ledges.           2. Follow on the left the path borrowed on the                 way out to join the site of Brunas. 

This pastoral breakaway which takes place on the upper part of Saint-Rome-de-Cernon is very easy to get to and offers to walkers a view over this village located at the crossroads of roads and hilly areas.Starting point and finish of the hike are located at the carpark, which is on the left side when watching the castle. Walk across a small square and right at the first street (rue du château) take left for approximately 40 m. When reaching the fountain, take to the right the D999 for 40 m. Before the petrol station, take right and walk along the church an ascending slope. Keep on going for 100 m       up to the D31, follow this road for 50 m, and then take a tarred track for 300 m. Right at the first tarred hairpin bend to the left, carry straight on the dirt track. The path first goes through a wooded section then leads to a plateau. Take right up to the D31 and walk across the road to the left. Turn immediately to the right on a tarred track towards Puech Ricard. Carry straight on for 800 m, leaving to your right the road that leads to the Cazals farm. 500 m further, look up at the lavogne (a paved pond to water the flock of sheep). Walk for 200 m and leave to your left a stone cross.    200 m further, fork to the right and take a stone path towards St-Rome-de-Cernon. Keep walking up to a steep path overlooking Saint-Rome and enjoy the panoramic view. Walk to the left side of the castle and the “old graveyard”, then follow to the left a cemented path and you're back to the carpark, the starting point of your hike.

According to legend, the mound is referred to as “the tomb of the giant”. The Sargel mound which culminates at 761 m above sea level, offers  breathtaking views  over Lévézou, the causse of the western Larzac and the Merdelou peak.On the Southern part of the car park take the rue de la passade up to the end of the street, then turn left to walk across the D999 road and carry on along the Avenue de la Cavalerie where you cross the bridge up to the other end and turn left before the railway line on a road that leads to the stadium (signpost).600 m further on, Just before this bridge, leave the road and take a trail along the railway.After 500 m, pass under a second bridge to cross the railway which you overlook now alongside your way. Carry on northwards until you catch sight of a small house (formerly a crossing-keeper's house) located below left.From there, turn sharp right and take the path which ascends the ravine. Leave the path to the right and carry straight on. After 700 m, follow the hair pin bend and continue along an old path lined with dry stone walls which leads to the Cave Basse.This path takes you above the swimming pool and turn left between the buildings. Walk along the trail into a “boussière” (a narrow passage defined by two rows of box trees) and join the path coming from the Cave Haute. Take left and just after right. Now, follow the wide trail ascending towards the mound. The slope becomes steeper and follows a series of hair pin bends. After the 6th bend you arrive on the plateau, where you will see a ruined sheepfold on the right. Walk to the left of the fence, and after a wide bend you will reach the calvary where you can enjoy the beautiful landscape of the surrounding plateaus: the Lévézou, Roquesquatre and the Merdélou.To return, retrace your way back to the Cave Basse (4). When you reach the swimming pool, take the left path which descends towards a dilapidated old barn: The Batisse.The path links up with a small tarmacked road. Follow this road up to the railway. Walk under the bridge that was left aside on the way there (2). Retrace your way back to the car park.

Beautiful panoramas on the village of La Bastide-Pradines, built on its rocky spur, mark this circuit of the Larzac by the Lion's Rock, an easily recognizable ruiniform.From the car park (400 meters after the tunnel, coming from La Bastide-Pradines), return to it on 300 meters, then turn right on 150 meters until the old railway station.Turn right the disused railway on 600 meters (on each side, look at the arches of retaining walls).Be careful at the traffic of the tourist train “Sur les Rails du Larzac” from Easter to All Saints’ Day. Take the trail on the right which rises gently through the woods along the valley before crossing to stay on the right bank.Cross the gate and ascend the valley by a pretty path lined with boxwood, called “bouissière”. The path turns left, crosses a first ravine, then rises steeply along a second ravine. Take the track on the right to the cave of the Resistance (rock shelter).Continue climbing in the same direction. The track becomes a steep gravel path climbing towards the plateau (follow the signs).Walk along the edge of the plateau to the right to the rocks (panorama on the Cernon Valley and the ruiniform rocks of the Larzac Causse; pulsatile anemones, asphodels, orchids depending on the season) and arrive on a track (roman road) climbing from the valley.Possibility to reach the “Le Rocher du Lion“(The rock of the Lion) in 20 minutes go-and-back.Go down the right track.At the junction, veer left taking the path lined with boxwoods on the hillside, cross the short-grass prairies and continue on a path in the pinewood. Turn right to find the car park.

The area displays a rich architectural heritage with several castles scattered all along this biking tour. You start from the Fontaine squareAnd then follow the D999 towards Saint-Affrique for 300 m. Now take the second road to your right (D3) and after 600m turn left onto a small road, then cycle along a trail which runs uphill, firstly among plots of land enclosed with low walls, then through woodland. At the bottom of the hill, you can enjoy the view of Laumière castleAnd then ride to your right uphill for 1 km and pass close to a well and a cross.Take the D3 to your right for 50 m, then get on to the trail which slopes up to the left. A beautiful view opens up and on the horizon is the Bouloc relay mast the top of which is over 1000 m above sea level. Bellow, you can see, the castle of the Mas Rougier hidden among oak treesThe route leads to the hamlet of TierguesWhere you can end your tour by taking one of the mountain biking circuits n° 1-2-3 or 4. Circuit n° 12 heads due north and runs under the road via the oviduct (tunnel that allows ewe flocks to cross a road safely), thus reaches the farm of the CaussanelBy a pleasant and shady track. Cycle up the road for approximately 500 m, and then take the trail to your right that follows the crest line up to the D31Cycle across the road cautiously and head towards the farm of des Axous. 1 km further on, take the turning to the right along a trail lined with high oaks and which turns into in a stony path. Cycle downhill along this tricky path which will lead you right below the castle of Saint-Rome de Cernon, and then to the village centre.

This hike links the amphitheatres of Tournemire and Saint-Paul-des-Fonts, which are both geological treasures and havens for biodiversity. An unforgettable entrance to the Hospitaller country!This leg follows all the GR71C or its alternativeFrom the maison de la vigne, ford the Brias brook, walk along the disused football pitchGet back to the trail that goes to your left towards the back of the amphitheatre. The trail rises progressively before turning into a track that reaches the top of the Tournemire amphitheatre. Walk close to the edge, around the amphitheatre to get to the Grépounac Cross and enjoy the beautiful view over the frontal Causses and the Combalou rock of Roquefort.From the cross, head towards the south-east to reach the D23, take this road for 700 m, and then follow the trail on the right that leads to the Viala du Pas de Jaux tower (notice the superb lavogne).From the Viala tower, the hiking trail takes the road leading to the Mas Baldy for 200 m. At the cross, turn off the road and take left a wide logging road. Before the first major trail intersection, take right a path, leave a lavogne to the right and carry on the grassy path towards the Mas Baldy. Keep going on the small road of la Fage for 800 m.In a curve, take right a path which runs throughout a pastureland and joins a sunken path lined up with box trees. The path leads to the edges of the beautiful amphitheatre of St Paul des Fonts.Walk downhill along a stony path zigzagging on the slopes, cross a brook and carry on towards the village centre.In the village of St Paul des Fonts, turn off the GR71C that ascends the plateau to the left and follow the alternative route towards St Jean d’Alcas. Walk along the Annou brook and soon after the village exit, leave the departmental road and take a small road to the right. Cross the railway line (Béziers to Millau) and, just after take right a trail. Keep going on this main trail up to the D 93.When reaching the D 93, do not cross the road, but take the path to the left. Cross the road a bit further on and follow a sunken path to reach St Jean d’Alcas.

This getaway is accessible to all and provides a spectacular view over Roquefort, the village where «the king of cheeses» is manufactured and that extends at the foot of the Combalou cliffs.Opposite the Tourist Office, turn to the left and take the trail that runs along the football stadium up to the drinking water tap. When reaching the end of the stadium, leave the trail and turn right on a small path. Walk through the housing estate via a tarmac road. Carry straight ahead up to the large white and green building.Leave the building on your right and head to the left to pass behind the municipal workshops, then take left a small shady path. 200 m further on, walk down to the left on a wooden log path up to the intersection of four tracks.Turn right and keep on going up to the road, turn left and walk down to the gatekeeper's house. Cautiously cross the railway, then walk uphill to enter a narrow path lined up with hedges.Then head towards left on a track following the contour line and enjoy the view over Roquefort and the neck de basalte (old volcanic vent). 1500m further on, at the edge of the woodland, walk above a vineyard and carry straight on.When reaching a junction with another trail, appreciate the lovely jasse (sheepfold) in front of you. Turn to the left, walk down to the railway and cross it. Walk across the Soulzon brook and turn left to take the path through the woodland. A few metres further, turn to the right and walk uphill to the road.Walk across the road to reach a path which rises throughout the Conteyne woodland up to the Tourist Office.

At the foot of the renowned Roquefort, a village with a long-standing cheese tradition, let yourself be charmed by a hiking loop which goes into the Soulzon valley through a refreshing undergrowth: a family getaway along the banks of the brook.1 - When you come out of the Tourist Office, turn right alongside the Conteynes wood to the drinking water fountain. Take the little path on the right, and pass through the housing estate on a tarmac road. Continue straight on to a large green and white building. 2 - Leave this on your right and head left behind the municipal workshops, then take a left down a little shaded pathway.At the end of this path, go left down to the crossroads with a wide path and turn left until you reach the sharp bends. Before crossing the river over the footbridge, you can take a return trip to the menhir which is further downstream. 3- Walk along the river on the bank opposite the menhir to the second footbridge.Cross the river again. After 300 m and a small slope, turn left to get back onto the road. 4 - Cross this road to take a path up to the Tourist Office through the Conteynes wood.

This path offers stunning panoramic views over the Larzac, then on the Tournemire amphitheatre and over the village of Roquefort which are the highlights of this hike that provides a glimpse of pastoral life in the past.This is where the name of the path “the ladder path” originates from. Due to a number of landslides, the path has been diverted towards the far end of the Combalou plateau and now follows a staircaseFrom the Tourist Office carpark, walk across the road near the bus stop and walk up the rising path running alongside the graveyard. When the path meets the tarmacked road, turn right then first left following the hairpin bend. 300 m further on, take the fork to the left up to a drinking water fountain.Take the small path that slopes up to the right towards the Combalou plateau.At the base of the scree, first walk uphill to your right, then scale across it.Once you get across the scree, carry on along a marked path that joins a track through box trees following the contour line.When you arrive at the far end of the Combalou, walk uphill until you reach the pierced rock and take the metal staircase.When you get to the plateau, head East in the direction of the relay masts, once  you have reached them, carry on to your right for 200 m and at the hairpin bend fork to the left on the path that leads to the jasse (sheepfold).Walk between the Jasse and the edge of the plateau, keep on walking along the plateau and take a trail through the pinewood. Start walking downhill until you reach the Aiguières pass.Head towards Roquefort and carry straight on past the “Sotch de Balhols” (large geological fault) and walk down to the Saint-Pierre chapel (a flight of steps to the left gives access to a viewpoint indicator). Once you’ve enjoyed the view, descend the steps, and then go to your left down the Créance street and then up the Baragnaudes street which rises up onto the opposite side towards the Quille des Baragnaudes which are impressive vertical monoliths. Walk past the Quilles, then along the cliff and climb down the steps.At the bottom of the steps, take the right and immediately after turn to the left to pass under a porch to get back to the avenue de Lauras that will lead you to the Tourist Office from where you started your hike.

Bramabiau is one of those grandiose and bizarre works of nature. A veritable cradle of French speleology, the tour is 1 km long and very accessible. The Sargels mound, which peaks at 761 m, is residual and was historically part of the Larzac plateau before the surrounding rivers dug their ways through the landscape. It provides a breathtaking view over the Lévézou mounts (snow-capped in winter) to the East, the Larzac foothills to the West and the Merdelou to the South.

Typical of the romanic architecture, this castrale chapel was built between the 11th and 12th centuries. It was then opened to all, for weddings or burrials. The chevet, facing the East is a symbol of the resurrection of Christ. The chapel is usually closed, but you may ask for the key at the city hall in Saint-Georges de Luzençon (tel 05 65 58 41 00). 

This old railway line connected Le Vigan to Tournemire climbing the foothills of the Larzac. It was granted to the Compagnie du Midi in 1883, works began in 1881 and lasted 11 years. Over 60 kilometers, this line has 32 tunnels, 12 viaducts and several kilometers of retaining walls.In 1896, the traffic of the travelers is put in place: 3 trains a day circulate in 2 directions. It takes 2:15 to make Le Vigan - Tournemire and only 2:00 in the opposite direction.The First World War caused the first threats on this line. Since 1917, there was talk of dismantling the rails between Le Vigan and Nant-Comberedonde. Traffic resumed gradually to reach its highest point in 1922, with 372 travelers per day and 33,000 tons for the year.Freight traffic remained alone on the entire line until June 1951.Closed to all traffic in 1952, the railway between Avèze and L'Hospitalet was removed in 1955. In 1960, the rails were removed between L'Hospitalet and Tournemire, then it was decided to hand them over in 1977 as part of the extension project of the military camp of La Cavalerie. The project was abandoned in 1981, no convoy took this section. It is used today by the Vélorail du Larzac in Ste-Eulalie de Cernon.

The municipality of Saint-Rome de Cernon originates from the amalgamation of the former municipality of Montclarat with that of Saint-Rome de Cernon, a process which was carried out in 1840. Ever since prehistoric times, humans have inhabited the Saints-Rome area as evidenced by the Sargels caves and the dolmens situated in the bois de Laumière. Human settlement continued during the Roman and Medieval periods as evidenced by the many remains: the Saint-Rome, Mélac, Montclarat and Laumière castles. Today's village expanded in the late 18th century, during the construction of the road from Albi to the Cévennes, and during the construction of the railway in the 19th century. As a result, the village became a place where important fairs and markets were held and has hosted many prospering trading activities.

The Hospitallers traced a mule track linking La Bastide-Prandines to the commandery of Saint-Félix de Sorgues and passed through Viala-du-Pas de Jaux. This medieval way, whose real name is “carrière cave” (path cashed) accesses the plateau near a large roc having the shape of a crouching lion playing with a rat (the rock of the lion ...)

The Resistants’ cave (or Maquisards’ cave) is a natural cavity located on the edge of the plateau. Also called “La Baoumasse” or “Jas méjié” in the 17th century, it was used as summer sheepfold for the herds of La Bastide…Here, there is a story that is passed on from generation to generation :“Once upon a time, a mouse asked a swallow for hospitality. The swallow had built its nest in the cave of La Bastide and was sitting on its eggs.The swallow agreed on condition that the mouse hatched in its place for 3 days. The mouse did the job, and then it left.These were the little hatches, but they were covered with hairs instead of feathers and they had the head and the body of a mouse, with ears and crooked wings like the devil.The swallow died of grief. After her funeral, the queen of the swallows had the orphans locked in the cavity and forbade them to go out in the sunlight on pain of death.That's why bats should not be disturbed during the day."

The asphodel is a large perennial that often exceeds 1 meter and grows in rocky lawns, dry hillsides and rocks... In springtime, we can see it on the plateau towards the rock of the lion.

Dry Grasslands which are iconic features of the caussenard landscape originate from pristine forests that have been transformed by human actions (land clearing, stubble-burning, farming and pasture). This ecosystem is a semi-natural environment with outstanding biological particularities: it provides a critical habitat for rare animal and plant species and is a perfect hunting ground for birds nesting in surrounding cliffs and gorges. Moreover, these traditional pastoral lands have been used for centuries. At the end of the spring season, the causses scenery is decked out with tall grass (feather grass) that forms the shape of a thick silver hair. (source PNR Grands Causses).

Ever since the Neolithic period, humans have kept on improving the numerous natural ponds that they came across all around the Causse. They took advantage of these small land depressions called sotch or doline that provided essential water supplies to ensure the sheep watering, but were also used as laundry places or fish ponds, although their clayey bottom have always posed problems with leakage.In the Occitan language, the word lavanha refers to all kinds of ponds whether natural or hand built, whereas at the PNRGC, we have chosen to keep the word lavogne, or lavagne to designate ponds with paved bottoms, for they have witnessed the development of pastoralism over the 19th century. In the midst of the Larzac limestone foothills, we can see a homogeneous and easily identifiable green-grey mass in the rock with round shapes called Roque-Nègre. This geological formation running through the ochre-coloured limestone body looks as if it were an old chimney, but is actually an old volcanic vent called a « Neck de Basalte.
