From Sauvagnat, a former Carolingian courtyard, we progress on the slopes of the Puy de Neyrand with long rows of lavender blending with orchards and beautiful vegetable gardens in front of wealthy houses dating back to before the phylloxera crisis. Starting point - At the top of the square, take the Trézins path. Go up to the first track on the left. 1 - Follow it towards the grove. At the top of the hill take the small path on the left, access to "Puy Neyrand": AR 20 minutes (view on Chaîne des Puys, Sancy and Cézallier). On the way back, continue the balcony trail (view of St Yvoine, Issoire, Le Livradois), and go down to a T-intersection. 2 - Go to the left. Before the power line, go down the path on the right. At the crow's feet, follow the grassy path down towards the valley until you reach the D 712. 3 - Go down this road for 100 m. Turn right before the bridge. Cross a garden area. When you arrive at rue J. Aujame, immediately turn left onto chemin de la Tarraie until you reach the first path on the left. 4 - Follow it to the top (Racoulat rock), turn off towards the two pylons and turn immediately to the left to go down towards Sauvagnat. Go up rue de la Dray then rue de la Conche. At the fountain, go down rue du Bac. Turn left into the main street. Place de la Fontaine, enter the Fort district. Turn left into a dead end and then turn right. Go up the stairs, take the rue de l'Eglise on the right and then on the left and then turn left again to return to the starting car park.

This hike will introduce you to the former winegrowing villages of Chadeleuf and Neschers and will take you along an old roman road. Starting point - From the starting sign, located on Place de la Résistance, opposite the iron cross and between 2 conifers, go down through the passage of the Canche. Beautiful habitat heritage. Continue opposite by going up rue Borie. At the T-junction, turn right and continue along the grassy path. At the next crossing, turn right into a wide dirt road (viewpoint) to an electric pole facing a calvary. 1 - Go down to the right on the grassy path (old Roman road). View on Neschers. At the road, continue the descent to the right towards Neschers. Cross the road of Coudes and go down on the left the street Robert Oléon. Walk past the town hall. Ignore the Chemin des Vergers on the right and the rue des Licettes on the left. Continue until you reach the tower of the Chemin des Meuniers. 2 - Turn left on rue Pierre Fourvel, until you reach the lava fountain (1859). Turn left into rue des Vignerons. Go around the church. After the calvary, take to the right the rue des Murettes extended by the rue des Croix Basses. Facing the n°11, go down to the right to reach the banks of the Couze Chambon. Do not take the Pont des Croix Basses but follow the Couze to the right (picnic area). At the rue du Theil, turn left. Go under the bridge. Continue along the Couze Chambon by Chemin des Meuniers on the left, until you reach a dam on the watercourse. 3 - Take the 2nd narrow path on the right between high walls. 4 - At the first crossing of 4 lanes, turn right, then, 50 m further on, turn left. At the next T-junction, turn right to join an asphalt street. Turn left until you reach characteristic point 2. Turn left then, 50 m further on, turn left again into Chemin des Vergers, until you reach the cemetery. Turn right, cross the road of Coudes to go up by the track opposite. At the top of the hill (crossing), turn left (view of Chadeleuf) until you see a steep drainage channel in the coppices on the right. 5 - Go down to the right, in the drainage channel, by a path with laces. Walk past a dovecote. At the bottom of the slope, turn right. Walk past a washhouse, then turn right for 80 m. Then go up on the left by a path. In the village, take the Champ Serre trail. At the foot of the tower, turn left and then right. Reach the starting point after going around the church and passing under a fortified gate.

On the banks of the Allier, this walk takes you through the undergrowth and offers pretty unobstructed views of the Issoire basin, you can see the village of Saint-Yvoine and the plain of Lembron. Starting point - From the starting sign, turn right onto the road until you reach the railway. Go down the road on the right, go under the bridge and continue on the left between Allier and the railway. At the road, go under a bridge and go to a crossroads. 1 - Go up the road on the left, cross Perthus Haut and continue until you reach the first house in La Ribeyre. 2 - Go up on the left, always straight ahead, a wide path leading to a road. Follow it up for 100 m, then leave it to continue the ascent on a small asphalt road in the village of Naves, until you reach a crossroads. 3 - Go up on the left and always ignore the paths on the right. Reach a flat area (view of the Livradois, the small Limagne and Issoire, the Cézallier and the Sancy massif) and continue on a balcony path ignoring the paths on the right until you reach a crossroads of four paths. 4 - Go down to the left by a wide path (view on the Sancy massif and the Puys chain) and join the Domaine de Vort.

One of the most beautiful itineraries in the area, which offers a panoramic view over the entire region. From the village of Yronde-et-Buron and its bright arkose houses (blond stone), we travel south... and to the magnificent and nearby Forest of the Comté. Starting point - Cross the departmental road, take the "Chemin de l'Abbaye". At the bottom of the valley, cross the bridge and turn left. Go past the ruins of the Abbey of Bouschet (commemorative plaque), cross the D760 and go up in front. Take the first path on the left, first in the undergrowth and then in the middle of the vines up to a T-junction. 1 - Take the track which rises to the right. Leave the first path on the left (view on the castle of Buron, the hills of Lembron, the Cézallier, the Sancy massif, the Puys chain). At the crossroads of five paths, continue on the main path to the top of the hill. 2 - Turn right. Take the first road on the left at the level of a large scree, then the first road on the right which joins a road on the left to Yronde-et-Buron. After the first houses, turn right and take the street "Sous les Treilles" until you reach a crossroad (crossroads with other PRs). 3 - Take the small road on the right which goes down between gardens, go up leaving a path on the right up to a road. Turn right for about 400 m to reach another road. Take it to the right. 150 m further on, take the path on the left in the undergrowth, until the next crossing. 4 - Turn left up into the forest. At the T-junction, turn left. Leave a path successively to the left and then to the right. At the fork, after leaving the wood, turn right. At the next crossing, continue straight ahead (viewpoints: Livradois, Lembron, Cézallier, massif du Sancy and the Puys chain). Go down to the undergrowth, leave the first path on the left and go up to the right. The itinerary describes a wide loop on the right while going down quickly (views on the Val d'Allier, Issoire, Lembron and Cézallier). Continue, leaving a path on the right, until you reach a large T-junction. 5 - Turn to the right and continue on a good path which goes down towards Fontcrépon. Before the first houses, take a path on the left, cross the village and get back to the starting point.

A village of blond stone, perched on a hill, Montpeyroux is easily recognizable. The hiking trail is accessible to families and will allow you to stroll through the pretty alleys and admire the horizon during a short walk. Starting point - From the starting sign on the car park, pass in front of the community centre and turn left at the roundabout (place de l'Hume). Go up the rue des Granges. In front of the medieval porch, after the church, turn left into rue de Tralume. Go down the stairs on the left, cross the street in front of a cross and join the paved road. Take it down to the first crossroads. 1 - Continue straight on this road, and after a large bend, leave a path that goes to the left towards the castle of Chadieu and go down towards the Allier. Leave a path on the right and continue to the climbing site "Les Rochettes". 2 - After about 80 m, take a small track on the right which joins the first houses of Coudes between gardens and cliff. Go up the rue du Nord for about ten metres and to the right the chemin du Cuel. At the fork, take the right track, and go straight up to get back to the crossroads at point 1, turn left to go up on Montpeyroux. After 100 m, turn left to reach the stone cross. Go up the stairs and turn right into rue de Tralume. In front of the medieval porch, turn right to reach the car park.

A tour in a beautiful area between the Allier and the " Nid d'aigle " of Buron through a path that is both village-like and country-like, leading to the summit of the puy Rousset, from where you can overlook the ruins of a 13th century feudal castle. Nice views. Starting point - From the starting sign, go up rue de Chabonat (fire brigade). At the last house, the street becomes a path (view on the Sancy and Montpeyroux massif). Continue on this path, ignoring the right and left paths, until you reach the entrance of the village of Buron (passage near an old washhouse). 1 - Go up the street to the left and ignore the path of the Buron fountain. Go up the main street for 30 m, turn right into rue de Fontbuisson and go up rue de la Forge to the main street. Take it on the right for 150 m, go through the car park and go up on the left towards the church. To the right, go down the path under the wall. Ignore the dead end on the left and turn left. At the Buron exit sign, at the fork, turn left onto the D 760. In Les Verdiers, go down the main street to the right. 30 m before the Calvary, turn right on Chemin de Largeleix. At the cemetery, continue to the left to enter Yronde. At the crossroads take the rue de l'Horloge on the left. Walk along the church and take the path of the Vias. Take the left track (other yellow PR on the right) to go up to the intersection (cross). 2 - Go straight ahead, ignoring the right and left paths, then continue straight ahead until you reach a crossing on the plateau. 3 - Turn left (radio relay / 180° panorama on the Cézallier, Sancy, Chaîne des Puys) and continue until the road. Follow it on the right for 50 m and then take the first road on the left. At the first intersection go down on the left. At the road, go opposite and follow the D 760 for 50 m. At the metal cross, take the right track. At the first intersection, turn left and continue straight ahead until you reach a crossroads of 5 paths. 4 - Go up in front then stay on the left on a grassy path. At a cross, go straight ahead (view of Montpeyroux). At the entrance to the village of Parent, at a fountain, go down to the left. At the next fountain, follow the direction of the VVF, on the left to return to the starting point.

Overlooking the Allier and the couze Chambon near Coudes, this hike on the plateau allows us to visit the very beautiful village of Montpeyroux and to cross landscapes of pailhats reminiscent of the old winegrowing economy. Starting point - From the starting panel, walk along the car park. At the educational farm, turn left and progress on the arkose outcrops (view of the Sancy massif and the Puys chain) until the beginning of the descent. Continue on this road until you reach an intersection at mid-slope. 1 - Turn right and go down immediately to the left until you reach a T-junction. Turn right and continue until you reach a wide flat path at the bottom of the descent. Take it to the left. At the next intersection go down to a road, cross it (access to Chadieu Castle, private site) and continue opposite until the first road on the right. 2 - Take it, barrier. Advance in the undergrowth along the banks of the Allier and leaving paths on either side. At the road, go down on the left and continue straight ahead until you reach the first houses of Coudes. Walk up to the level of a path going up to the right. 3 - Engage between hedges and fences, continue along gardens and then in the middle of houses until you reach the road. 4 - Go up to the right by the Chemin du Cuel. Further to the right, take the Pailhas path (terraces). On the plateau, continue to the left, until you reach the road. Turn left for 100 m, then go up on a road opposite. At the cross, go up the steps and turn right to the Place de l'Église. Go down through the streets of la Quye and des Granges (panorama on the Sancy massif) to reach the entrance of the village (former arkose quarry) and the starting car park.

A walk on a remarkable geological site where erosion has left us spectacular shapes including fairy chimneys and offered cave dwellings to the first occupants of the site (prehistoric). One of the most spectacular sites in Auvergne. Starting point - From the starting sign, head towards the bridge, cross the Couze Pavin, turn right at the iron cross and then turn right again to the Couze. Take the footbridge, go opposite, cross the main street and go up rue du Coudert. Cross the square (PP1: ferryboat and cross), continue along rue du Coudert and turn left onto chemin des Triavaux. At the intersection, turn right, (colored sediment outcrops and eroding shapes in a fairy chimney). Continue until the second track on the left. 1 - Take it (PV1: view on the villages of the Couze Pavin valley). Go straight ahead until you reach the village of Pardines. Cross it by the rue de la Loubeyre, then the place du Maréchal Ferrand and the rue des Lavandières to the church (PP2: Romanesque church). 2 - Go up to the right rue de la Chaux and pass to the right of the quarry. Continue until the crossroads and turn left towards Boissac. Cross a crossing and go down to the castle (PP3: castle). 3 - Go up a tarred road on the right, go straight ahead until the road, cross it and continue until the T-junction. Turn right and then, 500 m further on, turn left. Leave a path on the left and continue until you reach an intersection. 4 - Turn left to follow the edge of the plateau (PV2: wide panorama). Ignore the path on the left at the cross, and continue until the crossing. 5 - Go down the path to the right. After a few bends in curves, follow the site of Les Grottes (PP4: village of Les Roches). In the chemin des Grottes, turn left (PP5: common oven and railway loom) then right, rue des Grottes, cross the main street and join the car park under the church.

The path rises between vineyards and rocky outcrops to Aubary lime and the menhir of Pierre-Fichade, proof of a human presence of more than 4,000 years. We go down to the red tiles of Champeix and the couze Chambon. Starting point - From the starting sign on the right of the town hall, go towards the schools. Leave the D978 on the right, cross the D28 (route de Ludesse), then the school car park. Turn right just after the post office. Take a stone path on the left. At the crossing, turn right on the road (view of Champeix and Le Marchidial). Pass the houses and continue until you reach a T-junction. Turn left, go up between the vines (view of the Pardines plateau, the 12th century Anciat chapel and the Couze Chambon valley), then turn right at the next intersection. At the fork, turn left. At the crossroads, turn left (circular view of the County, the Allier valley, the Ysson peak and the Sancy massif) until you reach the fork. 1 - Keep on your left until the next crossing in T. Go down and, at the T-intersection, turn left onto the wide road until you reach the D28. 2 - Cross the road and take the first road on the left. Walk past the menhir of the Stone Fichade and continue straight ahead. At Beauregard, leave the right path and go down into Champeix. Turn left into "Petite rue de Beauregard". At the D996, turn left and reach the car park.

The bridge in Coudes above the Allier was constructed in 1846. It has then a unique span suspended by a wire, of 100m long and 4.4m wide. The bridge was destructed by the Germans in 1944 and rebuilt after the War. Superseded by a modern building constructed in 1976, it has lost an important part of its utility. It is no more accessible by car.

At the confluence between the Couze Chambon and the Allier River, le village has developed itself along old boarding ramps. The Couze River is 40 km long, and has its origns in Chambon-sur-Lac. Coudes counts with 2 mineral springs, one located at the confluence between the Couze Chambon and the Allier River, with a weak and variable flow. The other one is more important. It’s known under the name of “the Saulée spring”, ‘Saur spring”, or also “Champ-Robert spring”. Its flow is weaker than in the early 20th century, and its water is really mineralized and gaseous. It was famous for its properties, curing arthritis, diabetes, obesity, nervous troubles, and stomach and skin diseases. The company of mineral waters of Coudes wanted to fit out a spa resort, but the project was rejected. The utilization of the spring stopped officially in 1940 because of the WWII and because of the lack of interest of the population.

Located in the heart of Montpeyroux, one of the Most Beautiful Villages in France, the medieval keep was built following the conquest of Auvergne under Philippe-Auguste. Its geographical position made it possible to protect the small villages around it. From the top of its 33m, the keep of Montpeyroux was the central point of the fortress. Today, its access offers a 360° panoramic view from the top of the platform.

This former winemaking village perched on a hillock has houses built using arkose winding around the keep. The building, which has recently been restored, has amazing views over the Allier Valley. The quality of its frame, the exceptionnal character of its mound overhanging the Allier's valley, naturally made it gain in the association "the most beautiful villages of France". The recently restored building offers a splendid view of the Allier valley. The village takes its name from "mons petrosus", a stony mountain because it has long been famous for its arkose quarries.

We count more than 1 000 years of History for this village perched on its mount, which shines with its blond arkoses rock, material that have done its richness. Montpeyroux’s name (Rocky Mount) dates back to the end of the 11th century. At the entrance of the old fortified village, you could discover a beautiful porch from the 14th century. A donjon, old from the 13th century, overlooks houses and offers since its crenelated platform an exceptional panorama on the chain of Puy, the Sancy Mountain and also the Cantal mounts. Let yourself be seduced by the labyrinth of streets and arched passages, whose oldest constructions date back to 1122. Let yourself be charmed by the wine-growing accommodations and by the old middle-class houses, which testify of the wine-making sector prosperity in the 19th century.

Located at the foot of a cliff bordering a basaltic plateau which dominates the Couze Pavin, Pardines suffer a true cataclysm. In 1733, after torrential rains, masses of rock crumbled during 24 hours and around 60 buildings were crushed. This natural disaster was related to a divine punishment. The population of this village dates back to the 3rd and 4th centuries, with the presence of a necropolis in the place called “la Maison Blanche”. The owner of this domain discovered in 1928 skeletons and terracotta vase. Until 1935, he discovered 210 graves, vases from the 3rd century, bronze objects and change from the 2nd and 4th centuries. This village was fortified in the 15th century, by Austremoine Bohier. You will discover old curtain walls and circular towers integrated in houses.

4 million years ago, the huge volcanic eruption of Mounts Dores caused a vast mudslide that buried the whole area. Today, the erosion cleared this mudslide, which, by inversion of the relief, overlooks the riverbed. In 1824, numerous animals’ fossils were discovered and the city of Perrier has been subjected, for several years, to geological and paleontological studies. On the slope of the plateau, floored-caves have been hollow by human beings. They’ve been used for several years as housing, and more recently, as wine cellar. A fitted out walk allows visitors to discover these caves.

This site is considered as one of the most beautiful pile of lahars in the world. It has a surprising fauna and flora with its exothermic hills with their “ruiniform” relief and with its dry lawns, populated in the summer by a myriad of butterflies. The troglodytic village of Les Roches, released of its brambles and shrubs by volunteers, awaits your visit. Walking on the discovery path, you’ll be surprised by the work furnished by our ancestors to dig and build their houses.

The construction of this hall, in the neoclassic style, dates from the strart of the 19th century. It was a warehouse for the wheat which was harvested around Issoire. In 1942, the town council became concerned by lack of use of the builidng, and so in the 1950s the building became a community hall. So this traditional symbol changed to a modern gathering place for associations and the festive life of the town, giving great pleasure to all the inhabitants of Issoire.

This house has a beautiful classic facade made out of local white and pink arkose. If you look closely you can see evidence of a more ancient past in the form of two reused carved stone heads above the doorway.
