Beautiful panoramas on the village of La Bastide-Pradines, built on its rocky spur, mark this circuit of the Larzac by the Lion's Rock, an easily recognizable ruiniform.From the car park (400 meters after the tunnel, coming from La Bastide-Pradines), return to it on 300 meters, then turn right on 150 meters until the old railway station.Turn right the disused railway on 600 meters (on each side, look at the arches of retaining walls).Be careful at the traffic of the tourist train “Sur les Rails du Larzac” from Easter to All Saints’ Day. Take the trail on the right which rises gently through the woods along the valley before crossing to stay on the right bank.Cross the gate and ascend the valley by a pretty path lined with boxwood, called “bouissière”. The path turns left, crosses a first ravine, then rises steeply along a second ravine. Take the track on the right to the cave of the Resistance (rock shelter).Continue climbing in the same direction. The track becomes a steep gravel path climbing towards the plateau (follow the signs).Walk along the edge of the plateau to the right to the rocks (panorama on the Cernon Valley and the ruiniform rocks of the Larzac Causse; pulsatile anemones, asphodels, orchids depending on the season) and arrive on a track (roman road) climbing from the valley.Possibility to reach the “Le Rocher du Lion“(The rock of the Lion) in 20 minutes go-and-back.Go down the right track.At the junction, veer left taking the path lined with boxwoods on the hillside, cross the short-grass prairies and continue on a path in the pinewood. Turn right to find the car park.

The trail rises progressively before turning into a track that reaches the top of the Tournemire amphitheatre. Walk close to the edge, around the amphitheatre to get to the Grépounac Cross and enjoy the beautiful view over the frontal Causses and the Combalou rock of Roquefort.From the cross, head towards the south-east to reach the D23, take this road for 700 m, and then follow the trail on the right that leads to the Viala du Pas de Jaux tower (notice the superb lavogne).From the Viala tower, the hiking trail takes the road leading to the Mas Baldy for 200 m. At the cross, turn off the road and take left a wide logging road. Before the first major trail intersection, take right a path, leave a lavogne to the right and carry on the grassy path towards the Mas Baldy. Keep going on the small road of la Fage for 800 m.In a curve, take right a path which runs throughout a pastureland and joins a sunken path lined up with box trees. The path leads to the edges of the beautiful amphitheatre of St Paul des Fonts.Walk downhill along a stony path zigzagging on the slopes, cross a brook and carry on towards the village centre.In the village of St Paul des Fonts, turn off the GR71C that ascends the plateau to the left and follow the alternative route towards St Jean d’Alcas. Walk along the Annou brook and soon after the village exit, leave the departmental road and take a small road to the right. Cross the railway line (Béziers to Millau) and, just after take right a trail. Keep going on this main trail up to the D 93.When reaching the D 93, do not cross the road, but take the path to the left. Cross the road a bit further on and follow a sunken path to reach St Jean d’Alcas.

From the Cernon Valley to the Larzac plateau, between boxwood and forests, a family hike that begins with the "precious stones path”, fossil deposit and gem of geology.From the parking of La Jasse, go across the footbridge over the Cernon River, cross the road and go towards the wooden signs indicating the circuits.Take the path called “le chemin des pierres précieuses” (the gems path), then a wide stoned path, cross the road and continue straight. Pass under the railway bridge and turn right on the path of La Devèze.At the first turn, take left and follow N°2 Puech Espinous, pass by the spring gate, cross a woody area following a ditch on the left. At the end, take on the left a shaded path then pass a gate.At the end of the path, go straight. Pass next to a Canadian way by a gate, and continue on a path above the old train station. Turn right, the 50 m further turn left and enter in the Jacky’s wood (sign bois de Jacky) that you cross. Pass under the viaduct of the railway in a slope.At the bottom, at the crossroads, turn right, follow this path until you cross an uphill track, then take the path on left and pass in front of a wooden hut. You cross black bushes.Take the downhill trail on the right until you reach the next junction, then turn left at the sign “ARRIVEE” (arrival) going down a path in a meadow. Then follow to the right the path lined with boxwood from which you can see the houses of the village.

Follow the marked trail, turn to the left after the Waste water treatment plant then to the right before the small house.50 m further on, leave the ascending path and carry on to the right towards Roquefort along the Bousquet farm. Walk through the woodland, then take a track on your left.Reach the D93 road, turn left and follow the road uphill for approximately 300 m.From this point, turn to your left towards Tournemire (from here the Ladder path can be joined by heading to the right towards Roquefort). Walk through a buissière (a path lined with box trees) and head your way down to the village of Tournemire. Once you reach the bottom take a right turn and retrace your way back to the railway station.

This amazing landscape was shaped by the sea at a time when it covered the causses 200 million of years ago. The Tournemire amphitheatre provides a wonderful natural habitat for fauna and flora varied species.Starting from the car park at the Tournemire town hall, walk along the D23 towards Roquefort. 20 m before the passageway that goes under the railway, take the tarmac track on your right up to the old railway tunnel entrance. Follow the yellow marks and turn to the right on a footpath. Go through a fence, then after 100 m cross a path and keep following the ascending track opposite “the engineer trail”. Once you’ve reached the top of a steep slope, turn into a small dry canyon and after 150 m enjoy a magnificent view on your left. Keep going until you reach the Causse du Larzac where the Fournials fortified farm can be seen (private property, visits not allowed).Leaving the Fournials farm on your left, take the track to the right towards the Viala du Pas de Jaux. From here, a possible option is to walk onwards for 300 m and just before a small stone building leave the track and take right a footpath that goes directly down to Tournemire.Keep following the caussenard footpath and walk past a lavogne (natural pond with a paved bottom on your left) then carry on along the amphitheatre up to the Grépounac cross. Retrace your steps back to the fork with the Arnals path.Take left the track with a red and white marking (GR71C). Carry on the GR which goes down the Tournemire amphitheatre. Walk your way down to the Pont du Diable where you will see the brook Brias resurgence.Head back to Tournemire on the trail, then onto a road which passes the side of the stadium (on the right hand side) then past a beautiful building which was formerly a convent, come back to the Town Hall car park.

Travel along this hiking path and explore what was once the habitat of a formidable predatorFrom the carpark and the Plesiosaur House which are situated opposite the Town Hall, take the righthand road lined with plane trees for 400 m. At the crossroads, turn to the left onto a small road for 500 m.Leave the road to your left and follow the path sloping gently towards the gite “la maison de la vigne”.Once you have reached the gite, take the descending path and ford the Brias brook (in case of heavy rainfall be careful and turn back).Keep walking on the path and reach the hunting lodge which is situated at the corner of the former stadium.Take the road for 300 m to walk back down to point 2 and return to the carpark by the route taken when you started the circuit.

Take it for 800m.Turn right in operating path towards the cross of “Plo de la Lavogne”. After the cobbled-watering place, turn off left.Before D23, turn right and follow a dirt track that gets to a small road. Take it on the left in direction of the village of Viala to reach the starting point.

It leads to the heights of the cirque of Saint-Paul-des-Fonts (view on the whole cirque and village). Go down the gravel path that zigzags on the wooded slope. Cross over the stream and continue towards the center of the village of Saint-Paul des Fonts (return).100 meters before the church, climb left to the tank, then continue along the path that rises in laces towards the plateau (panorama of St. Paul and the Annoux Valley).On the causse (view on the Vialette farm, vestige of the old domain dependent of the Commandery of Sainte-Eulalie-de-Cernon), turn left on the road for 500 meters, then go on the right track.1 kilometer before the D23 road, turn left and head towards the pine woods (follow the signs). Walk around the pine wood to the right.At the picnic area, take the path to go out of the wood and meet on west the D23 road, at the cobbled watering place.  Take the D23 road to the left to return to Viala du Pas de Jaux.

This old railway line connected Le Vigan to Tournemire climbing the foothills of the Larzac. It was granted to the Compagnie du Midi in 1883, works began in 1881 and lasted 11 years. Over 60 kilometers, this line has 32 tunnels, 12 viaducts and several kilometers of retaining walls.In 1896, the traffic of the travelers is put in place: 3 trains a day circulate in 2 directions. It takes 2:15 to make Le Vigan - Tournemire and only 2:00 in the opposite direction.The First World War caused the first threats on this line. Since 1917, there was talk of dismantling the rails between Le Vigan and Nant-Comberedonde. Traffic resumed gradually to reach its highest point in 1922, with 372 travelers per day and 33,000 tons for the year.Freight traffic remained alone on the entire line until June 1951.Closed to all traffic in 1952, the railway between Avèze and L'Hospitalet was removed in 1955. In 1960, the rails were removed between L'Hospitalet and Tournemire, then it was decided to hand them over in 1977 as part of the extension project of the military camp of La Cavalerie. The project was abandoned in 1981, no convoy took this section. It is used today by the Vélorail du Larzac in Ste-Eulalie de Cernon.

The Hospitallers traced a mule track linking La Bastide-Prandines to the commandery of Saint-Félix de Sorgues and passed through Viala-du-Pas de Jaux. This medieval way, whose real name is “carrière cave” (path cashed) accesses the plateau near a large roc having the shape of a crouching lion playing with a rat (the rock of the lion ...)

The asphodel is a large perennial that often exceeds 1 meter and grows in rocky lawns, dry hillsides and rocks... In springtime, we can see it on the plateau towards the rock of the lion.

The Resistants’ cave (or Maquisards’ cave) is a natural cavity located on the edge of the plateau. Also called “La Baoumasse” or “Jas méjié” in the 17th century, it was used as summer sheepfold for the herds of La Bastide…Here, there is a story that is passed on from generation to generation :“Once upon a time, a mouse asked a swallow for hospitality. The swallow had built its nest in the cave of La Bastide and was sitting on its eggs.The swallow agreed on condition that the mouse hatched in its place for 3 days. The mouse did the job, and then it left.These were the little hatches, but they were covered with hairs instead of feathers and they had the head and the body of a mouse, with ears and crooked wings like the devil.The swallow died of grief. After her funeral, the queen of the swallows had the orphans locked in the cavity and forbade them to go out in the sunlight on pain of death.That's why bats should not be disturbed during the day."

Ever since the Neolithic period, humans have kept on improving the numerous natural ponds that they came across all around the Causse. They took advantage of these small land depressions called sotch or doline that provided essential water supplies to ensure the sheep watering, but were also used as laundry places or fish ponds, although their clayey bottom have always posed problems with leakage.In the Occitan language, the word lavanha refers to all kinds of ponds whether natural or hand built, whereas at the PNRGC, we have chosen to keep the word lavogne, or lavagne to designate ponds with paved bottoms, for they have witnessed the development of pastoralism over the 19th century. Dry Grasslands which are iconic features of the caussenard landscape originate from pristine forests that have been transformed by human actions (land clearing, stubble-burning, farming and pasture). This ecosystem is a semi-natural environment with outstanding biological particularities: it provides a critical habitat for rare animal and plant species and is a perfect hunting ground for birds nesting in surrounding cliffs and gorges. Moreover, these traditional pastoral lands have been used for centuries. At the end of the spring season, the causses scenery is decked out with tall grass (feather grass) that forms the shape of a thick silver hair. (source PNR Grands Causses).

The great Tournemire amphitheatre is one of the most outstanding escarpments of the western edge of the Larzac and as such is classified "Zone Natura 2000". The lower slopes are the only part where Toarcian marls are visible in the SW erosion gullies, everywhere else these marls are hidden under rocky slopes and big rock slides. At the top of the slopes, the dolomitic limestone ruin-shaped cliffs frame the outline of this amphitheatre.

Situated in the southwest of the Larzac Causse, the Tournemire Cirque is a remarkable geological area marking the bondary beetwen the fore-causses and the great causses. It presents limestone ledges and rocky escarpments with caves and cavities where raptors such as the eagle owl and the golden eagle nest.

This 1885 m long old railway tunnel was excavated towards the end of the 19th century. In 1988, a laboratory designed to undertake, geophysical, geomechanical and hydrochemistry studies was set up inside the tunnel. The aim of this fundamental research, carried out by the Nuclear Safety and Protection Institute, is to gain more knowledge of the way underground water moves and transports dissolved materials.
