From Toulouse to Muret through trails in a surprising wilderness and almost all the way out of road. Beautiful views over Garonne river. In Toulouse, the way is going through some of the most beautiful monuments : Saint-Sernin basilica, Notre Dame du Taur church, Capitole square, the Jacobins, Garonne riverside, Daurade church, the Pont Neuf and Saint-James Hospital.

A trail which follows the Canal du Midi. Possibility to do this on roller-skates or on foot. Discover this majestic canal built by Pierre-Paul Riquet with its centuries-old plane trees. The Canal du Midi, built starting in 1666, a total of 240 km long with its main purpose being to transport merchandise, notably grain grown in the Lauragais area until 1970. The Canal du Midi is classified as part of UNESCO’s World Heritage sites since December 5th 1996. The green trail (3metres wide) was established along the former tow path allows vacationers to peacefully discover the area's rich heritage at their own pace. The trail may be followed from Toulouse to Port Lauragais or the other way around with access possible at various points all along the way (for example at the canal-locks).

Following the extension of the Canal du Midi, this itinerary allows both cyclists and hikers to discover some of the picturesque aspects of the Canal de Garonne, frequently used by canal-barges and rich in its historical heritage. This is an ideal cycling trail for biking with your children or among friends, having no particular difficulties involved. The Canal du Garonne locks are characterized by their perfectly parallel lateral sides (called “bajoyers” which are the masonry containment walls of the lock) that are unlike the locks of the Canal du Midi which are oval shaped. They were all built in 1840 at the time when the canal was dug and these locks were changed to the Fraycinet standards in 1973 in order to allow 38 metres barges to pass through. It is possible to begin anywhere on the cycle path along the canal which has signs indicating its direction from Toulouse. Along the way you can discover the town of Grenade, a former bastide with its magnificent covered marketplace.

A walk along the PR Route de la terre is an opportunity to step back in time and appreciate the heritage of earth culture, both architectural and artistic, which is still alive and well in the Toulousain region and, here, in the Coteaux du Girou. Here, more than anywhere else, the land undulates as if lifted by a swell triggered by the Autan wind. On this walk, just outside Toulouse, enjoy panoramic views of the Hers valley and the Montagne Noire from the hills of the Lauragais region of Toulouse. Along the way you'll discover : In Montgiscard: the 20th-century postcard-style Grand'Rue, Saint-André church (1541) In Donneville: Saint-Pierre church (1484) with its bell tower and wall, the 19th-century Chapillonie fountain In Deyme: the church of Sainte-Marie Madeleine (12th and 16th centuries), the shaded Alex Ouillac square with its plane trees, arbour and picnic tables. In Montbrun-Lauragais: the 1680 mill, the 19th-century church of Saint-Michel and several viewpoints. Beware of several road crossings, including the D24 (twice) and slippery terrain in wet weather.

This hike between ridges and valleys offers fine views over the Toulouse plain and the Lauragais farmlands, which change colour with the seasons. Discover the village of Baziège and its fertile hills shaped by the Autan wind. A stopover on the Roman road from Narbonne to Toulouse, Baziège was an important commercial centre in the Middle Ages. Its salt and wheat markets (in the 11th and 18th centuries) and then its pastel markets in the Renaissance contributed to its fortunes.

This trail offers various landscapes including the banks of the river Save and the Carayon woods.

A veritable green lung, the Eaunes Wood ZNIEFF provides a link via the soft paths of the via Garona and the Muretains hillsides to the Clarté Dieu d'Eaunes abbey. A "nature walk" offering views of the Pyrenees and a chance to meet Sylviane Perret, a ceramist and sculptor inspired by the world of minerals. A stone's throw from the route, come and meet Attel'toi and its carriage horses for a ride in a horse-drawn carriage. Opposite the town hall, turn right into rue des Jardins. Go straight ahead and take the Chemin de Coste Brulade. Turn left and join the D17, a safe path runs alongside the main road. Cross the bridge over the Garonne and after the roundabout at the entrance to Ondes, take the 1st left. At the end, turn left and then 1st right. Follow the path around the houses and then back to the track alongside the main road. This will take you to the Lycée Agricole.

The largest Romanesque church in France, this monumental gem listed as World Heritage by UNESCO has welcomed pilgrims for centuries along the Way of St James. The Basilica of Saint-Sernin has been restored to its former splendour in recent days, with a contemporary rose window that lets the light in and floods the nave with a multitude of colours. Come and admire this monumental work designed by the artist Jean-Michel Orthoniel. One of the symbols of Toulouse, this basilica of brick and stone is certainly imposing. Majestic and luminous, it was built between the XI and XIV Centuries in honour of St Saturnin (or Sernin), the first bishop of the city. An important stop along the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela, it inspires reverence and its vast proportions are ideal for strolling past the numerous reliquaries. A 21 metre high nave whose barrel vault rests upon richly sculpted capitals leads you to the choir and its gold-plated wooden and marble canopy. In the richly decorated transepts you can discover some moving medieval frescoes. You can also access the crypts in which it is possible to admire, most notably, the enamel reliquary of the True Cross in the form of a sarcophagus.

Consecrated in 1096, the basilica is a masterpiece of Romanesque art. The tympanum of the Miegeville door, sculpted capitals, the altar table or bas reliefs (above the crypt) marked and influenced art in Europe. The church is the largest monument of Romanesque origin remaining in the world. World Heritage of UNESCO as monument on the way to Compostela, the church with the relics of St. Sernin and many other relics (it was written that there was no holier place in the world after St. Peter Rome) attracted many pilgrims.

This is the most photographed building in Toulouse! Its dome acts as a beacon for the city’s inhabitants, drawing the gaze by day and when it is dressed in lights at night. The marker of the Saint-Cyprien quarter, La Grave chapel was built around the XVIII Century on a gravel bank left by the River Garonne, which gives it its name. It was part of the La Grave Hospital, built in 1197 in order to accommodate plague victims. Its consecration to St Joseph, patron saint of carpenters, places the accent on the role it played during the XVII Century at the time of the Great Imprisonment of the poor. It then included numerous workshops designed to train the needy in the skills required to earn a placement with local artisans.

The ferry that replaces a bridge connects the city center to the Parc du Confluent. This ferry allows you, in a few minutes, to cross the Garonne from one bank to the other. It is on a flat-bottomed boat, guided by a ferryman, that you will reach the Parc du Confluent, an island of greenery ideal for family walks. Close to the city and at the confluence of Ariege and Garonne, the banks of the river remain wild. The Confluence park can be reached with pontoon. At the XIV century, there was a bridge. At the XIX century, a new bridge (the remains can be seen near the pontoon) was built but immediatly destroyed by flood.

Saint Germaine is a young martyred shepherdess whose body, found intact in the 17th century, was the object of popular cult. Basilica with dome in Romano-Byzantine style, built by the architect Pierre Esquié in 1901, finished in composite style for the centenary of the canonization of Saint Germaine in 1967. A pilgrimage takes place every year on 15 June.
