Following the extension of the Canal du Midi, this itinerary allows both cyclists and hikers to discover some of the picturesque aspects of the Canal de Garonne, frequently used by canal-barges and rich in its historical heritage.
This is an ideal cycling trail for biking with your children or among friends, having no particular difficulties involved. The Canal du Garonne locks are characterized by their perfectly parallel lateral sides (called “bajoyers” which are the masonry containment walls of the lock) that are unlike the locks of the Canal du Midi which are oval shaped. They were all built in 1840 at the time when the canal was dug and these locks were changed to the Fraycinet standards in 1973 in order to allow 38 metres barges to pass through.
It is possible to begin anywhere on the cycle path along the canal which has signs indicating its direction from Toulouse.
Along the way you can discover the town of Grenade, a former bastide with its magnificent covered marketplace.
