Ensuite vous passerez à proximité de la grotte de Dargilan, une des merveilles locales, avant un joli dépaysement avec la traversée d'une partie du Causse noir, sur des routes étroites mais agréables et avec une bonne visibilité. Lanuéjols sera le village idéal pour une pause (départ possible également), poterie ou boisson avant de repartir vers Meyrueis par une route discrète passant par le hameau de Servillières. This trail takes you from the arid Causses plateau to the foothills at Le Puech Pounchut, and lets you discover the upper Jonte valley with all its contrasts. From the carpark, take the D 996 on the right until you reach a small park with a stone cross. Take the path on the left running alongside a high wall. Go uphill to join up with the D 986, then take the path opposite. This is steep for 150 m and joins up with a former road. Turn left onto this and walk to the road leading to Pauparelle. Turn right onto this road and walk to Pauparelle. Do not enter the hamlet (on your left), but go uphill on the path and, after about 100 m, fork right to start a very steep ascent. After 200 m, a track runs alongside the cliffs: take this and walk alongside the small road without crossing it. Turn right towards Salvinsac, go downhill into the gully and end up on the D 996 at Salvinsac. Cross the road to go down into the hamlet and cross the river Jonte. After the bridge, go uphill into a forest of conifers after a forestry track. After two hairpin bends, go right and slightly downhill at the pass. At the first crossroads, continue straight on the track until you reach a large crossroads. Here, go towards Meyrueis to reach the village vacances (holiday village). Cross the bridge over the river Brèze and walk alongside the public swimming-pool to get to Meyrueis. Turn right and cross the bridge to return to the carpark.

This family walk lets you explore the Roquedols Estate with its château, dovecote and forest. The site's charm will work on both young and old! The walk starts with a very gentle slope in the forest, to the pigeon-loft. It then follows a former béal (irrigation channel) to reach the château and gardens.

On this trail, discover a very agricultural village, a restored dovecote, the flora of the causses, Neolithic man and the anecdote of the 3 bishops. An easy hike for the whole family. The atmosphere of the Causse is spectacular, with its vast stretches of desert and its silence. A few burning bushes and boxwoods add to the rugged authenticity of the land. The hamlet of Les Mazes is on the Causse Noir. Here, the land is arid, and sheep are king. And the 3 bishops? When the départements were created, around 1790, the 3 bishops of Gard, Lozère and Aveyron got together and deposited this cross at the boundaries. Sentier de découverte Le col de Montjardin et celui qui lie le Causse Noir au Mont Aigoual. Ce sentier vous fera cheminer de part et d'autre, ce sera l'occasion de voir des paysages très contrastés : Steppes des Causses et les petits bataillons de buis épars, forêts profondes des versants de l’Aigoual, gorges abruptes et vertes de pins sylvestres, corniches fendues, sculptées par les éléments, ravins pleins de recoins où quelques arbres, miracle, ont trouvé une poche de terre. Belle descente sur Randavel par un ancien chemin, puis remontée vers Montjardin par le fond d'un vallon. Belles vues du plateau vers le Mont Aigoual. Berceau du reboisement de l'Aigoual, ce hameau semble aujourd'hui abandonné dans son dense écrin forestier. Saint Sauveur révèle pourtant une histoire riche et intense. Parmi la centaine d'espèces d'arbres présentes dans l'arboretum, partez à la découverte du Pin pleureur de l'Himalaya, de l'Araucaria, du Cyprès de Lawson, de nombreux feuillus et profitez de la vue sur le hameau à travers l'alignement de Calocèdres. Sentier sans difficulté particulière, accessible aux familles. Sentier d'interprétation Un grand programme de reboisement a été mené sur le massif de l’Aigoual à la fin du XIXe siècle, sous la houlette du forestier Georges Fabre et du botaniste Charles Flahault. Celui-ci a été parmi les premiers à pressentir l’importance des essences exotiques en matière de reboisement. C’est dans ce contexte et pour étudier le comportement des espèces dans différentes conditions écologiques (altitude, régime des pluies, nature des sols, etc.) qu’un réseau de dix arboretums fut créé entre 1885 et 1903.Saint Sauveur des Pourcils fut l’un des grands domaines agricoles de l’Aigoual, achetés par l’administration forestière à la fin du XIXe siècle. Le hameau ne comporte qu’une église et quelques bâtiments, dont un imposant corps de ferme aux allures de château. This ruiniform block field (felsenmeer) on the Causse Méjean has resulted from the capricious dissolution of the dolomite limestone. It emerges suddenly, like a final panoramic viewpoint before the abyss of the gorges that delimit the Causse. From the car park, walk about 150 m through the hamlet, then turn left after the agricultural buildings.

Bramabiau is one of those grandiose and bizarre works of nature. A veritable cradle of French speleology, the tour is 1 km long and very accessible. Guided tour of around 1 hour along the Bonheur underground river. This is the place where cave enthusiasts are least likely to experience déjà vu. Temperature 10°C. Immerse yourself in art and nature at Aigoual! This circuit reveals regularly renewed installations inspired by nature and the landscapes of Mont-Aigoual. Located in the Borgne Valley, in the commune of Les Plantiers, our Fontfouillouse gîte welcomes you to an unspoilt valley at the foot of a 12th-century Romanesque church. In the midst of the Cévennes chestnut grove, we have created our group gîte. Our accommodation comprises a large living room/kitchen with direct access to the outside, and sleeping areas for up to 15 people. Discover an eco-museum in an old mill, with a fun exhibition for everyone. Children and adults alike can take an indoor and outdoor tour to learn more about this important part of our daily lives! In the heart of the Vallée Borgne, in the village's old mill, the Maison de l'Eau has naturally found its place. Around this witness to the past, a modern and entertaining exhibition presents water in the Cévennes. Mister Beaver, the mascot, invites young and old to a more unusual visit, combining questions, games and experiments... An interpretive trail completes the visit with a presentation of some of the tree species native to the Cévennes. This is a fun walk for the whole family, during which you'll come face-to-face with the birds that pass between forest and river. Equipped with a pair of binoculars, you can follow the signposted path to learn how to observe and recognize birds (also downloadable from our website). In addition to visits, the Maison de l'Eau also offers environmental education sessions for schoolchildren, leisure centers and the general public, as well as nature outings (on the trail of the beaver, the otter, the little people of the water...), walks, visits to the village... Come and stroll along the béal, let yourself be lulled by the sound of water on the mill wheels! There are 3 interpretation trails in the Vallée Borgne area, including one on the route of the Maison de l'Eau des Plantiers.

Throughout the climb, you will see abandoned former crop terraces. A few grapevines have persisted since local wine-growing came to an end. They bear witness to the fact that the slopes around these hamlets and villages were once cultivated and planted with fruit trees and vines. Terraces like these were the only way for the valley's inhabitants to have flat areas with deep soil suitable for growing.

From Pauparelle, there is a nice view of the village of Ayres. This hamlet came into being in the 11th century around a Benedictine priory, founded by the Abbey Saint-Victor-de-Marseille on the current site of the castle. The latter, laid out in the 16th century on the ruins of the monastery, was pillaged and burned to the ground by the Camisards in 1703. Rebuilt in 1710, it is now a renowned hotel. Pauparelle is a private property that is not open to visits. Its name means “estate of the poor”. The farm buildings and living quarters date from the 17th and 19th centuries. Until 1850, the property belonged to the Charity Office of the town of Meyrueis, which, at that time, had about 5,000 inhabitants. (Jérôme Reversat)

Marker 1In Roquedols forest, firs and beeches grow side by side magnificently. Softwood and hardwood, together? Yes, but the combination is not entirely due to chance. This forest is not a wilderness, but a space cultivated to maintain the diversity of species. At Roquedols, you can see conifers such as fir, larch and spruce as well as deciduous trees: beech, maple and ash. Gaps are made in the forest canopy to give the trees all the light that they need to develop.

Marker 7Life was good at Roquedols in the late 19th century! Madame Dol transformed the Estate, embellishing the promenade with a chestnut avenue and formal garden. They might almost make you forget the Estate’s history of agriculture and forestry, except that its buildings – the former farm outbuildings later turned into a sawmill – are such visible reminders of it.

Marker 2“It is not a palace. It is a simple castel, a Cévenol castel: the château of a harsh and austere country. Backing onto wooded slopes, it stands in a hollow from where the view extends over the valley downstream.” (Jeannin, 1961). Standing at the top of the dovecote will easily give you a poetical outlook. Roquedols Estate and the forest on Mont Aigoual have inspired many authors. In the 19th century, Fabre d’Olivet invented a troubadour’s chant: in order to recover his castle and marry his betrothed, Ponce de Meyrueis must capture a sword held by terrible brigands. After many incidents, Ponce and Rose are reunited and can live together in love.

Marker 2The interior layout of the dovecote with its nesting-boxes has been lost. The set-back roof made it possible for the birds to sun themselves in the winter whilst remaining sheltered from the north wind. At Roquedols, as elsewhere, only the nobility had the right to breed pigeons, which were sought-after not only for their flesh but also for their droppings, used as a powerful fertiliser.

Marker 6A former agricultural estate building, the traditional 14th century farm evolved into a castle in the 16th century. Looking at its quadrilateral shape, you will see that the tower on the left looks different from the one on the right. The shape of the porch before the entrance seems unlike the other parts of this monument. Up until the 20th century, the Château underwent several transformations, but Roquedols Estate has always retained its agricultural purpose. Its successive owners have taken possession of the space in different ways: the Dupont de Bossuges family hosted clandestine Protestant gatherings (18th c.); Madame Dol turned the Estate into a charming residence (late 19th to early 20th c.). During the Second World War, the castle was a refuge for the forestry services and a storage place for artworks. Today, it brings happiness to walkers looking for fresh air!

Marker 5To contemplate these giants, you need to crane your neck and lift your eyes to the skies! The most remarkable is a giant sequoia originally from California. It was introduced at Roquedols for aesthetic reasons and out of a taste for the exotic. The many silver firs growing around it reveal ambitions of a different kind. In about 1840, the Estate’s owners created a tree nursery so as to be able to grow a large variety of species. The nursery was maintained until the 1980s.

Marker 3Men and women have fashioned the Estate according to their needs and wishes. At Roquedols, crops used to be irrigated with water from the Pauchètes stream. In fact, the path you have just been walking on may have struck you as narrow and stony. It follows a former béal, or small irrigation channel. Much later, ornamental landscaping was laid out, including this beautiful archway – which is built on the vestiges of the wall of the former Protestant cemetery!

Marker 4Felled trees and branches left on the ground in a protected space? That might seem surprising, but at Roquedols Estate, the forest has always been intended to be productive. In the 19th century, Messrs. Breuil, Dayre and Jouve already exploited the woods of Roquedols intensively. Today, tree fellings are planned with the greatest respect for biodiversity. You are in a living forest, whose appearance evolves by human intervention.

Ideally located on the village square in Lanuéjols, the café/restaurant "La Bonne Adresse" welcomes you all year round in a modern, outward-looking setting.
