This educational path and its signs that you are about to discover were pade by Plancoët's Public School, through a Nature Régional Territorial contract "For the valorisation of the biodiversity and of the natural heritage of Plancoët." Nazareth district was attached to Plancoët as late as 1841. Before then, it was an important hamlet of Corseul, the Roman city. The central rue de l'Abbaye, with its preserved architecture, is one of the oldest streets of the town. This bank of the Arguenon River is the theater of the first steps of great Romantic author: François-René de Chateaubriand. François-René de Chateaubriand was born in St Malo on Septembre 4th 1768 and was buried, as he asked, at the Grand Bé, in front of St Malo, July 19th 1848. Feeble newborn, he spent his early childhood "at Plancoët's fresh air' where his grand-mother, Madame de Bedée placed him in a nanny's care. He stayed there for approximately three years, then it was Saint-Malo and Combourg, Dol, Rennes and Dinan's schools from where, adolescent, he comes to visit his family. He's the witness of his kin's happiness... This walk follow the circuit that Chateaubriand's mother and grand-mother took between la Bouëtardaye manor, the rented house of Rue de l'Abbaye and Nazareth church. When arriving in Saint-Méloir-des-Bois, you will be taken by the authentic and preserved aspect of this village from Brittany. The village boasts, since 2000, the certification of “Commune du Patrimoine rural de Bretagne” (Village of the Rural Heritage of Brittany), which shines a light on the existence of an architectural, landscape, ethnological and historical heritage which permits to understand the land and its inhabitants. From its environmental action (Agenda 21) and its preserved countryside, it is also crowned « Village Nature ». Finally, it won prizes for the quality of its flowers and obtained a third flower at the Flowered Towns and Villages contest in 2013. The arm of Bellenraye, at the mouth of the Guébriand, on the Arguenon ria, is still much preserved. With a bit of patience, we can spot in this islet of biodiversity, many birds and butterflies. The old tidal mill is a private property. In the olden days the place was very animated. Go past the mill and take left at the top of the hill into the hamlet.

CAUTION: in case of high tide, the stones can’t be reached These ringing stones are large blocks of amphibole that give an argentine sound (not the tango) when they are hit with some pebble. Some think they are remains of Gargantua’s sick when he was upset by the smell of a dried rays-full lighter passing under his nose.

Saint Pierre chapel dates back to the 14th century, (altered in the 19th century) and is linked to a legend: in 1864, when this hamlet from Pluduno, is attached to St Lormel, the inhabitants of Pluduno decided to take with them the statue of their venerated saint. During its transport, the statue is particularly heavy. When on the new borders between the two villages, the 14 horses refuse to go forward. It is understood as the refusal of the saint to leave his dear chapel. People bowed to God's wish and went back to the chapel with the help of a single horse this time round ! At the chapel, go left twice, then right after the camping site. At the road (shops); follow the road up to the bridge and left the path to admire the old village-centre.

When in the marshes, be warned of the tide, follow the path for 2km (1.2 miles). Go back up after a wooden bridge towards St-Pierre Thistidal marsh is an extremely rich ecosystem. You could meet many levels of vegetations (slikke, shore, reed marsh...) and a singular fauna. But be careful ! In case of a strong tide coefficient, the path can be unreachable or slippery.

This « dangerous ford » on the ancient Roman road will give its name to the Port of le Guildo. This favorable site is also a port turned to the sea and towards Plancoët and the end of the ria.

The Guildo's port is situated on an old Roman road. Its name means "mouth" or "dangerous ford"; a boater was necessary to reach the other side. On both sides of the bridge, a picturesque port lies where you can find restaurants and a hotel to stop for the night. After 2km, yellow and red marker, go down to the left. Follow the D786 on the right and cross the bridge. Go under the bridge (Public lavatories nearby) and take on the left Rue de la Petite Suisse.

From the Pointe du Chevet, or « Chef de l’Isle » (Head of the Island), at the top of the peninsula, border guards enjoyed a remarkable view on la Baie des Ebihens (reachable at low tide, details must be looked up at the Office de tourisme).Today, this remarkable natural site is a great place for contemplation. Go back following the Point’s eastern costal line. Depending on the tide, 20 metres before the gate go down the left path towards the beach and go up after the Plage du Rougert’s (9) cabins. If the tide is too high, follow the signs along the road and the parking space.

Back to the Pépinais Inlet (15), take the GR on the left at the end of the valley and follow it to the Dune. The dune of Vauvert is a natural moving and fragile ensemble; please follow the principal path. Theses incomparable dunes and the rare flora developing there won’t fail to inspire you. The ecosystem of the site is very different from the mudflat, and the rocky coastal lines. A true wild garden can be found there: orchids, yellow horned poppy, purslane, sand bedstraw, thisthles, many colours and occasions to be amazed. CAUTION! For a few years now, the use of the path threatens this very fragile natural environment. Winter tempests weaken the dune. A detour might be put into place if so. Please follow said detour and stay on the path.

This old castle is built on a rocky peak at the mouth of the ria. A strategic position since the Arguenon River was a border as well as a way inland. A first fortified house from the 11th and 12th centuries, mostly made out of wood and earth, is replaced in the 13th century by a stone castle, built according to a quadrangular plan with angle towers. The castle’s great architectural quality shows the will of the new ducal dynasty to assert its predominance on the area. The castle is torn down during the Succession War of Brittany (1341-1364); in which Jean de Montfort and Charles de Blois fought over the rule of the duchy. At the end of 14th century and the beginning of the 15th it is rebuilt by Charles de Dinan and acquires its actual plan. In the middle of the 15th century, the castle reaches its peak and becomes a true princely residence. It then belongs to Françoise de Dinan and her husband Gilles de Bretagne, the Duke’s brother. Abandoned in the 17th century, it is saved from neglect in 1981 and is being studied and valorised. The site, which belongs to the Département des Côtes-d’Armor, is a Monument Historique and Espace Naturel Sensible (Historic landmark and Sensitive Natural Area). This remarkable natural site and the singular history of the ruins make this a privileged walking place. A heritage note is available to get more information on the castle. Go back to the castle's parking lot, go down the road on the right towards the port. In the bend, before the fisher houses, go down the stairs on the right, go by the houses' façades on the left. Get back to the street that leads, on the right, to the Gilles de Bretagne square.

When on the Landouar square, go up on the left of the Grande Rue and go back to the office. The Grande Rue, (Main Street), was, for a long time, the only way called “rue”; the other were paths or roads. On this main road, rare houses show only their façades. Right or left the “rangées” (rows of houses) are aligned. At the end of the Impasse du Paradis (Heaven’s dead end) you’ll meet Saint Christopher, protector of the travelers. This granite statue from the 15th century proves how long he was celebrated in Jaguen territory.

Plancoët was the safest ford down on the ria. It is also there that the strength of the river could be used. As early as 1223, writings mention mills, like those you can see on each side of the bridge, turned into houses today.

Plancoët is also a port at the back of a ria. In the middle of the 19th century, the light boats were numerous to dock there and load or unload grains, apples, wood, « marne » ou « tangue » of the sea (mud to spread on the fields, used as a fertiliser on the crops) The arrival of the train in 1879 meant its decline.

Going down the steps you arrive in a valley away from the main road. In Chateaubriand's time, these houses were the only ones in the hamlet. Nazareth district was an craftemen's district. The façades gave out on the street; the shop was held at the ground floor (the old shop windows can be made out on the façades) and the people lived on the first floor. At the back was a back-shop, a work-shop, sometimes an oven, a garden for the food missing and at the bottom of the valley, water, the essential element to every and any craft. "My grand-mother lived in the only street of the hamlet de l'Abbaye, a pretty small house of which the gardens went down in terraces to a valley and at the end of which a small fountain, surrounded by willow trees, could be found. Established 13 years ago at the entrance to Mont Saint-Michel, in a place called "La Caserne", our restaurant "La Ferme Saint-Michel" is dedicated to enhancing the image of this illustrious site by offering a warm welcome and quality bistronomic dining. Entirely "home-made", our cuisine is prepared by a highly professional team under the guidance of a talented chef. Our dishes are prepared using the finest, carefully selected local produce. The introduction of a 4-day week in 2 shifts enables us to provide continuous service from 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., 7 days a week. Our ambition is to make Mont Saint-Michel a showcase for the excellence of local produce.

After the Plage des Haas, the costal path follows the abbey’s park. A gate allows you to access this private property and discover its remarkable edifice. History and legend tell us that in the 5th century, two twin monks, Jacut and Guéthenoc, arrived on this peninsula called « Landoac » looking for a fitting place to create a hermitage. A Benedictine monastery was established there and had a great influence on the region’s development and evolution until the French Revolution. Sold as Bien National (National Good), sold again many times, the abbey knows many vicissitudes and different uses (Border guard caserns, home to a wealthy foreign family...). In 1875, the monastery’s ruins are bought by the Congrégation des Sœur de l’Immaculée: a religious order from St-Méen-le-Grand (Ille-et-Vilaine), they’ll turn it into a nursing home for the nuns and a free school for the children of the area. The restoration starts right away. To finance the school, the nuns host, firstly the British tourists who came, under doctor’s orders, to take sea water and hot algae baths. They stream in right from 1876. That’s the start of the “guesthouse”. Along the years, the summer holiday goers keep growing in numbers; the nuns develop the hotel capacities of the Abbey and diversify the activities and the hosting: the Abbey is now a guesthouse and a high place of cultural and spiritual encounters. Please respect the environment and the quietness of the residents.

The small manor Des Portes is rebuilt in the 19th century by the Danican family, St-Malo shipowners. In 1978 it becomes the municipal town-hall after having been bought a few years earlier. The park, surrounded by high stone walls is a leisure area nowadays. It houses a few children's games and an agreable camping site, most of the year. It is also a place where the flowers abound, the village actually obtained a regional prize for its flowering and is proud to have the 1flower label.

This area by the lake is heaven for fishermen, numerous to come to tickle black-basses and pikes. Everything is laid out: parking-lot for cars and recreational vehicles, picnic tables, bridges and wild landscapes.

The sports field (foot-ball, tennis...), strawberry fields and a camper-van area can be found there.
