From the En Mauran hill to the banks of the Canal du Midi, this circular walk around the village of Ayguesvives offers sweeping views across the Hers valley. Along the way, you'll come across panoramic views of the Pyrenees, between ridges and valleys, and local producers in the surrounding area. Follow the red and white GR653 markings all the way along. This hike between ridges and valleys offers fine views over the Toulouse plain and the Lauragais farmlands, which change colour with the seasons. Discover the village of Baziège and its fertile hills shaped by the Autan wind. A stopover on the Roman road from Narbonne to Toulouse, Baziège was an important commercial centre in the Middle Ages. Its salt and wheat markets (in the 11th and 18th centuries) and then its pastel markets in the Renaissance contributed to its fortunes.

Here, more than anywhere else, the land undulates as if lifted by a swell triggered by the Autan wind. On this walk, just outside Toulouse, enjoy panoramic views of the Hers valley and the Montagne Noire from the hills of the Lauragais region of Toulouse. Practical advice for horse riders: A section suitable for galloping between (3) and (4), a dirt track for 1.2 km.

This pleasant walk to the Notre-Dame de Maravals chapel offers numerous panoramic views of the Hers Valley, whilst following a botanical trail that showcases the local diversity of plant life. Comments: - Dangerous junctions at point 2 and after point 4: crossing the D 31 road, poor visibility. - Crossing farmyards – keep dogs on a lead. - Water points at the cemeteries in Montlaur and Maravals. - Option to shorten the loop by skipping the two side routes (-2.2 km) Start: car park at Montlaur Town Hall. Practical advice for horse riding and mountain biking: Horse riders: a section suitable for galloping between 2/ and 1/ on the return leg, with a grassy track for 400m. This route is not recommended for the second side trail (steps). Mountain bikers: for the second detour, dismount at the steps leading to the cemetery.

The Négra lock was one of the stops of the "Barque de Poste" which provided passenger transport between Toulouse and Agde from 1681. From Toulouse, the boats arrived for lunch at the Négra lock (dinner). Travellers found nearby an inn, a cooler to cool drinks and a chapel that can still be visited. Montgeard was a walled village founded in 1317, in the forest of Nailloux, by the King of France Philippe V (The Long). By this act he asserted his authority in the Lauragais hills, the cradle of Catharism and the hostility of the catholic church. Today, Montgeard is a charming, little village on a hill. But it had its hour of glory in the 16th century. Indeed, in the past, wealthy merchants lived in Montgeard: from simple landowners, they had become important figures thanks to the culture of pastel, a dyeing plant with which clothes could be dyed blue. Discover the magnificent 16th century church, entirely financed by the pastel merchants of the village and the "château", a splendid mansion dating back to 1555. Truly a rural heritage in all of its diversity, this museum interests the young as much as older generations who are interested in going back into their past. The museum’s collections are on display on the ground floor of Auterive Town Hall, in a setting built from local bricks and pebbles from the nearby Ariège. The exceptionally well-preserved collections span a period from the 18th to the 21st century. As you wander through the aisles leading to 23 arcades, you will discover or rediscover many trades that have often disappeared, such as woodworking trades (a collection of planes, saws, a wood-turning lathe, etc.), wheelwrighting, clog-making, forestry and woodcutting, stoneworking, milling (including a locally discovered Gallo-Roman hand-operated rotary millstone), shoemaking, carding, rope-making, tinsmithing, itinerant knife-grinders, clockmakers, winegrowers and farmers – including a fine collection of yokes, some of which are very old. You will also find agricultural machinery, hand-operated everyday tools and wooden implements for washing clothes, the butter churn … etc. Artisanal hat-making, hairdressing, hosiery and haberdashery, recreational and professional fishing, hunting with firearms or traps, weighing scales from all eras, the early days of computing and the telephone, schools and their pen holders – which visiting children use with great interest – the fire service (19th-century hand-operated pump, hoses, helmets, uniforms) and exhibits relating to medical, surgical (instruments dating from the Empire period to the 19th century), veterinary, dental and laboratory activities … etc. Always on hand to provide further information or an anecdote, the volunteers from the “Amicale du Musée d’Auterive” also welcome groups by appointment, all year round.

In the heart of the Lauragais region, the 5-hectare Lac de l'Orme Blanc has been transformed into an 80-metre-long beach. A favourite spot for families, anglers and campers, Lac de l'Orme Blanc is ideal for walks and picnics. There is a barbecue and several picnic tables around the lake. A paying beach has been set up for the summer season. This is a category 2 fishing lake. A footpath leads around the lake (1.5 km) and offers shaded areas with tables and benches for picnics. Fishing is permitted on the lake, where the fish stocks are particularly rich and varied.
