This Major Hiking route, with a distance of around 34 kilometres, allows you to cross through the villages of: Penne, Vaour, Roussayrolles, Marnaves and Cordes-sur-ciel. A full immersion in nature and culture guaranteed! This route takes you through villages with evocative names: Penne and its castle standing on its rocky spur, Vaour, its dolmen and its commandery, seat of the Knights Templar and Hospitallers, Roussayrolles and its "Mère Dieu" spring fountain, Marnaves and its Roquereine castle which dominates the Cordes region, and Cordes-sur-ciel, a medieval town, a high place of heritage due to its exceptional site and its remarkable architectural heritage Nature and culture guaranteed!

In a natural setting sculpted by Aveyron, Penne’s unique village-style architecture, built into the rock, is in harmony with its surroundings: a limestone cliff backdrop. Castle and village combined: Around 560, the castle of Penne was built at the behest of Frédégonde, wife of Chilpéric I, king of Neustria, a woman who would stop at nothing to hold power. Thus she made Chilperic's first wife and his two sons disappear. Her rivalry with Brunehaut, Queen of Austrasia, is famous. War ravaged their states and Brunehaut died on the orders of Clotaire II, son of Frédégonde. Modernised and enlarged, the castle of Penne sheltered Cathars in the 13th century. One hundred years later, the English occupied it for more than thirty years. Finally, the Protestants dismantled it in 1586... Under Henry IV, the stones were used to rebuild the village, which now merges with the castle. Both enrich a site that has become quite unusual.

Close to the Grésigne forest, the Mespel path follows the shapes of the arid hills and allows you to discover the diversity that makes this region so rich. Natura 2000 area. After leaving the Vère valley, the rock shelters at Larroque surprise hikers and give them access to the Mespel limestone plateau with its holm oaks, filaria and pistachio trees. From the path, hikers have a view of the medieval village of Puycelsi. Larroque offers a shady and picturesque stop-off in a green setting, beside the river, at the foot of a pink limestone cliff with natural caves. It's on the path that the old Puycelsiens (inhabitants of Puycelsi) used to visit the Roucanels (inhabitants of Larroque) that the hiker sets off. Views of the Grésigne national forest and the 13th-century Notre-Dame des Bois chapel (20-minute round trip from Mespel). Legend has it that on two occasions the materials used to build the chapel in the hamlet were found in its present location.

Puycelsi is like an outpost of the Quercy Causses. The crossing of the village reveals architectural treasures. The route is dedicated to the cause of plants, from the Conservatory orchard to the ancestral vaults of the Grésigne oak groves. The great forest of Grésigne: Spread over 3526 hectares, the Grésigne forest remains today the most important forest of the Tarn and the largest oak forest (60% sessile oak, 15% pedunculate oak) of the south of France... Because no one has failed to exploit it extensively over the centuries. Its use in regulated felling dates back to François I, who authorised the felling of 150 trees per year to transform them into staves for barrels. In the 17th century, Jean-Baptiste Colbert had it used for the framework of Louis XIV's ships. The glassmakers threw it ashore to fuel their furnaces and make a fine, bluish glass whose formula was lost. The charcoal burners cut the wood to produce charcoal, and the local residents used it for heating.

Facing the ramparts of Puycelsi, an orchard unlike any other welcomes and carefully preserves the most hardy species of fruit and vines... A true genetic reservoir and precious guardian of forgotten flavours. The conservatory of ancient fruit species and vines: They were known in the past and the countryside was full of them in their orchards, but today, a certain number of fruit and vine varieties are disappearing. This is why the Department of the Tarn created the conservatory in 1986. The actions carried out aim to implement the environmental policy linked to the preservation of biological diversity and are part of a sustainable development approach. The collection plots, installed on 6 ha, house varieties of apple trees, pear trees, plum trees, cherry trees, peach trees and old local and regional vines that are under threat. Currently, more than 800 fruit tree introductions and 102 varieties for a total of 4,000 trees and 550 vines are planted. The conservatory's mission is to safeguard this biological heritage, to identify it, to evaluate it and to develop it on an educational, economic and scientific level.

In the shade of hundred-year-old oaks, the Grésigne national forest will give your walk a special flavour. The Grésigne state forest is the largest in the Tarn and one of the largest oak forests in Europe. It is the third richest forest in Europe in terms of insects, with 2,400 distinct families, after the Fontainebleau massif and the Bialoweja reserve in Poland. This entomological wealth was also the reason why the forest was classified as a Natura 2000 site in 2007. Special management measures are applied in the forest to preserve this particularity: by conserving old trees and increasing the amount of dead wood left on the ground.

The national forest of Grésigne is around 9000 acres of pure liberty. It’s Europe’s biggest forest of sessile oak and a place that is both wild and unique. A rich variety of wildlife lives here and you will often see stags, deer, otters, weasels and more than a hundred different varieties of nesting birds. The Grésigne provided firewood and some carpentry, wood for the staves used in the cooperage for Gaillac wine, charcoal until the 1950s and wood for the furnaces of the Grésigne glassmakers, the last of whom died out in 1850. The rationally exploited and maintained forest is today a place for big game hunting. The highest point (Montoulieu, 480m) of the primary era, made of sandstone, gave its name to the Grésigne forest. The surrounding plateaus are from the Jurassic period (secondary era) and are composed of limestone. The Romans having occupied the Grésigne, there remain oppida (earthen mounds used for defense), vestiges of camps and a Roman road on the territory of Puycelsi. A protected nature with an exceptional fauna and flora, an enchanting place where reigns the mystery of a great secret, the glassmakers of Grésigne.

The dolmen was classified as a historical monument in 1889. The chamber is about 3.30m long and between 1m and 1.20m wide. Its height is 1.10m. The chamber is currently covered by two slabs. Originally, it was a single slab that rested only on part of the top of the orthostats. This slab was 5m long, 2.20m wide and 0.50m thick. Its weight was estimated at 12 tonnes. All the slabs are made of local limestone. Access: From Septfonds, take the D76 towards St-Cirq. After the beginning of the forest, take the path on the left towards Clavel. In Clavel, turn left and at the fork in the road turn right. After the Spanish cemetery, continue on the path and take the first path on the right, then the next one on the right. Then take the first path on the left (tennis court of the dolmen) and the first on the right. Then follow the path at the back of the tennis court (on the right). 2) The Finelle Dolmen (Chemin de Finelle): consists of two large orthostats and a bedside slab covered with a roof slab. The chamber is 2.60m long and 1.20m wide. Its height is 1.16m. The largest orthostate is 3.60m long. Access: The dolmen of Finelle is on the right of the path. 3) The Dolmen of Peyrelevade (Chemin des dolmens): partially buried underground. A large slab 3m wide and 3.70m long covers a chamber 2.90m long and 1.60m wide. The chamber is delimited by two orthostats and a bedside slab on the west side. As with the other dolmens in the region, it is oriented east-west (open to the east). Access: The dolmen of Peyrelevade is on the left of the dolmen path. 4) The Menhir of Bartalbenque (Chemin de Bartalbenque): visible in a private property. Access: The menhir is on the left of the Bartalbenque path.
