Chemin des Anglais

DURATION: 5 hours round trip Ascent: + 241m Descent: - 256m ? ITINERARY Take the exit road CD 41 - Route de la Montagne. Park in the small car park on the left. ? The most interesting way to get to La Grande Chaloupe is to go on foot via the Chemin des Anglais. The Chemin Cr?mont or Chemin des Anglais is one of the numerous hiking paths on the island. It links La Possession town centre with La Montagne in Saint-Denis. Very well-known by hiking enthusiasts, the path owes its name to Honor? de Cr?mont, Authorising Officer of La R?union in the second half of the 18th century. The path follows the edge of the rock face that forms the north-west coast of the island. It overlooks the coastline road from a great height. This paved path of around 8 km long, runs along the top of the rock face and overlooks the ocean. At the intersection, take the T?te de Tunel path and then the Cr?mont path. ? Return possible: using the same path via public transport, Yellow coach - Line C. ? HISTORIC FOCUS This road is the oldest on the island. The work was carried out between 1730 and 1732. The Chemin des Anglais passes via the ?let de La Grande Chaloupe, one of its most famous sections. It was there that in 1810 English troops disembarked and took the paved paths to conquer the capital. Since this event, the name "Chemin des Anglais" (English path) has been used for the whole path, which has been the property of the Department of La R?union since 1948. ? Practical information: There is very little shade in the summer - ensure you have water, a sun hat and sun cream. Modification test - English - 09/11/2016

Bassin Pigeon - Ravine Bernica
1425 km

Bassin Pigeon - Ravine Bernica

DURATION: 30min round trip   ITINERARY After walking for 5 minutes across long grass along the river, you will begin to climb, via a small path, along the side of the rock face. Creepers hang down and several bushes cling onto the rock. The path overlooks the stagnant Bassin Pigeons pond.   Go up to the viewing point and enjoy the silence of the ravine. This silence can seem surprising since the path is close to the road. You are sure to feel as though you are in another world!   All along the path you may meet tropicbirds, endemic to La R?union, and admire their beauty.   To get there: From Saint-Paul town centre, take the direction of Plateau Caillou (the Royal Road) and not the Route des Tamarins (which will take you below the Bernica ravine). Turn left onto the Tour des Roches. After 50 metres, park your car and take the dirt road.   HISTORIC FOCUS Celebrated by the great poet Leconte de Lisle, this important ravine flows into the Saint-Paul lake and is its main tributary. The Bernica Ravine was known as a wild, natural site conducive to many stories. At the beginning of the 19th century, it acted as a hideaway for Madame Desbassayns and the scene of many power struggles that this pro-slavery campaigner undertook in order to gain power for her family at the head of Bourbonnaise society.   Several years later, she left an indelible mark on the history of French literature, with her romantic beauty inspiring Leconte de Lisle to write an eponymous poem, this location becoming a setting for the conclusion of George Sand's novel "Indiana".   Walking in the heart of the Bernica Ravine is to walk in the footsteps of Charles Marie Leconte de Lisle.   Useful information: An adventure trail is offered by Pascal Colas on the site of Ravine Bernica, which combines hiking and climbing.

Le Tour des Roches - Le Vieux Saint-Paul

Le Tour des Roches - Le Vieux Saint-Paul

DURATION: 1 hour   ITINERARY Take the direction of the savannah and take the path that goes up to the Saint-Paul plain.  As you walk, on your right you will see the sign "Tour des Roches". Just stay on this road and you will reach the water mill.   HISTORICAL FOCUS The Tour des Roches: the whole of La Réunion in one glance...   The music of water, the whistling of birds, the density of the vegetation (bamboos, coconut trees, papyrus, palm trees, etc.), the Tour des Roches is a peaceful place where living is good and history is rich. It was the first part of the island to have been inhabited.   In fact, Vieux Saint-Paul, apart from the proximity of the pool and the construction of the irrigation channels, was ideal for the harvests of the first colonists who settled in this area, establishing the seat of the Bourbon government. They developed self-sufficient farming.   This site therefore has inherited a water mill. This was part of a cassava mill: the movement of the water turned the wheel and produced energy. It dates from 1820 and was replaced by an exact copy of the original a few years ago. If you don't mind cold water, you can put your feet into the small pool adjoining the mill.    PRACTICAL INFO: don't forget an insect repellent... This ia a family walk to be done by car or by bike. Pascal Colas, a professional guide, offers 3-hour guided tours with commentary (Water mill, Tamil Temple), for 35 €. More information on 0692 60 58 66 or by email: colas.pascal.ar@wanadoo.fr

Coming from the south, leave the centre of Saint-Paul and follow signs to Grande Fontaine. After the bridge, turn left (you will see the old washtub on your left), continue on, passing the small ravine and then park your car. 5 minutes from Saint-Paul town centre, a relaxing, calm and bucolic walk. Situated in a ravine that divides the Tour des Roches road, the Bassin Long is not well-known, but is worth the detour. To get there, there is a well-kept path along the left bank (looking upstream) of a small stream. Wide and flat, it is accessible to all. Papyrus and taro plants grow along the river The path is marked with a sign "Bassin Long". From the beginning of the path, you can contemplate the beauty of the place. This refreshing walk is set in a magnificent context: dense vegetation mixed with local life. The path stops at the pool but you can easily continue along the ravine among the rocks. You can explore small pools covered in duckweed. After around 30 minutes walk, you will reach a dead-end. You are sure to see several goats. Chemin Pavé Bellemène

Chemin Pavé Bellemène

DURATION: 1 hour round trip   ITINERARY On this historic walk, you will discover one of Saint-Paul's oldest paved paths. This path is very well kept and offers magnificent views over Saint-Paul bay.   To go there, take the Tour des Roches road (along the water mill). To help you get your bearings, you will see mango fields and several places where you can park your car. Walk a little to the 'Bouillon' bus stop, which is opposite the "Allée des Cocos" snack bar. You cannot get lost, a wooden sign indicates the direction you should take to join the Bellemène paved path. Walk alongside the shop and into the housing estate, keep following the signs and don't leave the "white" path until you reach the entrance to the path. After the last metal house, you will be following in the footsteps of the local people, where carts pulled by cattle, or other transportation, used to take this route to go to Bellemène. All along your ascent, you will be surrounded by tropical plants (sugar-apple trees, flamboyant trees, tamarind trees. jujube, etc.) and spectacular views over Saint-Paul bay and the beautiful mountains. Take the same path to return!   HISTORICAL FOCUS In 1719, three paths linking the Hauts de Saint-Paul were paved by Deforges-Boucher, to facilitate the passage of horses and draught oxen. The paved Bellemène path, in former times called "Montée d'Hibon" was used frequently until the 1970s. There is a story or legend that Marie Elixène de Lanux, Leconte de Lisle's muse, used this path to go to Saint-Paul. And these lines written by the poet come to mind: "Under a cloud of light chiffon chill, every Sunday morning, you would go to town in a wicker palankin, over the paths of the hill." The ascent, which lasts 30-40 minutes, enables you to get to Bellemène, in the Hauts de Saint-Paul, offering you a progressively more magnificent view over the Saint-Paul coastline, from the Cap La Houssaye to the town of Le Port.   Practical info: you will need good walking shoes, a hat, water and sun cream! We advise you to walk this path when the weather is cloudy, because it is not shady, so take a sun hat and especially some water.   Advice: We advise you to stop at the Auberge du Pavé when you reach the end of the paved path, and enjoy a delicious lunch before taking to the path again to walk off your food!

Bassin Vital

Bassin Vital

DURATION: 1 hour 15 round trip   Please note:  There is an abrupt climb at the beginning.   ITINERARY From the main road, take the direction of Saint-Paul / Bois de Nèfles / Savanna. 300 m after the petrol station, turn right towards the Tour des Roches and drive for 1.7 km until you reach the car park on the left.   By bus: take line 4 bus run by Kar'Ouest from Saint-Paul bus station.   The path (which is not well sign-posted) runs along the ravine at first. After 5 minutes, on the right, follow the yellow and white signposts. You have to cross the ravine and start an ascent that will last 30 to 40 minutes. After this climb, you will reach a point where there are three different paths.  You must therefore be careful to follow the yellow and white signs and follow the path that goes to the left. The path that slopes down takes you directly to the Bassin Vital in around 15 minutes.   It is of course not possible to bathe there, the water is murky and certainly very deep.   Cross the ravine to get to the other side.   More courageous hikers can turn right, the path goes up to the "Hangar" area, in Bois de Nèfles. In 15 minutes you will get to a platform that will enable you to see a panorama across the whole bay of Saint-Paul, as well as the Grande Fontaine area. You can thus overlook the whole Bassin Vital. Take the same path to return to the Bassin.   If you do not want to continue to the Hangar, turn left and this will allow you to rejoin the Tour des Roches path.   Practical information Take insect repellent in the hot season, a sun hat and some water!

From Sans Souci to Deux Bras

ITINERARY This route is, without doubt, the best way of entering the Cirque de Mafate without too much difficulty, with breathtaking views all along the aqueduct. Like a photographer's lens, as you advance along the path, the îlets de Mafate are gradually revealed to you.   From Sans-Souci: Leave your car near the Tamil temple in the village of Sans-Souci. You will see a bus stop nearby, take the Kar'Ouest (line 8.5) and get off at the "Citerne Rouge" bus stop. The path will be on your left. After 1 hour of ascent, you will link up with the Canalisation des Orangers path, a horizontal channel that is 13 km long and 1-2 metres wide, overlooking the Rivière des Galets, 400-500 metres below. After 4 hours walking you can take a rest at the Captage (Channel) des Orangers (1,000m). Situated in a canyon with very narrow walls, this channel collects the water from the Orangers and Grand'Mère ravines, providing drinking water for much of the town of Saint-Paul.   When you have finished your refreshing break, take the direction of  Ilet des Lataniers, Rivière des Galets, then Deux-Bras. On arriving at Deux-Bras, you can take the 4X4 and ask to be dropped at the entrance to Sans-Souci. Walk up for around 30 minutes and you will find yourself near the Tamil Temple where you left your car.   HISTORICAL FOCUS In the beginning this aqueduct began at the Ilet des Orangers where there were numerous fruit trees growing at the time, it appears. Several trees still grow there with bitter fruit resembling small oranges, known locally as "bigarades". This is one possible explanation of the origin of the name of the islet, as is the presence in former times of the chief maroon "Orange" in this same place. He set up camp on the end of a piece of land that was difficult to access, surrounded by the Ravine Grand'Mère to the east and the Ravine des Orangers to the west. It was at this islet where maroon resistance was the most tenacious.   Currently around 20 families share the two parallel plateaus, the edge of the rampart and the lower part on the Roche Plate path.
