The island was a very popular destination for the Parisian middle class seeking coolness along the Seine. "Monet is the Impressionist who is most identified with the Seine. Vincent Van Gogh - The Seine with the bridge at the Grande Jatte - oil on canvas, 32 x 40.5 cm - Van Gogh Museum English (origin) In May 1887, Van Gogh began working on a series of 30 river scenes and landscapes along the Seine in Paris. He painted The Bridge at Courbevoie in a single session, focusing on the reflections in the water. He was less concerned with using correct perspective or with the proportions of the human figures. Van Gogh used dashes of paint in all sorts of colors,side by side and sometimes layered. This was his own free variation on Pointillism. That method was familiar to him from the work of artists such as Georges Seurat (1859-1891) and Paul Signac (1863-1935). They used mainly small dots of colour.

Mont Valerien : the memorial of fighting France The Mont-Valérien memorial was the main place of execution by the German army on French territory during World War II. These men, murdered because they were resistance fighters condemned to death or hostages, Jews and Communists, are all reminders of our history which naturally made this site a Mecca of national memory. After the war, the site was chosen by General de Gaulle to honor the memory of the Dead for France from 1939 to 1945; he inaugurated the memorial of fighting France there on June 18, 1960. Inside the site, the “Remembrance Trail” allows you to follow the path of those who were about to be shot: from the chapel, the walls of which still keep traces of graffiti engraved by convicts, in the clearing of the executed. The discovery of the Mont-Valérien memorial allows us to better understand what the German repression was, the French collaboration, and what was the journey of those "who loved life to death.

This is the name that Alfred Sisley gave to his painting in 1873. At the time, he likes to paint Paris and its surroundings and finds his inspiration in the landscapes as the banks of the Seine. The island of Jatte, famous place of celebration, was painted at the same time by other painters like pointillist George Seurat with his famous "" A Sunday afternoon on the Island of the Grande Jatte "".
