Le Val des Cévennes: adventure in Florac, Lozère

Walk a part of the draille de la Margeride (drovers’ road), in the footsteps of the shepherds who used it to move their flocks from the plains to the high pastures of Lozère. Start above the holiday village “Le Pont du Tarn” (in the Azinières part of Florac) or on the square by the village hall in Bédouès (take the D998 towards Florac, at the crossing turn right towards La Baume, and then turn left at the metal bridge, to pick up the signposted walk). From the car park above the holiday village, join the road (Chemin d’Yssenges) and go uphill to a track. Your path follows the main track, but cuts off one of its hairpin bends. At the next crossing, take the track on the right. At the Col d’Issenges pass, go downhill on the main track on the right, then take a small path on the left to reach Chadenet. In Chadenet, go downhill on the small lane and take the path on the right. During the descent, you leave this to take a small steep path. At its bottom, turn right onto a road that crosses the campsite and continue on the path above the Tarn. If you started at Bédouès, turn left at the metal bridge to cross it, then left again to reach the car park by Bédouès village hall. If not, to get back to the holiday village, continue straight ahead on the road and then on the path to Azinières. Take the road opposite to reach “Le Pont du Tarn”.

From lanes to little squares, this walk crosses the town of Florac to reach a beautiful grass amphitheatre near the spring of the river Pesquié (Pêcher).

This circuit is ideal for a little family bike trip and a swim in the Tarn, as well as exploring the village of Bédouès and its surroundings. Mountain-bike route #9. Exit right from the car park, towards La Baume. Before La Baume, take the path (GR70) that runs alongside the waterway to get to the Azinières housing scheme. You return by retracing your “footsteps”. Back in Bédouès, the route takes you around the village. Head for Pontèse to join up with a track upstream of the Tarn (there-and-back).

All sides of the Eschine d'Aze can be seen from this route, which brings together all aspects of mountain-biking: stony track and technical path. You will need strong legs! Mountain-bike route #11. From the car park at the village hall, exit right onto the D 998. After a few metres, turn right towards La Baume. Immediately after the bridge, turn left and cycle along the Tarn to the Terre Rouge housing scheme. Before you get to the village de vacances (holiday village), turn right for the climb towards Issenges (GR 43). Keep going straight. Below the Eschine d'Aze, follow the track on the right towards Les Puechs. Before you get to the D 135, take the track on the right to go downhill to Malaval and then Malbosc. Take the road leading to Chadenet and go downhill on a magnificent path that will take you to Cocurès. Join up with the D 998 and cross the bridge to return to Bédouès.

This circuit goes through the Ramponenche state forest (Douglas fir, Scots and black pines) to end up alongside the river Tarn. Mountain-bike route # 10. Exit right from the car park onto the D 998. After a few metres, turn right towards La Baume. Immediately after the bridge turn right and cycle along the Tarn to the campsite and the D 998. Turn right onto the bridge, then take the first left, which is a smooth track that runs alongside the Tarn before going uphill to the Col de Perpau. Just after this pass – the route's highest point (971 m) – begin the descent towards Bédouès. After the Col du Lempézou, take the single-track path leading to the D 998. Turn left onto the road, then turn right onto the bridge over the Tarn, just after the campsite. Go past the holiday village (village de vacances), then take the track on the right bank of the Tarn to return to Bédouès (N.B.: bikes are travelling in both directions on this section).

A smooth route around Le Puecheral. You will cycle on a part of the draille de la Margeride to join up with the path to Cocurès and then go through Bédouès village. Mountain-bike route #12. From the car park at the village hall, exit right onto the D 998. After a few metres, turn right towards La Baume. Immediately after the bridge, turn left and cycle along the river Tarn to the Azinières/Terre Rouge housing scheme. Before you get to the village de vacances (holiday village), turn right to Issenges (GR 43). Just before the Manor, go right to Chadenet. At Chadenet, take a magnificent path on the right, fairly smooth, that leads to Cocurès (Les Gardettes). Join up with the D 998 and cross the Tarn to return to Bédouès.

The plateau of the Causse Méjean seems to stretch out forever. But appearances can be deceptive! This flatness conceals a number of short steep climbs. Mountain-bike route # 2. From the Col de Pierre Plate, go down a small technical descent to join up with the road leading to Le Tomple. Go through the hamlet and continue to La Condamine. At the crossroads with the road going towards Montbrun, go left for a few metres, then turn right onto a small path. Join up with the track leading to Fraissinet-de-Poujols. Go through the hamlet and turn right towards Poujols. Continue straight all the way to Chaldas. After Chaldas, at Point 1015, take the path going downhill to Chamblon. Go into the hamlet and continue on the road (GR 60) and then on the track (GR 60). Cross the D 16 and skirt Le Fraisse farm to get to Nivoliers. In Nivoliers, head towards Cavaladette on a former village track. Below Cavaladette, take the road and, at the cross, turn right onto the track leading to Cavalade, Cros Roux, Cros Garnon. In Cros Garnon, pass in front of the church before going first to La Mecoire and then to Valbelle. Take the D 16 for 3 km to return to the car park at the Col de Pierre Plate.

After an uphill section in a former chestnut grove, you have panoramic views over the Mimente valley, the Can de l’Hospitalet and the edge of the Causse Méjean with the Rocher de Roquefort cliffs towering over Florac. The walk starts from the car park at the town hall (mairie) in La Salle Prunet. Use the pedestrian crossing to cross the main road (N106), then go under the former railway bridge. Go up the concrete ramp and fork left. The path is briefly tarred and goes downhill for a few metres. Just after the stone house, the path goes uphill between houses on the right. The path comes out at the bottom of a field that you cross (50 m) to reach a larger path. Turn right onto this, towards La Valette. Continue on the main path through the chestnut grove and oak forest. At the crossing, continue straight ahead for the hamlet of La Valette, then return the way you came. Take the path that goes downhill on the left through the chestnut grove (electric fence – please close after yourself), then take the road on the right. After the hairpin bend, continue for 50 m to reach a path on the right, just above a house.  Take the road to the last hairpin bend before the N106 main road, then turn right onto the old railway track to reach the village. Cross the bridge, continue for another 50 m and turn right to retrace your steps to the car park.

A sinkhole, lavogne (man-made-water hole) and dolmen are your signposts on this exploration of the agro-pastoral systems of yesteryear and today. From the crossroads, do not go towards La Condamine but instead take the path that crosses the vast farmed plain. Pass in between the ruins of Combe Lebrouze and the dolmen and continue straight on a path that heads into the small valley of Mativet. At the crossing, turn left onto the track that goes into the small valley and joins up with the road to Le Tomple. Turn left onto the road, go through the hamlet of Le Tomple, and take the track downhill towards a pass (col). NB: Not long before the pass, take the path on the left to the lavogne, then take the path above the lavogne to return to the lane leading to La Condamine. Turn left, pass in front of La Condamine and continue back to the car park.

Le Single trail goes around the summit of the same name, part limestone part schist, and offers numerous viewpoints over the upper Tarn valley and Mont Lozère. Mountain-bike route #5. Quite smooth despite a descent on a single-lane and stony path. From Ispagnac, cycle to Quézac via the town gardens. Then climb to Javillet and continue on the forestry track to reach Le Tomple. Take the lane on the left (do not go through the hamlet) that joins up with the D 16 road. Go downhill on a stony single-track path to reach a track that leads to Monteils. Go downhill towards Salièges; turn left before you arrive at Salièges and take the path towards Fayet. Bike along the Tarn on this track to Fayet, Bieissette and then Ispagnac.

Immerse yourself in art and nature at Aigoual! This circuit reveals regularly renewed installations inspired by nature and the landscapes of Mont-Aigoual. A total of 12 works installed on an 8km loop. Les Balcons de l'Aigoual" land-art trail Here, artists portray the human/nature relationship and confront the climatic phenomena of the Aigoual. The works are therefore constantly evolving. Art inserted into nature returns to an essential source of artistic creation: observation and inspiration by nature. This itinerary allows visitors to cross different atmospheres and places, suggesting a sensitive and intimate approach to nature. Discover an eco-museum in an old mill, with a fun exhibition for everyone. Children and adults alike can take an indoor and outdoor tour to learn more about this important part of our daily lives! In the heart of the Vallée Borgne, in the village's old mill, the Maison de l'Eau has naturally found its place. Around this witness to the past, a modern and entertaining exhibition presents water in the Cévennes. Mister Beaver, the mascot, invites young and old to a more unusual visit, combining questions, games and experiments... An interpretive trail completes the visit with a presentation of some of the tree species native to the Cévennes. This is a fun walk for the whole family, during which you'll come face-to-face with the birds that pass between forest and river. Equipped with a pair of binoculars, you can follow the signposted path to learn how to observe and recognize birds (also downloadable from our website). In addition to visits, the Maison de l'Eau also offers environmental education sessions for schoolchildren, leisure centers and the general public, as well as nature outings (on the trail of the beaver, the otter, the little people of the water...), walks, visits to the village... Come and stroll along the béal, let yourself be lulled by the sound of water on the mill wheels! There are 3 interpretation trails in the Vallée Borgne area, including one on the route of the Maison de l'Eau des Plantiers.

The calm deep stretches of the Tarn are good areas to settle for the European beaver, which lives in a lodge dug into the river bank. An essentially vegetarian animal, it bases its diet on cellulose. It eats young shoots, bark, aquatic plants, and foliage that is abundant in the riparian forest. It is thus useful in regulating the woody vegetation of river banks, facilitating the development of riverside fauna and flora. Through its activities, it prevents the potentially dangerous accumulation of dead wood during floods. It does not build dams.

This can be seen on your left, in a gap in the forest. It was only a share-cropping farm, whose buildings were in ruins, when the Lord of Issenges bought it in 1658. He lived in it from 1688. This Château, which is no doubt more comfortable than the « maison carrée » (“square house”), was built in a river bend of the Tarn and is surrounded by fertile soils well-suited for crop-growing.

Some vines still grow at the edges of paths or cling to trees and scrub; a few  people still make their own wine. But today it is an anecdotal activity. Florac was once encircled by grapevines growing on terraces, and every farmer made several hundred litres of wine. But in around 1945, rural flight and the arduousness of the work led to these vine arbours being abandoned. In 2003, two wine-growers moved to Ispagnac, and viticulture was reborn.

Monteils is the hamlet in which Louis Brutus Cazal was born and died. He was one of those primary school teachers who were nicknamed “black ravens of the Republic”. He called his daughters Léa Fraternité and Léa Liberté to express his republican sentiments, which were common to many Protestant families at the time. A poet and defender of the Occitan language, he wrote a collection of poems entitled Les Lozériens. From 1925 on, he devoted himself to tourism in the Cévennes and founded the Club Cévenol. His son, Aimé Cazal, laid out two important tourist sites: Bramabiau chasm and Dargilan cave.

Yolande and Christian run a small farm where they make farmhouse goat's cheese, a typically  Cévenol product. Their herd consists of 60 Alpine dairy goats, and all their milk is processed on-site into farmhouse cheese. From late November to late April, the nanny goats have a break so their little ones can feed!

Saint-Saturnin chapel stands at the heart of the village, surrounded by its cemetery. Inside every wall boasts a magnificent painted décor. It was built in the 12th century. Guillaume de Grimoard (the future Pope Urban V) was baptised here in 1309. It is next to the town hall (mairie) and is well worth a detour.

“I moved my sheep to summer pastures all the way in the Margeride. I'm from up there myself. When I was a kid, there were many of us in the family, and whenever we saw a transhumant [seasonally migrating] shepherd pass by, my dad would say: one day you'll have to go off with a shepherd... I left and became a transhumant shepherd. My first stopover was Bonperrier. Then we'd eat at L'Hospitalet, and go down to Florac for the night. I moved pastures with 4,000 sheep.”

In the 16th and17th centuries, a large number of religious conflicts between Catholics and Protestants affected the Cévennes, bringing with them much destruction. After the Peace of Alais was signed by Richelieu and the Duke of Rohan in June 1629, Protestants retained the right to practise their religion, but their fortifications were razed. This included Florac's town walls. The house bearing this information panel is one of the town's oldest: its tower used to watch over Thérond Gate. It also stands at the crossroads of the former road linking Nîmes with Saint-Flour and the former road from Florac to Séverac via the Causse plateau.

Rue Armand Jullié used to be Florac’s trading street and would have been lined with workshops with typical shop fronts. Mule drivers once used this road to carry their goods from the Auvergne down to the Midi, before they were replaced by cart drivers and finally wagoners. More than twenty wagoners would stop off in Florac at the turn of the 20th century. They would rest here and, before resuming their journey, would take on additional horses to help climb the steep hills that awaited them on the road ahead.

  A flora typical for these dry chalky slopes is colonising the pastures: box, juniper, shadbush (Juneberry), briar and blackthorn. These plants content themselves with thin soils but need light. They are well-adapted to drought and heat. The harsh conditions under which these shrubs live is reflected in the toughness of their wood, which is often used for wood-turning or cane-making.

Located in Puéchagut in the commune of Bréau-et-Salagosse, south of the Col de la Broue, on the slopes of the Esperou and Lingas mountains. Located in the Borgne Valley, in the commune of Les Plantiers, our Fontfouillouse gîte welcomes you to an unspoilt valley at the foot of a 12th-century Romanesque church. In the midst of the Cévennes chestnut grove, we have created our group gîte. Our accommodation comprises a large living room/kitchen with direct access to the outside, and sleeping areas for up to 15 people. Lime rendering and the use of chestnut wood blend perfectly with the original stone. The garden offers a variety of relaxation areas for a well-deserved rest. Situated on the edge of the GR70 and very close to the GR61, 'Le Pré de Modestine' is the ideal place to enjoy the end of Stevenson's route, or to organize hikes to discover the Cévennes.
