Discover L'ANCIENNE GARE in Cassagnas, a Lozère Gem

A forest atmosphere, a birdsong and the murmur of a brook accompany you throughout this walk exploring the mythical mountain ranges of the Cevennes. You will see the Signal du Ventalon beacon, Bougès, Fontmort and, on clear days, even the summit of Mont Aigoual! Leave the car park, turn left and go up the lane leading towards Currières (C3), to the Col de la Planette pass. Continue on the lane for 50 m before taking on your left a forestry track towards the Col de Poulio. At this pass, leave the lane to take the track going downhill on the left (GR 72). Turn left again onto an old path that joins up with the tarred lane, which you take downhill back to the car park.

A walk alongside an untamed river, passing through varied forests with panoramic viewpoints over the Cévennes. A unique look at the Cévenol valleys. At the Plan de Fontmort, take the path southeast of the obelisk, which leads to the spring of the Gardon de St-Martin. The path crosses the river several times, then leaves it behind to head for a small valley. The path then winds through the chestnut grove before joining a larger track onto which you turn right. Further on, ignore a path going uphill on the right. Shortly after a small valley, take the first path on the right, which joins the road. Turn right onto the road. Then take the first path on the left, which goes uphill in zigzags. The path joins a track onto which you turn left. After 2 hairpin bends, the track arrives on the ridge. Here, turn right onto the track that follows the ridge. After 750 m, leave the main track to take a path on the right that climbs alongside a fence to the highest point of the ridge. Walk back downhill on the first firebreak, on your right, to return to the Plan de Fontmort.

This is a journey back through time, past the ruins of the Château de Saint-Julien-d'Arpaon, the two menhirs lying nearby, and the disused railway track... From the carpark below the temple (Protestant church), take the path uphill towards the temple, then follow the road to the top of the village. Take the path that runs alongside the Château and go uphill for about 700 m until you reach a lane. Cross it, fork left and go uphill through the heather to the highest point, which is on the western side. Follow the ridge eastwards to the Col de l'Agulharon. Then fork left. Take the lane to Bougès hamlet. As you leave the hamlet, take a downhill path, then a path on the left that runs across the slope, before returning downhill in many hairpin bends to the railway track. Turn right on this track to get back to Saint-Julien-d'Arpaon.

This path nestling on the floor of a charmingly preserved valley is ideal for imagining past life in the Cévennes and gaining a better understanding of life here today. Some clarifications:• At the car park, walk along the lane for 300 m to the first Marker• After Marker 2, take the path on the left (narrow, can be slippery when wet)• Between Markers 15 and 16, the path is narrow• After Marker 18, take the lane to return to the car park.

The sizeable valley in which the hamlet of Flandres stands is known as La Flandonenque and offers lush vegetation, hamlets steeped in history, and the Gardon de St-Germain-de-Calberte with its waterfalls and gours (natural basins). Start by following the dirt track (and stay on this main track). Then leave the track by heading right on L'Escaillou, a skidding track that goes uphill into the woods. At the second road, turn right to reach the hamlet of Flandres. As you leave Flandres, a path goes downhill on the right towards a mill, then joins up with the main track again, which takes you to Nozières. As you leave Nozières, go right at the last house and head for La Fare. The footpath becomes narrower for about 1.5 km. In a sharp bend, it meets a larger track. Turn left and enter La Fare by following the path between the houses. As you leave the hamlet, turn right. Follow the lane for about 100 m and turn left. In another small valley, the path curves to reach Le Vernet on the opposite slope. At Le Vernet, walk below the first house on the right, fork left and go through a barrier and then downhill through the meadow to a sheepfold. The path then joins a trincat (channel for diverting water) to reach a bridge. From the bridge, go up the slope in front of you to return to the starting-point.

This trail showcases the different aspects of Barre-des-Cévennes, from the lanes of the old village to the panoramic viewpoints. A few clarifications:• A few dozen metres after Point 6, take the stairs on the right.• Between Points 9 and 10, the path may be closed by two barriers. Please be sure to close them again after yourself.• Steep uphill section after Point 13.•  At Point 16, do not climb the rocks – risk of falling. •  Steep downhill section after Point 18.

En passant par la draille du Languedoc et la ligne de partage des eaux entre Atlantique et Méditerranée, ce parcours, au pied du Bougès, offre de belles vues sur les cévennes, le massif de l'Aigoual et le mont Lozère. Head downhill on the road that goes through the hamlet of St-Maurice-de-Ventalon. Cross the bridge and go back uphill above the isolated house opposite the hamlet. Take the path on the right that climbs above the broom bushes to an enclosure for horses (please close the gates) before coming out onto a road. Cross the road to get to the Col de Malpertus pass. Take the forestry track that forks right and goes uphill to the east into a private forest. Follow the track until it joins the draille, a large track that is also the GR 68 long-distance hiking-path and goes straight up to the Signal du Ventalon beacon. (Optional detour to the beacon with its viewpoint indicator). Head to the Croix de Berthel. Walk past the ruins and take the draille (also the GR7 and GR 68) to Plo de la Nassette. Take the first path on the right, which leads first through a forest and then over a broom heath on the south-facing slope. The path comes out at the temple by the side of the road.

This walk leads you on the draille du Languedoc (track for seasonal livestock migration) to the bends of the river Tarn, exploring the singular built heritage of this granite area. After the last farm built of granite, turn right as you exit the hamlet onto a paved oxcart track, which goes downhill through large fields. Ford the brook and go back uphill through the beech grove. Go straight ahead at the Col des Rouvières pass. Take the dirt path that joins up with the track before Les Bastides. It climbs through a spruce forest alongside a torrent, then joins up with a track: the draille du Languedoc. At Le Plo de la Nassette, which is the last intersection of drailles before Mont Lozère, take the GR 7-68 straight up the slope. At L'Aubaret, take the GR 7 towards the Pont du Tarn. A short detour leads you to the Pont du Tarn, which you can see through the pine trees. Turn left towards Felgerolles. Before a bend in the river, the path leaves the Tarn behind (on your left) to skirt the Serre de Escoroborats ridge, and joins up with a forestry track that goes downhill to Troubat. Go downhill on the road for 300 m and then take the shortcut across the fields that goes back uphill to Masméjean.

This circuit takes you from the Can (limestone plateau) through the Mimente valley and onto the disused railway track, leting you discover the landscapes of the Cévenol valleys. Mountain-bike route #8. From the Col du Rey, go downhill to and through Barre-des-Cévennes to get onto the GR72 via the four crossroads. Cycle to the Espace Stevenson. From there, take the disused railway track alongside the river Mimente towards Florac as far as  Saint-Julien-d'Arpaon (Stevenson Trail, GR70). Go uphill in the Briançon valley to Bouars and then Ferrières. Once on the Can, take the road leading to the Col du Rey for 2 km.

This circuit goes on grassy tracks and paths over the barren landscapes of the Can de Ferrières and Can de Balazuègnes plateaux, and offers panoramic views onto the Bougès massif and the Mimente valley. From the Col du Rey, head towards Ferrières. Before arriving in the hamlet, take the track on the left leading to the Can de Balazuègnes and the hamlet of the same name. Go through the hamlet and downhill to St-Julien-d'Arpaon. Turn right onto the N 106 for about 1 km, then fork right to start the climb to the Col de l'Oumenet. The track is steep at first, but then becomes smoother. At the pass, take the D 20 towards Barre des Cévennes. Turn left towards La Cure. Skirt La Cure on the left, then pass in front of Le Bouquet, Le Bramadou and Les Bastides. Cross the D 20 and, on the other side, go up a short but steep ascent (400 m). You return to the Col du Rey by skirting Balmegouse farm on the right.

Discover an eco-museum in an old mill, with a fun exhibition for everyone. Children and adults alike can take an indoor and outdoor tour to learn more about this important part of our daily lives! In the heart of the Vallée Borgne, in the village's old mill, the Maison de l'Eau has naturally found its place. Around this witness to the past, a modern and entertaining exhibition presents water in the Cévennes. Mister Beaver, the mascot, invites young and old to a more unusual visit, combining questions, games and experiments... An interpretive trail completes the visit with a presentation of some of the tree species native to the Cévennes. This is a fun walk for the whole family, during which you'll come face-to-face with the birds that pass between forest and river. Equipped with a pair of binoculars, you can follow the signposted path to learn how to observe and recognize birds (also downloadable from our website). In addition to visits, the Maison de l'Eau also offers environmental education sessions for schoolchildren, leisure centers and the general public, as well as nature outings (on the trail of the beaver, the otter, the little people of the water...), walks, visits to the village... Come and stroll along the béal, let yourself be lulled by the sound of water on the mill wheels! There are 3 interpretation trails in the Vallée Borgne area, including one on the route of the Maison de l'Eau des Plantiers.

These transitory landscapes, created by pastureland evolving back into forest, persist due to livestock grazing and slash-and-burn carried out by farmers to maintain grazing areas. Rich in insects, they are frequented by many insect-eating birds. The presence of filed mice and reptiles makes them good hunting-grounds for many birds of prey: buzzards, common kestrels and snake eagles. Different types of heath include broom, heather and fern. Sorbus allegedly derives from sorbitio (beverage, herbal tea) and aucuparia from auceps, bird-catcher. In the autumn, bird-catchers used rowan berries as bait in their tendelles or thrush traps. Some are said to have coated the branches of rowans with glue to capture birds. More simply, hunters lay in wait near rowans to catch blackbirds and thrushes. (P. Grime)

“Strange Cevennes, all paved with graves! You can see them right by each mas (farm).... Usually there is only a tilestone planted in the ground, with neither cross nor ornament, to indicate a grave,... If the family is well-off, the tombs are enhanced by a zinc contain er that keeps the wreaths dry... There are countless properties where the population laid in the ground is ten times greater than the population still standing!” (Roussel Romain,  Almanach Cévenol, 1968).

From a report written by the schoolteacher of Cassagnas in 1874: “Tradition tells us that all of the houses in the parish of Cassagnas were burnt down twice. The date of the first fire has not been passed down to us, but one can still see wall faces in several places that show clearly enough where the houses used to stand... This destruction by fire must have occurred at the beginning of the religious wars, or perhaps it even dates back as far as the English invasion. According to tradition, at the time the village of Cassagnas was located a hundred metres above the current village.” The second fire occurred in 1703, as part of the “great burning” of the Cevennes during the Camisard War. From 1909 to 1968, this railway line linked Florac and Sainte-Cécile-d'Andorge (50 km). A metre-gauge single-track line, it was managed by the department's railway company. It was linked to the SNCF state railway network. The trains transported passengers and merchandise: ore from Ramponenche mine near Florac; baryte from the mine at Jalcreste, and plums, chestnut wood, dried boletus mushrooms, etc., destined for northern France. As you move along the disused line, you will see former engineered constructions (bridges, tunnels, etc.).

Not so long ago, the inhabitants of Bougès still gathered chestnuts here. “We gathered them in the 60s, those were the last years. I saw my parents gathering them, they carried everything on their backs. It was one hell of a job carrying them back up that path.”More recently, the path was still in use. “That path was the postman's path. He came from Saint-Julien by Mijavols, and then he left this way, jumped across the footbridge and went up the other slope. In the old days, the postman walked 40 kilometres a day, it wasn't a restful job.”The path was used for taking grains from  Bougès down to the mill near the railway track. That made it necessary to carry out major improvements, which you can still see today. A supporting wall keeps the path's foundations in place while shaped rock or a hand-built wall protects it from rock slides. Creating many hairpin bends made it possible to reduce the slope's gradient.

The hamlet of Bougès currently has two year-round homes. In the summer, there are 80 to 90 inhabitants descended from families that were originally from here. In 1970, only one couple of retired farmers remained. Then another farming couple settled here: “there was broom right to the doors of the houses”. They restored the terraced meadows and fields that go up in steps behind the hamlet. Today, a farming couple produces Pélardon goats' cheese, and you may well meet their goats grazing calmly under the chestnut trees.

Users and employees still talk of the former railway (CFD) with regret and emotion:“To go to Montpellier on Mondays, I could leave at 6 in the morning, and arrive in Montpellier at 10, and you could get back here in the evening. The train arrived at 10 o'clock in the evening. Now (with the coach), you can go down, but you have to wait for the next day to come back up. It was very useful. Nowadays, if you don't have a car, what do you do? You hitch-hike, you walk!” (P. Grime)“Two years after the train was shut down, we had the idea of putting it back on the track and turning it into a tourist train. We managed to get a railcar to start... We hadn't told anyone: apparently we didn't have the right to do it, we even risked getting a correctional sentence. Nothing happened... Except that at St-Julien-des-Points we gave a blast of this kind of horn that we had, and M., from the restaurant, came up with a litre of pastis, and two or three farmers from the area arrived too. We all cried like babies. We had the impression that the heart of the area was beating again.”  (Revue Cévennes, issue 15)

This commemorates the centenary of the Edict of Tolerance, through which Louis XVI granted Protestants their religious freedom. It was erected on this symbolic site, where several battles took place during the Camisard War. In 1702, Royal troops surprised a group of Camisards, whose leader, Esprit Séguier, they captured; he was burned alive. In 1703, the Camisards attacked Royal troops escorting a messenger and killed the soldiers. In 1704, 500 Camisards ambushed 300 soldiers, over 100 of whom were killed. (P. Grime)

The vast expanses of sweet chestnut groves that still occupy a part of the Cévennes are all man-made. From the Middle Ages onwards, and especially in the 16th century, locals replaced oak and beech with chestnut, essentially for its nuts. In the mid-19th century, a new population boom pushed the Cévenol chestnut grove to its maximum extent. The tree supplies regular, balanced and abundant food, with chestnuts largely replacing grains. The locals' diet (about 2 kg per person per day) was complemented by some rye, pork products, vegetables and pulses. The Cévennes did not experience the great famines that struck other regions, and witness accounts describe the vigour and good health of the inhabitants of the Cévenol valleys.

La Balade Gourmande, Soudorgues's bistro and restaurant, welcomes you with the seasons, and invites you to come and relax over a drink on its summer/winter terrace, and share convivial, festive moments over local cuisine. La Balade Gourmande is a village project run by a collective of around a hundred members. Situated above Lasalle, some twenty kilometers from Anduze and Saint Hippolyte du Fort, the restaurant-bistro invites you to take a gourmet break in the heart of the village of Soudorgues, in a warm atmosphere of Cévenol charm. The setting is ideal for family walks or long hikes. You can discover our chef's specialties based on local, seasonal and, where possible, organic produce. Our bistro is also a venue for events all year round: music, storytelling, theater, etc...

Ideally located in the village of Espérou, take a break in our snack bar before enjoying the great outdoors on the Aigoual massif, in the Cévennes National Park. Open all year round, every day, from 7:00 am to 4:00 pm. Traditional cuisine, homemade dishes and desserts, full menus.

On the terrace or in the dining room, depending on what's available, come and sample our specialities: entrecôte with aligot, salad with warm goat's cheese and homemade bread... The fries are homemade too! We serve from 12 noon to 2pm for lunch, and from 11am to 5:30pm for drinks and snacks (don't hesitate to come and try our homemade chocolate or chestnut cream crêpes - some say they're worth the detour). Located in the Borgne Valley, in the commune of Les Plantiers, our Fontfouillouse gîte welcomes you to an unspoilt valley at the foot of a 12th-century Romanesque church. In the midst of the Cévennes chestnut grove, we have created our group gîte. Our accommodation comprises a large living room/kitchen with direct access to the outside, and sleeping areas for up to 15 people. Ideally located, we open our house for a stopover on a hike or a longer stay, a weekend with family or friends. We look forward to welcoming you. Le Petit Baigneur offers you a return to your roots in a calm, family and simple environment, on the banks of the river Gardon. Enjoy moments of relaxation on the large and shaded pitches. The campsite allows you to benefit from all the necessary comfort to spend a pleasant stay, simple, friendly and warm. With its traditional tractor ride in summer for the children, the family atmosphere and the good mood of the place make it a tasty and memorable moment! The swimming will delight young and old with its direct access to the river which is quite hot in summer! Le Petit Baigneur welcomes you in tent, caravan and camper, but with your own equipment. There are no mobile homes or chalets available for rent. This comfortable, functional and friendly gîte is remarkably well suited to the needs of hikers in the new millennium. The preservation of the old buildings has created a warm and welcoming atmosphere, while respecting the architectural authenticity and rich history of the area. Lime rendering and the use of chestnut wood blend perfectly with the original stone. The garden offers a variety of relaxation areas for a well-deserved rest. Situated on the edge of the GR70 and very close to the GR61, 'Le Pré de Modestine' is the ideal place to enjoy the end of Stevenson's route, or to organize hikes to discover the Cévennes. The gîte is located 1 km upstream from Saint Jean du Gard.

Bivouac nature is a camp of eco-lodges tents to spend a pleasant stay in the heart of nature. It is also possible to rent a Bivouac pitch to pitch your own tent without electricity. For 4 generations now, this family campsite welcomes you in the heart of the Cevennes between Anduze and Saint Jean du Gard, in the Mialet valley. It is located along the river and has its own private beach. The establishment located at the edge of the Cevennes National Park offers a wide range of activities for the whole family. It has a direct access to the river with a private beach, an aquatic complex of more than 600m² with a swimming pool of 250 m², a heated swimming pool with 4 slides including a kamikaze, an aqualudic space of 250 m² for the youngest with many water games and a new slide with sensation, the Tobbo-jump of 11m high. As for other activities, you will find a multi-sports field, an 18-hole mini golf course, a fitness area, a bowling alley with 12 courts, a games library and a children's playground accessible from the opening of the campsite.
