"Le Guilhaumard", it’s a karst plateau like no other, a Larzacian islet on the edge of the department of Hérault. Its specific geology and climate make it an eden for botanists. A real discovery!1 - From the walkers’ car park, cross the track and take in front a rocky path, then, a path that, further, goes down to the farm of les Aires. Take it on left on 200m.2- Before the farm, turn right on the trail and go down to Sorgues.The Sorgues resurgence is just before the hamlet on the left (go and back).3 – Cross the hamlet and continue on the road on 2,5km. Turn left to La Mouline, pass over the Sorgues and then continue towards Saint-Rome-de-Berlières, on 800m.4 - Turn on the left hairpin road, ford the stream and continue on the dirt track. Turn left on a path in the middle of boxwood and juniper, then follow the shaded path which climbs and arrives on the plateau at the “Pas de Tirecul”.5 – On the plateau, (you can observe in spring and in the beginning of summer a lot of orchids), turn left and walk along the edge of the plateau  walking on tracks or old “caussenard” paths to join the Mas Raynal.6 – Take the road in direction of Cabanes. Before the hamlet, turn right on the track and follow it on 500m to reach the car park.

A trip outside La Couvertoirade, in an agropastoral landscape: ideal for understanding the daily life of inhabitants of this fortified village at the time of Templars and Hospitallers.Through the parking, you have to get the ramparts of the village at the north gate and go through the village on the left to join the church.You can leave the village by the small door of access located between the church and the castle. Walking up and down till Moulin de Redounel, you have to take down on the way back to the left along the ramparts to lavogne.Follow the road in left approximately for 250 m and to pass beyond a disused barn. To veer right on the track that rises smoothly on the tray. After a wide turn, it turns towards south and reaches 1 km, at a fork.To leave GR de Pays to go down in right through the pasture of 100 m, then to appear on a dirt track. To follow it towards west for 900 m and reach an intersection with the GR 71.To turn right on the stony path. Being narrow, it then widens and passes through a small oak wood. You have to go through the Boussière, then in a small meadow and continue through the hollow road that leads to the foot of the wall, facing the south gate.To enter the village through the south door and to the car park via the north door.

Turn left and join the small road to La Salvetat at a bend. Turn left and go down to the underpass. Go under the motorway and turn left on the old Roman road to a grove.Turn left, go down to the motorway fence, follow it to the left, take the underground passage, cross the D185 and take in front a path lined with low walls and boxwoods which leads back to La Couvertoirade.

This path will take you to the edge of the cliff, following the curves of the relief. As you walk through the boxwood moorland or in the shade of the oak trees, the emptiness will appear like a rising curtain. This magnificent tour immerses you in the heart of the remarkable Cirque de Navacelles and its founding river, the Vis. An initial detour takes in the Causse de Blandas and the pleasant Bois de Fontaret, but as soon as you pass the Calo Rouge clearing, you're plunged into the mineral world of the famous canyon, all the way to the unusual resurgence of La Foux and its assortment of recently renovated ancestral mills. All that's left to do is follow the right bank of the winding Vis, and let yourself flow to the charming hamlet of Navacelles. But as soon as you've crossed the picturesque Romanesque bridge, you have to tackle the old road cut into the stone to climb back up to the plateau. The final slopes are formidable!

A short circuit that can be used as an introduction to trail running and to the Causse de Blandas and Cirque de Navacelles. The route first rises above the village and soon reaches the edge of the Bois de Fontaret, which it crosses on pleasant paths under the conifers.

This getaway which is devoted to historical heritage, follows several trails and a path that is cut into the rock and leads you on the borderline of the Rougier de Camarès, an amazing patchwork of red ochre soils.From the village centre of Sylvanès take a small road (between the Town Hall and the restaurant) that leads to Maxels.In the hamlet, take the left path and ford the brook twice, walk the ascending path up to a trail intersection.Once you have ford across the brook again, take the left trail and walk around the Bataille farm to the right, the trail continues to rise. Walk across the Moulin and go for approximately 600 m up a small road.Before the hamlet of Douzou, take right a track, then at the junction of 4 trails take the one opposite which leads to the Besc hillside catchment reservoir. After the reservoir, take the left trail that gradually rises. Follow this main trail up to a hairpin bend on the right side.100 m after the hairpin bend, take to the left a recently completed pathway (be careful not to miss the trailhead). The path rises zigzagging through the woodland, crosses a 1st trail and joins a 2nd one which is to be followed on the left.Approximately 200 m after this intersection, leave the ascending path to the right and follow the contour line. The hike has already provided magnificent views over the Rougier and far in the distance, offered a first vision of the Montaigut castle. Keep walking up to a field, the logging road runs down to the left and goes along a 2nd field.You soon leave this path to take a track (cairn) which starts to the right of the field. This track crosses a trail and reaches the abandoned farmhouse of Gaujoux. After the farm, go ahead along the track that turns into a path and follows the contour line towards the Montaigut castle. Keep walking on the main path overlooking the Rougier. This path that crosses the Aigue Lebade ravine has been often hewn out of the rock.  The path goes along the plaster mill before reaching the Montaigut castle

The pubescent oak (Quercus pubescens) is widespread in the areas of the south of France. Its leaves are hairy on their underside, which is an adaptation to drought (the hairs limit evaporation and retain moisture). The site is just incredible. The Vis gushes down from the cliffs with impressive force. You can visit the old mills at your leisure, and admire the waterfalls from different angles as you scramble over the rocks. The further we descend, the more the vegetation changes and we appreciate the freshness of the cedars of Lebanon. As we approach the river, the freshness intensifies, the trees are more vigorous and there are even ferns. Suddenly, with a roar, the screw emerges from the bowels of the mountain. The abundant flow kept the mills, destroyed several times by flooding and then rebuilt, in operation until the early 20th century. It is said that in 1870, the millers had to take refuge on the roofs. An umpteenth flood in 1907 led to the definitive abandonment of the mills, until their restoration in 2000 as part of the Opération Grand Site du Cirque de Navacelles.

In the arid Causses of Larzac to the north and Blandas to the south, the river Vis has carved out an impressive green furrow, dominated at its heart by a hill. This is the Cirque de Navacelles, a geological curiosity shaped by 600,000 years of patient labor. Straddling the departments of Gard and Hérault, the Vis river has carved out its bed in the limestone of the southern causses (Blandas and Larzac), forming vast meanders. Over time, erosion of the rock has enabled the river to cut its course as short as possible, abandoning its former bed. Thus was born the Cirque de Navacelles. To discover it in its entirety, don't miss the 300m-deep descent to the bottom of the cirque. Here, in a green oasis on the banks of the Vis waterfall, lies the village of Navacelles. A botanical trail, accessible to all, has been laid out here. Today, the cirque de Navacelles is a member of the Grands Sites de France, and boasts over 250,000 visitors a year. Since 2011, it has been nestled in the heart of a UNESCO World Heritage Site (Causse & Cévennes). The heritage of the Cirque de Navacelles Grand Site The joint work of man and nature, the former has used all its power to sculpt the material and shape the site's geological outlines, while the latter has patiently created the "finishing touches": built islands, roads, bridges and paths, low walls supporting the terraces, all at the cost of laborious work to shape the relief. The Cirque de Navacelles Grand Site boasts a magnificent heritage of archaeology, geomorphology and agropastoralism. Hiking and outdoor activities The Grand Site du Cirque de Navacelles is a territory where nature and heritage reveal themselves to those who take the time to observe, listen and smell... Free walks are a wonderful way to discover the fauna and flora, as well as the heritage: lavognes, pastoral enclosures, old bread ovens... THE BELVEDERES OF BLANDAS Situated just 3 minutes from the village of Blandas, the belvederes offer three breathtaking viewpoints over the Cirque de Navacelles and the Vis gorges. The Maison de Site houses a tourist documentation area, a permanent exhibition on agropastoralism, a film showing archaeological discoveries made on the Causse and in the Cirque de Navacelles, a local produce store and a restaurant serving local produce. The facilities are accessible to the disabled. Since July 2013, the "Chênes", "Doline" and "Cascade" lookouts on the Causse de Blandas offer visitors an overview of the grandiose geomorphology of the Cirque de Navacelles and establish a respectful dialogue between Man and Earth. The lavogne and the tank have a dual function, vital to the plateau. The lavogne is a pond developed on the clay funds, impervious to water. It is often paved with stones to prevent gully erosion that cause trampling of sheep flocs came to drink it. The cistern collects rainwater and stores. The first notes about windmills appear in England and France at the end of the 12th century. They were much developed in the early 13th century and stopped turning at the end of the 19th century without any exception. In La Couvertoirade, there were two windmills, one disappeared but was mentioned in the 17th century in a place called “the Cross of wind”, the other still dominates the city at Redounel. “Le Moulin de Redounel”: altitude: 808 m, outer diameter: 5.56 m, height 6.60 m, thickness of walls: 1.08 m. It is made up of one of the only remains of windmills in South Aveyron, among the 60 windmills known in Aveyron. The Templar castle was built in the late twelfth century on the rocky outcrop of the village. Until the construction of the walls in the fifteenth century, its mission was to protect the villagers in case of attack, evidenced by its barbican, this primitive enclosure, as well as the remains of a gatehouse, located above the front door. The present church has replaced the old parish church of the 11th century, situated outside the village. This new building, partly carved into the rock in the 14th century will attend the final constitution of a village.During construction of the walls in the 15th century, the church flat chevet will be a complete portion of the wall. This oven owes its name to the tax people had to pay for using it: this tax was called “la banalité”. Built in the 15th century by the Hospitallers and restored in 2000s. Today, it works and batches are regularly made by the village baker.

La Couvertoirade preserves all its walls, built in the mid-fifteenth century. As early as 1346, robbers called "routiers" plunder the Larzac. Because of fear of the armed gangs, villagers were asking in 1439 the permission to fortify the village.
