In a former meander of the river Seine, this walk offers stunning panoramic views over the Marais-Vernier and its Grand Mare, a large natural lake listed national hunting reserve. You will also be able to see thatched cottages and a beautiful Renaissance dovecote along the way. To walk back up, the slope is steep but the walk and views are worth the effort!

This route pays tribute to one of the most characteristic features of the Norman landscape: the bocage and its pollarded trees. Present throughout the walk, they form both the soul of the landscape and the guiding thread of the route. Sunken lanes make up nearly a third of the trail, often enclosed between two embankments lined with ancient hedgerows of hornbeam, ash and oak pollards, creating striking green tunnels. In the more open sections, a pollarded hedgerow frequently borders one side of the path, offering a discreet reminder of this bocage landscape shaped by generations of Norman farmers. The starting point provides an elegant introduction to the walk. A rustic stone gateway marks the entrance to a half-timbered manor house, accompanied by a magnificent cedar tree and thatched outbuildings, forming a remarkably harmonious architectural and natural ensemble. Halfway along the route, the Croisée Educational Pond invites visitors to take a nature break. Designed to encourage observation and understanding of aquatic life, it is accessible to all ages and audiences. Between rolling bocage countryside, open farmland and quiet woodland, this walk beautifully reveals the deep identity of a region located close to the Seine Valley.

Beginning at the church square in Saint-Mards-de-Blacarville, this route offers a remarkable variety of landscapes. Open farmland, sunken bocage lanes winding through the valleys, riverside paths along the Risle, and stretches of deciduous woodland featuring oak, beech, birch and chestnut trees follow one another throughout the walk. The former towpath runs alongside the Risle for three kilometres—almost a third of the route—before crossing the peaceful outskirts on the right bank of Pont-Audemer and passing the former cardboard factory, currently undergoing redevelopment. The area boasts a rich architectural heritage. The Roman Tower is an attractive manor house created within the bell tower of the former church of Saint-Mards, a reminder of the merger between the parishes of Blacarville and Saint-Mards. The Ferme de la Lorie stands out with its crenellated stone gateway and dovecote. The Church of Blacarville, rebuilt in flint during the 15th century, still preserves its herringbone-pattern foundations and its 13th-century chancel. In the churchyard, a remarkable female yew tree with a hollow trunk, estimated to be between 750 and 950 years old, stands as a silent guardian of the site. A rewarding walk where nature and history meet at every turn of the path.

The starting point sets the scene: a former brick town hall, the large stables of a characterful farm, and an elegant manor house reflect a discreet yet expressive rural heritage. The municipality itself was formed through the union of two former parishes: Blacarville on the plateau and Saint-Mards in the valley. The church of Saint-Mards, now converted into a manor house, still bears witness to this dual identity. The route then unfolds through landscapes of remarkable contrast. For the first half of the walk, wide agricultural plains stretch across the horizon before giving way to the sunken lanes of the Norman bocage, nestled at the bottom of the valley and along the edge of the plateau. Several sections of deciduous woodland—oak, beech, birch, and chestnut trees—bring shade and tranquillity to the walk. The return via the Church of Blacarville is a particular highlight. Rebuilt in the 15th century using flint, it still preserves Romanesque features, including its herringbone-pattern foundations and its 13th-century chancel. Over the centuries, arched stone openings and square brick windows were added, enriching its architectural character. In the adjoining churchyard stands a remarkable female yew tree, with a hollow trunk and an estimated age of between 750 and 950 years. A route where history and nature meet, offering a simple yet striking experience.

Along the river Seine, the Chemin des Sources Bleues (Blue Streams Trail) links two typical villages of the Thatched Cottage Trail: Aizier and Vieux-Port. A prehistoric site, two churches, numerous thatched cottages and the ruins of St Thomas' Chapel, etc.: the local heritage is as significant as the views over the Seine valley are stunning. Comprising many hills, this walking trail mostly runs in the shade of the woods, but also follows some parts of the holloways of the hedgerow country.

Starting from Bouquelon, this route crosses one of Normandy’s most distinctive landscapes: the Marais Vernier, a Ramsar-designated wetland renowned for its exceptional ecological richness and considered unique in France. A vast mosaic of wet meadows, marshes and reed beds stretches as far as the eye can see, framed by densely wooded hills that form a natural amphitheatre. The trail runs alongside one of France’s largest peat bogs, where the courtils—long, narrow plots bordered by ditches and trees—create a landscape unlike any other. Traditional thatched farms dot the countryside, reflecting generations of inhabitants who learned to live in harmony with water and wetlands. Bouquelon is also home to a remarkable architectural heritage. The Château du Plessis Estate, listed as a Historic Monument, stands out for its richness and diversity. It includes a manor house, a dovecote, woodlands and the Saint-Eustache Chapel, which houses paintings by Symon Gredovin dating from 1608. A Neo-Gothic funerary chapel designed by architect Jacques-Eugène Barthélémy was added in 1844. The Saint-Ouen Church, also listed as a Historic Monument, completes this heritage ensemble. Built in the 11th century under the patronage of the Lord of Roys, it still preserves its original western portal and a medieval window, discreet witnesses to more than nine centuries of history. A route where exceptional nature and remarkable heritage combine to reveal the unique character of the Marais Vernier.

After enjoying a beautiful view over the Marais Vernier from the picnic tables located next to the town hall, this varied trail takes you through open countryside and woodland, with a section of bocage lined with beautiful pollarded hornbeams. Along the way, you will also see several traditional buildings and a manor house.

This route offers a remarkable diversity of landscapes. Open farmland gives way to sunken bocage lanes before leading into rolling woodland. Throughout the walk, many impressive trees deserve attention, including pollarded ash trees lining the hedgerows and majestic beeches and oaks rising above the forest floor. Nature also reveals an unexpected curiosity: a storm gully, a true Norman wadi, which remains dry for most of the year before turning into a powerful torrent during periods of heavy rainfall. Best avoided immediately after storms, it remains a fascinating feature in every season. The walk begins beside the village church, surrounded by elegant manor houses built of brick or half-timbering, reflecting the quality of the local architectural heritage. Close to the route stands the Bonnebos Chapel, dating from the late 17th century and listed as a Historic Monument. It houses the Departmental Museum of Resistance and Deportation. Its adjoining dovecote, the last surviving element of a once-important manor estate, conveys a sense of quiet dignity and emotion. Combining landscapes, nature and remembrance, this walk leaves a lasting impression.

This route invites walkers on a journey between two riverbanks and two worlds: town and countryside, urban heritage and the discreet natural beauty of the Norman valleys. Starting in the historic centre of Pont-Audemer, visitors are immediately immersed in the atmosphere of a remarkably preserved medieval town. Canals, half-timbered houses, winding streets and the impressive Saint-Ouen Church create a setting of exceptional charm and harmony. The tourist office offers guided tours as well as summer evening tours, providing a memorable way to discover the town. The Canel Museum, open throughout the year, is the perfect complement to this exploration of local history. Leaving the town behind, the trail follows the curves of the landscape towards Corneville-sur-Risle and its famous Inn of the Bells, whose celebrated carillon has been ringing since the 19th century. Nature then takes centre stage with the Lillebec Washhouse, its springs and small watercourses crossed by footbridges, before the route reaches Manneville-sur-Risle. Here, the Bonnebos Chapel houses a moving Museum of Resistance. A generous walk where living history and the gentle charm of Normandy meet along the way.

The Grand'Mare observatory (the only natural pond in Haute Normandie), owned by the Fédération des Chasseurs de l'Eure, overlooks the pond of the same name. This pond is in fact a vast hunting and wildlife reserve where ducks and wild geese come to recharge their batteries during migration. From this freely accessible observatory, you can watch migratory birds during the migration season, as well as sedentary birds throughout the year. But beyond this immense spectacle that stretches as far as the eye can see, you need to appreciate the multitude of soothing sensations that emanate from it, its smells, its fresh air, and stay on the lookout for noises piercing the silence.

The Marais Vernier forms a 5,000-hectare gulf of plains, cut into the Roumois plateau between Quillebeuf-sur-Seine and Pointe de la Roque. A vast amphitheater formed by an ancient meander of the Seine, the Marais Vernier is a highly distinctive landscape. Settlement is confined to the foot of the cliffs, without invading the wetlands, which are criss-crossed by innumerable canals and ditches leading to the region?s only natural pond, the Grand Mare. The shape of the "courtils", very narrow plots of marsh meadow, and pollard alignments give this area great charm.

Vieux-Port is a quaint village located on the banks of the river Seine with numerous houses that have kept their thatched roof planted with irises. Stop there to discover the history and heritage of this former Roman port which has now become popular among tourists. So follow the heritage trail "Portus Tutus" for a short walk around the village. And enjoy amazing panoramic views over the river Seine.

In one of the meanders of the river Seine, in Normandy, along the Thatched Cottage Trail, the archaeological site of Saint Thomas's Chapel is a former 12th century leprosarium that accommodated people with leprosy from 1180 and for 350 years. The trail invites you to understand and experience how it felt to suffer from leprosy in the Middle Ages. From 1998 to 2010, the ruins of the leprosarium revealed their secrets during the excavation works carried out every summer.

Welcome to the heart of the Boucles de la Seine Normande Regional Natural Park. Along the 53-km long (33 miles) Thatched Cottage Trail, Aizier, a small village overlooking the river Seine, is one of the gems to explore. On foot or by bike, go by the small 11th century Romanesque Church that comprises one of the rare bell towers covered with local stone. Keep going down to the banks of the river Seine. Or go and explore Saint Thomas' Chapel and its information panels about life in a leprosarium during the Middle Ages. People still come to Saint Thomas' Chapel to tie a knot in a branch of a tree and make a wish.

Listed a Historic Monument, the Château d’Etelan was built at the end of the 15th century, from 1494, which makes it the first Italian Renaissance chateau built in France. The Château d’Etelan is located in the heart of the Pays de Caux and Seine Valley between the bridges of Brotonne and Tancarville, and it overlooks the last big meander of the river Seine. A place where Francis I of France, Catherine de’ Medici, and even Voltaire and Gustave Eiffel stopped, the Château d’Etelan comprises a chapel dedicated to Sainte Madeleine dating back to the Early Norman Renaissance, which Abbot Cochet compared to those of the chateaux of Blois, Chenonceau and Amboise. Its park is a unique place where the environment hasn't changed over the centuries and is designed to walk around or admire the site.
