The village of Butz was united with that of Balaives by royal decree of King Charles X on 25 May 1828. The nave and choir of Saint-Loup church in Butz appear to date back to the Middle Ages. In 1633 (date inscribed on the exterior lintel of the south chapel), the two chapels were built as an apse between the choir and the nave. The western portal was altered in the 18th century and the nave in the 19th century (possibly in 1869, as the archives mention repairs at this date), particularly to the windows. The building has an elongated plan. The entire building is built of rubble stone, except for the bays and the western portal, which are built of large stones. Etablissements Vynex is located on the site of an 18th-century fulling mill with a water wheel. The names DROXLER Fernand, POTIER Auguste, HAUTDECOEUR Auguste, DAPREMONT Emile and PONCELET Léon are written in black and white, and this work honours them. A signature and the place of execution are also inscribed at the bottom of the work.

Notre-Dame church is the former church of the Cistercian abbey of Élan, founded in 1148 by Witier, Count of Rethel, where several members of his family, including Hugues (died 1229) and Philippe de Bourgogne (died 1415), were buried.
