Balaives is mentioned in 1207 in a charter from Hugues, Count of Rethel, and its church, in a pouillé dated 1306, as being a relief church for the parish of Etrepigny; this situation lasted until 1871 when it became a branch church. A commemorative plaque at the entrance to the nave states that Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens church was built in 1888 thanks to donations from the Borderel couple, the lords of the Château de Sault opposite. They also donated the presbytery and the village school, and their family provided the church with some of its furnishings. The old church was located in the middle of the cemetery, a few metres to the north-east, and its materials were sold in 1889.
