Start from the GR531 at the back of the Match supermarket. Take the lane that crosses the Seltzbach stream to the Protestant church in Soultz-sous-Forêts. Continue along Rue des Echevins past the post office. Continue along rue du Château and join rue des Barons de Fleckenstein, continuing as far as the crossroads. At the crossroads, continue along the opposite street, rue Frohnacker, until you reach the next roundabout. At the roundabout, take the first turning on the right and go under the small road bridge. Continue straight ahead until you reach Rue de Seltz. When you reach rue de Seltz, turn left and head towards Hohwiller, staying on the cycle path and watching out for bicycles. Go through Hohwiller and turn right into rue de Betschdorf, then into Betschdorf. Enter Betschdorf via Rue des Francs. Pass through the potters' village and take the opportunity to visit the Pottery Museum and the village's potters. Join the Rue Vieille Rue and then, on leaving Betschdorf, turn right and take the green cycle route as far as Surbourg, taking care to watch out for bicycles. Once in Surbourg, leave the greenway and turn right into rue du Général de Gaulle, then left into rue Arbogast and rue des Ecoles, in front of the church of Saint-Martin-et-Saint-Arbogast. Continue along rue du Docteur Deutsch to Soultz-sous-Forêts via the way of Saint-James. Return to the railway station and then to the official start of the GR531.

Set off to explore the Outre-Forêt region between the villages of Surbourg and Kutzenhausen, passing through Soultz-sous-Forêts. The route is dotted with remarkable sites such as the Abbey Church of Saint-Arbogast in Surbourg, the Maison Rurale de l'Outre-Forêt in Kutzenhausen and the historical heritage of the town of Soultz-sous-Forêts.

Discover the riches of the Outre-Forêt region on this undulating route through the countryside. After discovering the heritage of Soultz-sous-Forêts, you'll continue on to Hunspach, voted France's favourite village in 2020, Seebach and Hoffen. These white villages with their typical Alsatian architecture will win you over!

Starting from Soultz-sous-Forêts station, follow the GR531 towards the Treetop Walk Alsace and the walking path of Compostelle on the way back to Soultz-sous-Forêts. A varied route through villages, valleys in the foothills of the Northern Vosges and forest. In high season, don't miss a visit to the Treetop Walk Alsace, with its panoramic views over the whole of Alsace Verte ! From the station, head for the match supermarket for the first stage of the tour and the official start of the GR531. An interactive terminal and a service area for motor caravans are located at the start of the GR531 at the back of the supermarket car park. Follow the blue rectangle of the GR531 and pass through the villages of Retschwiller, Memmelshoffen and Drachenbronn via the Auberge des Sept Fontaines to reach the Chemin des Cimes Alsace car park. You can visit the Chemin des Cimes Alsace and the Forêt d'Aventure Alsace adventure park. For the return journey, take the yellow-marked trail and pass through the village of Birlenbach. After leaving Birlenbach, head east following the yellow diamond, then at the next crossroads, turn right and head towards Soultz-sous-Forêts following the green horse, which corresponds to the Way of St James.

Starting from the GR531 long-distance hiking trail at the back of the Match supermarket, with interactive signposting. Join the lane that crosses the Seltzbach stream to reach the Protestant church in Soultz-sous-Forêts. Continue along rue des Echevins past the post office. Turn left into rue des Barons de Fleckenstein and then into rue de Lobsann, following the blue dot. After leaving Soultz-sous-Forêts, continue along the path marked with the blue dot in the direction of Kutzenhausen. In the forest about 1200 metres after leaving Soultz-sous-Forêts and at the crossroads, take the path marked with the blue and white disc and continue to the village of Kutzenhausen. In the village, enjoy a visit to the Maison Rurale de l'Outre-Forêt, an interpretation centre for the local heritage. Continue back towards Soultz-sous-Forêts via the route de Soultz. Around 70 metres after the bend, turn left into the lane and continue across the fields to the entrance to Soultz-sous-Forêts via rue Mauerfeld and then rue des Barons de Fleckenstein to the official start of the GR531.

A walking trail from Soultz-sous-Forêts railway station to the Fort of Schoenenbourg, a key site on the Maginot Line. A walk through town, nature and historical heritage. From the station, follow the signs for the supermarket Match and join the official start of the GR531 trail at the back of the car park. Interactive terminal and motorhome service area on site at the start of the GR531. Continue towards Retschwiller and then the Fort of Schoenenbourg . A fascinating visit to the Fort on the theme of the Maginot Line is a must. Return to the village of Schoenenbourg then Hermerswiller.

A few kilometres further on, the route will take you to the only church in Alsace built entirely of timber-framed construction in Kuhlendorf.

From Soultz-sous-Forêts railway station, walk to the official start of the walking path the GR531, located behind the Match supermarket. You can retrace your steps back to the starting point in Soultz-sous-Forêts or walk towards Betschdorf or Hunspach.

After the cruise, you’ll head to a small tavern to taste some local wine. The ruins of Grand Arnsbourg, a castle dating back to the middle of the 12th century, are between Philippsbourg and Niederbronn. The castle was built to survey the Zinsel valley leading to Bitche. Louis d'Arnsbourg was the first occupant in 1229; from 1332, it was in the hands of the Lords of Lichtenberg until the last descendant died in 1481. The Count of Deux-Pont-Bitche became proprietor until the castle was partially destroyed during the Peasant War. For security reason access is strictly forbidden. Access: Forestry car park on the D87. Follow the red rectangles up to the path which lead you to the ruin in approximately 30 minutes

The Falkenstein castle is the most important castle in Pays de Bitche. It was built in th 12th century under the Count of Lutzelbourg's orders to protect the Holy forest of Haguenau. In 1564, the last Lord of Falkenstein sold the castle to Philip IV of Hanau Lichtenberg. The structure was in flames for 5 days and nights. Several buildings were rebuilt rather hastily but were finally dismantled by the French in 1680. The ruins that remain today crown a large sandstone rock, 117m in length, 2 to 10m wide and 22m high. Once inside the arched entrance, the shape of a head of a falcon can be distinguished in the overhang of rock - Falken: falcon, Stein: rock. On the same ridge, to the side of the Falkenstein, is Helfenstein castle, "the rock that brings help". In 1410, this castle was built with the money from the villagers in Butten, Kirspach and Birsbach, the Duke of Lorraine's fieifs. It was destroyed in 1435. The Rothenburg Castle is several hundred metres from the Falkenstein but has only a few visual remains. Its origins are unknown. The castle is cited in 1353 as belonging to the Count of Bitche. several years later, it became a hideout for highwaymen and was eventually destroyed by the Strasbourg militia. In the 16th century, it is sited as a small old ruined castle. Access: By the forestry road, a small steep path will take you up to the ruins.

Lieschbach Lake at Philippsbourg is a small peaceful peat mire and lake. On the outskirts of the villages, the 2km walk around the lake offers an exceptional panoramic of the forest and the rock outcrops. Thanks to a small wooden jetty, you can have a close up view of the wide variety of dragonflies that nest here. This lake is a nature reserve and is thus protected. Swimming and canoeing is strictly forbidden. You can reach the lake via the Hanau Lake following the path with the blue cross leading to the Falkenstein castle (35min). By car: coming from Haguenau towards Bitche, turn right after Philippsbourg into the small hamlet called Lieschbach. After 200m, turn right onto a track, continue 100m and there is a small forest car park on your right. Continue on foot to the lake (10min) Coming from Bitche: follow Haguenau and before entering Philippsbourg turn left into the hamlet of Lieschbach.

A few kilometres from Bitche, the small village of Sturzelbronn is home to an old Cistercian abbey founded in the 12th century. Destroyed in the French Revolution, only a few vestiges remain: The statue of St Bernard de Clairvaux, founder of the abbey: erected in 1935 at the 800th anniversary of the commeration for the founding of the Cistercian abbey in 1135. The great gates put in place during the 18th century after the 30 year war, a symbol of the power that the abbey possessed. The lapidary calendar: one of the more rare and interesting remains of the abbey. Unique in France, this ingenious calendar with its double entry table allows you to calculate the time in weeks and in days that separate Christmas from the 1st Sunday of Lent. It is sealed in the inner entrance of the church. The tympanum from the old abbey church reflecting the sobriety of the Cistercian artistry. Other things to see: the pillory reflecting the right to justice served by the monks, a sandstone sarcophgi and the cellar cave.

The Erbsenfels Rock is one of the most beautiful natural curiosities in Pays de Bitche. This magnificent red sandstone rock is also known as the Arch Rock because of its shape formed by the erosion. The rock has a gaping hole which filters the sun leaving exceptional lighte effects amidst the vegetation. Situated along the GR532 (long distance footpath), the Erbsenfels is admired by all. This site can be discovered on foot, by bike or on horseback. Access: From Hanau Lake: follow the 6km circular walk From Waldeck Lake: follow the GR532 Note: This natural site is fragile so is pprotected. climbing is forbidden a s well as walking on the top. The raven and the peregrine falcon nest on this site between March and th end of July. During this period, we ask you to respect their tranquility and not disturb them.

The little chapel of Notre Dame des Bois is one of the hidden treasures of Pays de Bitche. Next to the Erbsenweiher Lake, the altar of this sandstone chapel is lined with a stone tabernacle contained in an iron box. It has a crucifix and four candlesticks. During the last war, the roof of the chapel was damaged and the pews, chandeliers, objects of worship and the statue of the Virgin have since disappeared. The wall inside were covered with inscrptions: the soldiers on the Maginot line had engraved their names and the chapel had even been used as a stable for their horses. During th renovation in 1974, a new statue of the Virgin was blessed and the small bell that had been found was repaired.

Built at the end of the 13th century by the lords of Falkenstein under the bishop of Strasbourg's orders, the Ramstein castle was built to control he access through the Zinsel valley. But during the 14th century, the Lords of ramstein transformed the castle into a den of thieves, robbing and exorting the whole region. Faced with this delicate situation, troops from Strasbourg helped by their allies from Berne organised a punitive expedition against the fortress. With war machines and stone boulders, the Ramstein was entirely destroyed un 1335.

The old site of Erbsenthal is half way between Sturzelbronn and Eguelshardt, more precisely in the wooded hills of Biesenberg (376m), Abstberg (375m), Erbsenberg (402m) and Rothenberg (358m). In the stream flow of the Rothenbach, and flowing through the Moosbach and Atlzinsel, the site covers over 3km and 33 hectares. The left bank (24,5ha) of the river is owned by the Commune of Sturzelbronn and the right bank (9ha) is the property of Eguelshardt. The lake is admired by all who have the opportunity to see it. The GR532 and the Tres Tabernae pass by the banks as well as several circular trails way-marked by the Club Vosgien staring from the Hanau Lake. The Chapel “Notre Dame des Bois” is 2 minutes away on foot. The Cistercians monks from Sturzelbronn took ice from this lake in winter and stocked it in a “glacier”, a type of igloo insulated with straw – an ancient method that was often used in this area. The ice could be used up until summer, either for direct consumption or for preserving their food, especially fish, as the lakes were full.
