The GR® de Pays Beaujolais-Bugey par la Dombes links the hills of the Lyonnais to the south of Bugey. It winds its way through the vineyards of Beaujolais, along the towpath of the Saône and through the Dombes region of lakes. The GR® de Pays Beaujolais-Bugey par la Dombes starts from the GR®76 near the village of Sainte-Paule (Rhône) and crosses several lines of hills before joining the Saône. It crosses the Saône to enter the Ain between Anse and St-Bernard. From here, it follows the towpath to Parcieux. It then crosses the Dombes plateau and its ponds. It crosses the Ain at the Chazey bridge, and after skirting the Rhône, climbs up to join the GR®59 in the Bugey mountains.

Carp, char, trout, eel, tuna, swordfish... are all salted before being placed in the smokehouse. Drying and smoking alternate for fifteen hours. High-quality smoke is produced by the friction of beech and oak logs on a grindstone. The fish are then matured in cold storage before being boned (by hand), sliced and packaged. In 2016, Le Fumet des Dombes acquired a kitchen workshop to offer cooked products, with a view to diversifying while continuing to promote regional products. The presence of a river toll and the town's geopolitical location meant a stone fortress had to be built in the late 13th century. Saint Jean-Marie Vianney the patron saint of priests was parish priest of Ars-sur-Formans from 1818 until 1859. Today his shrine is located in the village and it welcomes nearly 500,000 pilgrims and tourists annually. The village of Ars-sur-Formans is a place of pilgrimage and religious importance and is home to the Ars Basilica which was designed by Pierre Bossan and built during the late 19th century. The basilica was constructed using both red brick and stone on the site of the old village church. It houses the shrine of Saint Jean-Marie Vianney whose body in entombed there. The Chapelle du Cœur which was constructed in 1930 also houses relics of the saint. Built in the 1950’s to commemorate his 100th anniversary, the church of Notre Dame de la Miséricorde which is partially underground was constructed. In the centre of Ars-sur-Formans there is also a delightful monument dedicated to the memory of Saint Jean-Marie Vianney.

Walk, cycle or fish all year round in the shade of age-old trees in the 16ha grounds surrounding Cibeins agriculture school. Cibeins agriculture school now trains 450 students. It was founded in 1918 by the Mayor of Lyon, Edouard Herriot, as a rural agriculture college. Owned by the Rhône - Alpes region, the agricultural estate alone now belongs to the city of Lyon.

On this site in the heart of the Dombes region, walkers can discover the diversity of the Dombes landscape: the estate includes several ponds and associated wetlands, as well as wooded and agricultural areas. An observatory enables walkers to discover the birds associated with this type of environment. Also, throughout the year, guided tours are organized by Dombes tourisme. Covering an area of 108 hectares, the Vernange estate is home to the agrosystem typical of the Dombes region. The long-term preservation of the site's ecological and landscape wealth is essential. Built between 1606 and 1625 and preserved intact, it offers an exceptional vision of the life of the nobility of Lyon in the 17th century. The Château de Fléchères is a beautifully preserved piece of 17th century architecture. The château houses a selection of magnificent frescos by the Italian artist Pietro Ricchi that date from 1632. A visit to the château also allows you to admire the great carved fireplaces, the grand open staircase, a Louis XV panelled apartment with period furnishings and the early 17th century kitchens that are still in working order. Outside the château is surrounded by 40 hectares of lush green parkland which include the English gardens, fountains and a lake. The Château de Fléchères is open every day during July and August and there are guided tours of the château available that take about 1 hour to complete.

With a total surface area of 148.55 hectares (including 80 hectares of water), this pond is owned and managed by the Office Français de la Biodiversité (OFB). The site has an essential piscicultural vocation. It is home to a wide variety of bird species. Many ducks spend the winter here, including teal, pintail and various scaups. Hundreds of greylag geese regularly gather here. Several protected insects, such as the Swamp Copper (butterfly) and the Large-throated Leucorrhine (dragonfly), are also present. All these species can be observed from the observatory to be built in 2021. Every year, action is taken to manage the site. The ecological restoration of habitats conducive to biodiversity is also a very important issue for the site. The Etang du Grand Birieux is a sensitive site which plays an extremely important role for many species, particularly during the nesting season (spring/early summer) and overwintering period. Species that breed or overwinter here are highly sensitive to disturbance. Educational events are organized on the site.
