Bird Park

With nearly 3,000 species of birds, the Parc des Oiseaux is the largest and most important ornithological park in Europe and with over 40 years experience the bird park offers visitors a world full of fascination and discovery in a scenic setting. The Parc des Oiseaux is located just outside the town of Villars-les-Dombes about an hour’s drive from Lyon, in the heart of the Dombiste Lakes. It is home to the most impressive collection of birds from all over the world to be found anywhere. The park is not only unique because of its collection, but also because of all the various ways visitors can discover the different species. Visitors can observe the birds in 20 different carefully designed landscapes that recreate the bird’s natural habitats which allow them to be housed in an environment that they are use to. The Parc des Oiseaux’s aviaries have been also specially designed to allow visitors to get closer to the birds than ever before. The park is best known for its award winning ‘Birds in Flight Show’, the 150 birds from around 20 different species starring in this breathtaking show make it the most impressive bird show in the world. While many European presentations usually let birds of prey steal the show, the Parc des Oiseaux prefers to feature species that reflect the rich and diverse variety of birds that live in the park. Most of the birds starring in the show were born and raised by the team at the park. The show will be the highlight of your visit, as the Parc des Oiseaux pulls out all the stops to show off its magnificent birds as they were meant to be seen, in flight.

Departure is from the Tourist Office in Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne, Place du Champ de Foire.

Stage 1
Turn left from the square onto Avenue Clément Désormes, in the direction of Villars-les-Dombes.

Once you've passed the small traffic circle, you'll have a splendid view of the Clos Janin, a small park perfect for a short break in the sun before really starting the walk.

The beginning of the route passes through an urban area, so you'll need to be a little careful because of the traffic; but once you're out of town, the road becomes quieter.

From the climb (still on Avenue Clément Désormes), turn left onto Route de Grobon. This is where the route markings really begin.

Stage 2
Continue straight ahead on Route de Grobon, skirting the Prés Gaudet ponds and leaving the town.
Stay on this road until it forks.
At the fork, turn left and drive past the Gîte du Colombier.
At the next intersection, turn left (route de Chalamont), then first right, route des Moulins des Champs - La Côte.
Continue straight ahead on this road, passing Les Petites Vannières and arriving at the junction with the D27 departmental road.

Stage 3
Cross the main road and continue straight on to the next junction (Moissonnet - Etang Brouille).
Turn right and continue straight ahead at the fork.
Join the route des Gavignons and continue straight on to a place called Révérend.

Stage 4
Join the D2 departmental road, turn left, direction Villars les Dombes.
Enter Villars les Dombes and cross the railroad tracks, heading for the town center.
Take Rue du Commerce to Place de l'Hôtel de Ville, passing the church.
Immediately after the church, turn right into Place de Verdun, then left into Rue Marcel Paul Duperrier. Pass in front of the multi-purpose hall.
At the end of the street, turn left (rue de la Dombes), then left again to reach the sports stadiums.
Go through the parking lots towards the sports fields, cross the Chalaronne on a small bridge and take the dirt path on the left (sentier Pierre Poivre).

Stage 5
Follow the Pierre Poivre path to Etang Turlet (ENS).
Turn left and cross the D1083 departmental road on foot, then turn right along the road.
Continue along the Parc des Oiseaux and when the path ends, turn left to reach the Parc des Oiseaux parking lot.
