Mont Valerien : the memorial of fighting France The Mont-Valérien memorial was the main place of execution by the German army on French territory during World War II. These men, murdered because they were resistance fighters condemned to death or hostages, Jews and Communists, are all reminders of our history which naturally made this site a Mecca of national memory. After the war, the site was chosen by General de Gaulle to honor the memory of the Dead for France from 1939 to 1945; he inaugurated the memorial of fighting France there on June 18, 1960. Inside the site, the “Remembrance Trail” allows you to follow the path of those who were about to be shot: from the chapel, the walls of which still keep traces of graffiti engraved by convicts, in the clearing of the executed. The discovery of the Mont-Valérien memorial allows us to better understand what the German repression was, the French collaboration, and what was the journey of those "who loved life to death.

This park is home to the house of Father Joseph, "eminence grise" of Cardinal Richelieu. This is one of the only remains of the Richelieu area. Bought and restored by the city, this building now houses the cultural center of the Hermitage, a place for temporary exhibitions. In 1755, King Louis XV ordered the building of three identical barracks in Rueil, Courbevoie and Saint-Denis to house his regiment officially. The Franco-Swiss Museum, located in the Guynemer Barracks, a listed building, tells the story of this elite regiment. The regiment of the Swiss Guards, permanent army corps of soldiers was created in 1616 by Louis XIII. The first Swiss became integrated with the population towards 1646. They will be billeted in private houses until 1754, the date at which Luis XV to built three barracks in Rueil-Malmaison, Courbevoie and Saint-Denis. Listed monument historic, the barracks of Rueil stills exists. A out building of the museum is specially devoted to the Swiss Guards whom are settled since 1999 in one of the gate lodge of the barrack.

Church of Saint-Pierre Saint-Paul : Josephine’s final resting place Placed under the protection of Saint Pierre and Saint Paul, the church, a listed building, houses the tombs of Empress Josephine and her daughter, Queen Hortense who expressed the desire to be buried beside her mother. Josephine’s tomb, made of Carrara marble, was completed in 1825 and is decorated with a statue by Cartellier. The statue represents the Empress kneeling, recalling, as desired by her children, David’s famous painting “The Coronation of Napoleon”. One can also admire the beautiful church organ case offered by Napoleon III and signed Bacchio d’Agniolo and the beautiful bas-relief of the altar in gilded bronze designed in the 12th century by François Anguier for the Church of Val de Grace in Paris.

It now houses the city’s Museum of Local History and retraces the history and evolution of a small village in the Paris region from Charles Le Chauve to the present day. The rich history of Rueil-Malmaison is to be discovered in this museum installed in the building of the old town hall. Organized by theme, each room brings together objects evoking the past and the influence of the town. You can also admire exceptional works such as the Egyptian mummy of the Ptolemaic era, or the monumental painting by Maurice Orange, Bonaparte in Egypt contemplating the mummy of a King. The park and Château of Bois-Preau : an invitation for a stroll ! The very distinguished host of the park, the statue of Empress Josephine, invites visitors upon their arrival, to relax in a true English garden of 17 hectares. The park of Bois-Preau is home to many rare plant species and ancient trees such as the Byzantium hazel tree, the common Hornbeam, the Corsican pine and the giant sequoia. The château of Bois-Preau evokes the memory of the Emperor in Saint Helena and the return of his ashes to Paris. It was the last acquisition of Empress Josephine. The imperial home of a famous couple ! Built between 1800 and 1802 by architects Percier and Fontaine from an old 17th century house, the Château de Malmaison, acquired in 1799 by Josephine Bonaparte who was looking for a land around Paris, is a unique example for its Consular style furniture. The Château de Malmaison was occupied under the Consulate by the imperial couple. From 1800 to 1802, with the Tuileries in Paris, it was thus the seat of the French government. It was the scene of many working meetings, official and private receptions, concerts, balls, lunches and field games. Josephine had her famous rose-garden planted on the estate and she also had a Temple of Love built nearby. After her divorce in 1809, Josephine continued to live in this house, so steeped in her personality. On the first floor you can still see the room where she died on 29 May 1814.

In Marmontel avenue, the Empress Josephine built the Love Temple to decorate the park of Malmaison. This temple is a work of the architect Berthault executed in 1807 over a chaos of rocks at the edgeof the river of Malmaison. Six doric columns support an entablature surmounted by a crown adorned with a flower framed by ribbons pediment. A statue of love ready to launch his arrow was placed in the temple. This statue due to Jean Pierre Antoine Tassaert (1727-1788) is now in Malmaison Museum. Two vases of flowers decorated the entrance and rhododendrons adorning the banks, so as we can see in the famous painting of Josephine surrounded by ladies by Hector Viger.
