Vincent Van Gogh - The Seine with the bridge at the Grande Jatte - oil on canvas, 32 x 40.5 cm - Van Gogh Museum English (origin) In May 1887, Van Gogh began working on a series of 30 river scenes and landscapes along the Seine in Paris. He painted The Bridge at Courbevoie in a single session, focusing on the reflections in the water. He was less concerned with using correct perspective or with the proportions of the human figures. Van Gogh used dashes of paint in all sorts of colors,side by side and sometimes layered. This was his own free variation on Pointillism. That method was familiar to him from the work of artists such as Georges Seurat (1859-1891) and Paul Signac (1863-1935). They used mainly small dots of colour.

This is the name that Alfred Sisley gave to his painting in 1873. At the time, he likes to paint Paris and its surroundings and finds his inspiration in the landscapes as the banks of the Seine. The island of Jatte, famous place of celebration, was painted at the same time by other painters like pointillist George Seurat with his famous "" A Sunday afternoon on the Island of the Grande Jatte "".

They are also annoyed by the seriousness of his work and his scientific theories on his pictorial art. Edgar Degas, the caricature in the nicknamed "the notary". Gauguin shows him hostility and jealousy because he wants to be considered the only true innovator. His friend Paul Signac said about him: "At the time of Seurat's death, the critics did justice to his talent, but found that he left no work. On the contrary, it seems to me that he gave all he could give, and admirably. He would certainly still have produced a lot and progressed, but his task was accomplished. Impressionism has its roots in colors, lights and landscapes along the banks of the Seine. In the 19th century, the island of Jatte was one of the cradles of impressionism. With its many taverns, its proximity to the capital, the decor strongly inspired these painters.

He spent much of his childhood in Le Havre, where the Seine joins the Atlantic Ocean. Always interested in painting landscapes, the Seine brought to Monet infinite possibilities. Zurich Albert Gleizes (1881 -1953) was a founding member of the Golden Section or Puteaux Group.
