Lac d'Aydat offers a wide range of water-based activities, with a beach and water sports center. Views over the Chaîne des Puys provide a glimpse of the Auvergne landscape: lakes, volcanoes, villages, megaliths and agricultural valleys.

Lac d'Aydat is a volcanic reservoir. After circumnavigating the lake and enjoying panoramic views of the volcanoes, the path leads the walker to the pontoons above the Aydat wetland, a place rich in flora and fauna.

A very easy hike, between forest and meadow, around the Lac du Tact, ideal for birdwatching. A 23-hectare artificial lake, Lac du Tact is the result of the impoundment of a former peat bog, which explains its shallow depth (around 2 meters). Numerous animal species can be observed here, including birds (lapwing, red-winged warbler, green-winged teal, etc.), dragonflies, amphibians, crickets and European otters. A thematic trail has been laid out along the way, for birdwatching and awareness-raising. The trail features interpretation panels and an observatory for a reasoned approach to the species. Departure point: Lac du Tact parking lot. From the parking lot, walk along the road to the right towards the Tact dike. Variant : The Lac de la Crégut trail (5 km) extends the hike around the largest glacial lake in the Massif Central.

At the foot of one of the most famous volcanoes in the Chaîne des Puys, Puy de la Vache, you can observe various volcanic phenomena through vegetation, basalt quarries, ponds and magnificent views.

Go through the hamlet of Moulin-de-Lagarde, past the house and along the mill canal.In a bend in the road, take the earth path on the left.Do not go through the tunnel; go up the embankment to reach the old railway line, which you follow for 1 km.Cross the road to take an earth path. Take the next road on the right towards Monestier. Passing under the railway tunnel, the road climbs to join the D110. Turn to the right.Then take a path to the left after the last houses. The path leads to the edge of the wood. Take a path to the left in the woods, follow the tracks on the ground: beware, it’s a tricky part.Cross two stone bridges in succession. After the second one, go up the path on the left. Pass a path on the right and continue uphill. At the top of the hill, take a track opposite.Take the road to the right and reach La Vervialle opposite. Go through the hamlet to the left and return to the Sully area.

History turned upside down by a dam...Park in the village near the church. Go towards the town hall and then follow the D 159 towards Singles.As you leave the village, turn right towards Confolent below for 50 m, then the forest track on the left. At the bend in the road, turn left down the trail. Cross the road and continue on the trail. Go right at the next two crossroads; the trail overlooks the Chavanon gorge.Off the route: a 200 m return trip to the Arpiat bridge. Go up the road to the right for 600 m, and at the hairpin bend, take the forest track to the left. Follow it for 1.5 km.Be careful: the path is not very visible: leave the track for a small trail on the right that winds upwards. It joins a path that you take on the left. Follow it for some time and join the road. Turn left onto it. At the crossroads with the path that leads to the church of St-Martin, go back as far as the Chapelle de la Manants: go down; at the barricade, turn left onto a trail that leads down to the chapel. Push on to the reservoir. Go up the road (on the left, you can make a round trip to the remains of the tower and the fountain).Take the trail on the left that leads up to the church of St Martin. Continue past the church; the path passes in front of a spring and then follows the stream in the coombe: cross it and follow the markings carefully in this part because the trail is sometimes not very visible. Once you reach a clearing, cross the stream again; continue to the right: the trail continues to climb and joins a path that you take to the right to reach the village of Bourrière.As you leave the village, take the path on the left. When you get to the wood, the track becomes a path and crosses a stream. Go back up to the road.Cross it, and continue on the path opposite. Follow this road to the right to return to the starting point.

This tour takes you through the heart of the deep Gravières forest, to the "Pont du Diable" (Devil's Bridge) over the Tarentaine, which makes small jumps into water holes called "marmites". The Gravières forest covers 600 hectares. It was once used by a sawmill on the estate of the same name. The mill employed up to a hundred people before being burnt down during the Second World War. Rebuilt, it was subsequently abandoned. Departure point: Carrefour de Lavergne. Take the track on the left (approx. 20 m from the crossroads). Go down through the woods to the forest track.

This easy hiking trail takes you around the Crégut natural lake to discover the unique landscapes of the Artense region, with its forests, meadows and panoramic views of the Cantal and Sancy mountains. The Lac de la Crégut is the largest natural lake of glacial origin in the Massif Central, covering almost 37 hectares. Its depth (two pools of 16 m and 26 m) and the fact that its natural water supply is low in nutrients have prevented it from becoming a peat bog. Departure point: Lac de la Crégut parking lot. Take the road towards the hamlet of Crégut and follow the blue markings. Two variations are possible. Variant n°1: A 2.8 km path (signposted from the Lac de la Crégut parking lot) leads to the beach of Lac de Lastioulles (Pavillon Bleu) and its nautical base. Variant n°2: The Lac du Tact trail (3.3 km) extends the hike with an itinerary designed for birdwatching and awareness-raising.

In this small paradise full of plants, the path runs along the couze Pavin and climbs towards the lime of Verrières, wrapping itself around the Puy des Plattes and Bourgeassou. Continue along a steep path to Couze-Chambon, then follow it on a wide path to Verrières. At the first houses, turn right and reach the starting point.

The area encompassed by the Parc des Volcans has 4 national nature reserves: the Réserve de la Vallée de Chaudefour, the Réserve des Sagnes de la Godivelle, the Réserve du Rocher de la Jacquette and the Réserve Chastreix Sancy. Through its valleys, on the high plateaux and ridges, alongside the rivers and lakes, in the forests and through the fields, the park provides all outdoor enthusiasts with some fantastic trips along the trails, which are marked GR or PR.

The former Aydat wetland, naturally present until the 1960s-1970s, was revived in May 2012. This zone alone represents a rich and important environment for the lake's biodiversity. Its main role is to purify the waters of the Veyre thanks to the presence of suitable vegetation that limits phosphorus inputs into Lac d'Aydat. You can stroll through this area along a path of pontoons with footbridges and observatories overlooking the pond, where you can see many species of birds. The Bort-les-Orgues lake is an artificial lake of 10.72 km2 and results from the creation of the Bort-les-Orgues dam on the high course of the Dordogne. It marks the point where the river enters its gorges and is the first upstream hydroelectric development on the Dordogne.The lake is 21 km long and is shared between the departments of Corrèze, Cantal and Puy-de-Dôme. Although there is no walking tour of the lake yet, a nature-sports festival takes place every year around 14 July, the Aquaterra, which includes trail and water sports.

By blocking off valleys, it created various lakes including the Etang de la Cassière to the north and the Lac d'Aydat to the south in the Veyre valley. These 8,000 year old volcanoes are the most recently-formed of their kind in the Chaîne des Puys. Puy de la Vache rises to an altitude of 1,167 metres. Its main lava flow, together with that of the Puy de Lassolas, is known as the cheire d'Aydat. By damming the valleys, it created a number of lakes, including Lac de la Cassière to the north and Lac d'Aydat to the south in the Veyre valley. At 8,000 years old, they are the youngest volcanoes in the Chaîne des Puys. The Chaîne des Puys stretches for fifteen kilometers, reaching as far as the present-day communes of Saint-Saturnin and Saint-Amant-Tallende. The particular color of these puys, due to oxidation, ranges from red (for those left exposed to the heat of the crater) to black, resulting in surprisingly chaotic landscapes, reinforced by the presence of numerous voluminous slags left over from the eruption. Pets are welcome, provided they are kept on a leash.
