Camping La Molière: Discover Vebron, Lozère

This forest path explores the banks of the Tarnon river. From the small plateau of the Can de l’Hospitalet, you have breathtaking views onto the cliffs of the Causse Méjean. Start on the village square in Vébron. Walk on the D 907 road towards Rousses, cross the old bridge and take on your left the path that runs alongside the Tarnon. At the first crossing, turn left. Cross the wooden footbridge over the brook, then go uphill. At the crossing, continue straight ahead to Broussous. In Broussous, your track joins up with another track, onto which you turn right. At the next crossing, continue straight, ignoring the path that goes downhill on the right. Join up with the L’Hospitalet trail, onto which you turn right towards Les Vanels. At the crossing, continue downhill, ignoring the L’Hospitalet trail on your left (or else take the L’Hospitalet variant, a loop which adds 3 km in length). Then take the path on the left which goes downhill through the chestnut grove to Les Vanels. At the crossing, go straight and down (under the telephone mast). In Les Vanels, take the D 907 to the right for 750 m. Leave the road to take the path downhill on the right. Cross the river. Your return to Vébron is on the right bank of the Tarnon at the old Vébron bridge.

This path is ideal for a short summer’s walk and offers remarkable views over the Tarnon valley and the Causse Méjean… Start from the roadside of the D 9. Take the path lined by ash trees that heads west. Once you are on the heights of the Can de l’Hospitalet, take the path on the right that goes down into the Tarnon valley. NB: The path may be difficult to see. Follow this small steep path to where it crosses the Broussous trail, and turn right towards L’Hospitalet. At the next crossing, continue straight. The path becomes rather steep for a few metres. At the next crossing, turn right to return towards L’Hospitalet.

A forest and ridge walk offering beautiful views over the Tapoul gorges, the Causse Méjean, Mont Lozère and Cévennes. From the carpark, head towards Massevaques/Mont Aigoual. After the campsite, take the second track on the right (paved with concrete at first). This is the trail starting-point. At the first intersection, continue straight. Follow signs for the Col des Portes. At the Col (pass), take the left-hand track. At the next crossroads, turn right and walk to Massevaques. There, turn right and go uphill into the hamlet on the small lane, which joins up with the D 11 road. Take the road for a few metres, then fork right onto a footpath towards Le Pré de Thérond. Take the track on the right to the Col de Serre de Combe-Calde. Continue on the ridge. At the Col de Peyrerol, go downhill on the right towards Montcamp. Follow the road for 2 km, then take the first path on the right which leads uphill into the chestnut grove to reach Les Ablatats. In the hamlet, coninue on the small lane, which joins up with the road. Take a path on the left that goes downhill to the river. After the river, follow the meadow to end up on a forestry track, onto which you turn left. At the first intersection, continue straight alongside the river. At the second, go uphill on the right to get back onto your originl outbound track.

This circuit takes you from the Can (limestone plateau) through the Mimente valley and onto the disused railway track, leting you discover the landscapes of the Cévenol valleys. Mountain-bike route #8. From the Col du Rey, go downhill to and through Barre-des-Cévennes to get onto the GR72 via the four crossroads. Cycle to the Espace Stevenson. From there, take the disused railway track alongside the river Mimente towards Florac as far as  Saint-Julien-d'Arpaon (Stevenson Trail, GR70). Go uphill in the Briançon valley to Bouars and then Ferrières. Once on the Can, take the road leading to the Col du Rey for 2 km.

This circuit goes on grassy tracks and paths over the barren landscapes of the Can de Ferrières and Can de Balazuègnes plateaux, and offers panoramic views onto the Bougès massif and the Mimente valley. From the Col du Rey, head towards Ferrières. Before arriving in the hamlet, take the track on the left leading to the Can de Balazuègnes and the hamlet of the same name. Go through the hamlet and downhill to St-Julien-d'Arpaon. Turn right onto the N 106 for about 1 km, then fork right to start the climb to the Col de l'Oumenet. The track is steep at first, but then becomes smoother. At the pass, take the D 20 towards Barre des Cévennes. Turn left towards La Cure. Skirt La Cure on the left, then pass in front of Le Bouquet, Le Bramadou and Les Bastides. Cross the D 20 and, on the other side, go up a short but steep ascent (400 m). You return to the Col du Rey by skirting Balmegouse farm on the right.

This ruiniform block field (felsenmeer) on the Causse Méjean has resulted from the capricious dissolution of the dolomite limestone. It emerges suddenly, like a final panoramic viewpoint before the abyss of the gorges that delimit the Causse. From the car park, walk about 150 m through the hamlet, then turn left after the agricultural buildings.

This trail showcases the different aspects of Barre-des-Cévennes, from the lanes of the old village to the panoramic viewpoints. A few clarifications:• A few dozen metres after Point 6, take the stairs on the right.• Between Points 9 and 10, the path may be closed by two barriers. Please be sure to close them again after yourself.• Steep uphill section after Point 13.•  At Point 16, do not climb the rocks – risk of falling. •  Steep downhill section after Point 18.

This trail crosses an old beech forest, which is part of Le Marquaires forest nature reserve, and thus monitored particularly closely by the Cévennes National Park and the Office National des Forêts. Mountain-bike route #15. From the village, take the D 907 for 4 km towards the Tunnel du Marquaires. Before the tunnel, fork right towards the Le  Marquaires forester's house and continue on the forestry track to Gaseiral. Take the road uphill to the Col de Salides and there take the ridge track on the left to L'Hospitalet (GR 7). Go downhill to the Moulin d'Astier (Vébron) where you join up again with the D 907 to Gua. Cross Gua and cycle along the river Tarnon to get to Prat Nouvel and then to Rousses.

At the Col de Salidès, there are 360° panoramic views of Mont Aigoual, the Cévennes and the Causses! Mountain-bike route #14. From the village, take the D 907 for 4 km towards the Tunnel du Marquairès. Before the tunnel, fork right towards Le Marquairès forester's house and continue on the forestry track to Gaseiral. Take the road uphill to the Col de Salidès and there take the ridge track on your left to L'Hospitalet (GR 7). After about 3 km, take the track on the left that leads back to Rousses.

A total of 12 works installed on an 8km loop. Les Balcons de l'Aigoual" land-art trail Here, artists portray the human/nature relationship and confront the climatic phenomena of the Aigoual. The works are therefore constantly evolving. Art inserted into nature returns to an essential source of artistic creation: observation and inspiration by nature. Bramabiau is one of those grandiose and bizarre works of nature. A veritable cradle of French speleology, the tour is 1 km long and very accessible. You may be lucky enough to spot a beaver (1 metre long including tail, and weighing 15 to 30 kg) as you walk along the Tarnon at dusk or dawn. Keen eyes may discover clues about its presence. Beavers live in lodges dug into the riverbanks, with an underwater entrance. During daylight, they stay dry in a “bedroom”. Whether from its Latinised Celtic name, biber, or the Languedocian bebrou, the beaver gave Vébron its name and features on its coat of arms.

A village of 200 inhabitants, Vébron extends from the Tarnon valley to the Causse Méjean. It has a school, temple (Protestant church) and shops. Every summer, it hosts the International Video Film Festival, whose patron until 2014 was  French veteran actress] Bernadette Lafont. The square at the heart of the village is a lovely spot for a little rest.

Local floods can be catastrophic, like the one in 1900 described by Louis Tessier, a primary schoolteacher in Saint Roman, while on holiday in his native village: “Around noon, the atmosphere grew heavy with blackish clouds... At around 7 p.m., the storm headed north and soon the horizon all around was lit up by lightning... A deluge of rain hit the ground... At midnight, in profound darkness lit up by lightning, the alarm sounded... In the morning, the terrible news spread rapidly. The old mill at Vébron has been obliterated by the floodwaters, and all six members of the Goût family have been swept away...  Astié Mill has been destroyed, and all the bridges have lost their parapets... All that beautiful riverfront is now ruin and desolation - it seems like a bad dream...”

The western green lizard is a protected species in France, where it can be seen in areas with plentiful vegetation such as hedges, scrub, forest borders, meadows, etc., as long as there are also open spaces where it can sun itself. Fearful and fast, it will hide at the slightest sound.

The uphill section is in forest that partly stems from reforestation in the 1930s. First, there are Scots pines, whose patchy canopy lets through enough light for a grassy undergrowth to develop. A little higher up, a tightly reforested area of Douglas firs has no understory: no plants can grow for lack of light. Higher still, the undergrowth thins out here and there, and chestnuts reappear. There is a huge tree stump to the right of the path, a vestige of an ancient chestnut grove belonging to Broussous.

On the floor of the Montagut valley is a cave, La Baume Dolente (the doleful solace). In 1695, a Protestant gathering was held here. Like most Cevenol villages, Vébron had converted to Protestantism from the 16th century onwards. In 1685, Louis XIV revoked the Edict of Nantes, which had granted Protestants freedom of worship. With their temples (churches) destroyed and worship prohibited, they met instead at clandestine gatherings. The one at La Baume Dolente was denounced: five men were sent to the galleys, three women put in prison. It was the beginning of a long resistance effort that led to the Camisard rebellion.

Broussous seems lost in the woods, and yet it was an inhabited farm until the 1950s, surrounded by farmland and chestnut groves. Broussous being built in the schist/limestone contact zone, its architecture combines both types of rock. Its limestone lintels, which have been carved rounded, and its vaulted openings show that it was a nobleman's estate and then, in the 17th century, the sharecropping farm of one of the lords of Vébron.

The Tarnon valley was a significant area during the Camisard War. It sheltered the 3rd Camisard Army. Many clandestine gatherings were held here in the gloomy forests or in a cave underneath the Can de l'Hospitalet (known as Baume dolente).

Dry grassland is home to a multitude of insects, including bush crickets. At night, they produce a squealing sound by rubbing the stubs of their wings together. The sound has given them the name of “gouzi”. But despite their musical wings, they cannot fly, and hide in vegetation (such as boxwood or juniper bushes) to escape predators.

Ash trees, like the ones that border the path, like cool and damp environments. They were planted alongside paths by locals because ash branches, cut towards the end of summer, provided additional fodder for livestock.
