Municipal Camping Le Pradet in La Malene: Nature and Adventure

This physically challenging loop leads from the banks of the river Tarn to the Causse Méjean plateau, and offers  gorgeous panoramic views onto the Tarn Gorges and the Causse de Sauveterre. From the carpark in La Malène, cross the river Tarn and take the path on the right after the bridge. Take the first footpath on the left (after 300 m) and climb onto the Causse Méjean plateau. Go through Rieisse and, on leaving the hamlet, continue straight ahead towards the Roc des Hourtous. At the panoramic viewpoint of Les Hourtous, walk past the snack bar on its right to take a path that runs parallel to the ridge for 800 m. Then take the path downhill on the left to join up with the path overlooking the Tarn. Turn right onto it to return to the starting-point.

Between sky and earth, wander around on the cliffs of the Gorges du Tarn and gain some hight! Between the Griffon vultures and troglodyt hamlets prepare for suprising discoveries.Go towards the town center of the village Liaucous and come down on the cobblestone street then across the alleys to join the road on the left side and follow on about 500m.Take the path on the left that goes into the woods alongside the hill slope under the Roc des Agudes.Go through the hamlet of Eglazines under the cliff edge. This track goes to the cirque  of Saint-Marcellin.Arrive at the hamlet of Saint-Marcellin and continue on the track up to the causse de Sauveterre. Pass the cross and follow on about 200m.Get on the track on the leftside towards the fountain des Paillasses (drinking water source). Follow on the left the "caussenard" path.At the crossroads, come off the path on the right towards Vors and foward the track on the left until the junction with the path of Eglazines. Turn off towards South in direction of Puech about 800m. Leave the path and turn right onto the track going into the forest. This track goes along the cliff and passes below the via ferrata before regaining the village of Liaucous. 

Breath-taking, dizzying… the reference hike in the gorges of the Tarn and the Jonte, with the emblems of the Vase de Sèvre and the Vase de Chine, astonishing natural creations.1. Walk along the main street towards Meyrueis. Before the fish farm, climb to the left about ten steps between the houses and continue on the path that leads to a pin of the road. Turn right on the climbing path. Arriving at the second pin, follow the road towards the climb, which continues on concrete track.2. Arriving at Capluc, possibility to make a round-trip (30 minutes) to climb the Capluc rock. Wonderful views of le Rozier/Peyreleau and the Tarn valley. Back at the intersection, follow the path and pass the rock refuge, an old bread oven.3. On the left, stairs indicate the direction of the path Jacques Brunet, more steep variant, with more diffuse signs, which joins the circuit after the Francbouteille pass (4). This option will delight the biggest climbers and the youngest. Otherwise continue the path and climb in laces, along the ravine of Echos. Ignore the path that goes down to the right. At the crossroads, take a left to the Francbouteille pass (altitude 765 m).   4. On the Tarn side, after a kilometre walk, reach the Teil fountain (200m to the left below). The path widens and climbs regularly. At the pass, leave on your left a descent leading to l’Ermiatege St-Pons.5. In a pin, leave to the left the path leading to the rock of Cinglegros, and continue towards the Cassagnes pass (altitude 874m). At the first crossroads, go straight, and then turn to the second right in a southerly direction. At the bottom of a slight descent, go right, then left at the next fork. At this point, the path transforms into a track. Here begins a dazzling journey overlooking the cliffs of the Jonte.6. Pass successively at the Balcony of Vertigo (lookout point equipped with a bodyguard), then the Pas du Loup, a narrow way leading at the foot of the Vase de Chine and the Vase de Sèvres.7. The path joins the Echos ravine. Go down to the left towards Capluc and follow the same path as the way to reach the village.

On this trail, discover a very agricultural village, a restored dovecote, the flora of the causses, Neolithic man and the anecdote of the 3 bishops. An easy hike for the whole family. The atmosphere of the Causse is spectacular, with its vast stretches of desert and its silence. A few burning bushes and boxwoods add to the rugged authenticity of the land. The hamlet of Les Mazes is on the Causse Noir. Here, the land is arid, and sheep are king. And the 3 bishops? When the départements were created, around 1790, the 3 bishops of Gard, Lozère and Aveyron got together and deposited this cross at the boundaries. This trail takes you from the arid Causses plateau to the foothills at Le Puech Pounchut, and lets you discover the upper Jonte valley with all its contrasts. From the carpark, take the D 996 on the right until you reach a small park with a stone cross. Take the path on the left running alongside a high wall. Go uphill to join up with the D 986, then take the path opposite. This is steep for 150 m and joins up with a former road. Turn left onto this and walk to the road leading to Pauparelle. Turn right onto this road and walk to Pauparelle. Do not enter the hamlet (on your left), but go uphill on the path and, after about 100 m, fork right to start a very steep ascent. After 200 m, a track runs alongside the cliffs: take this and walk alongside the small road without crossing it. Turn right towards Salvinsac, go downhill into the gully and end up on the D 996 at Salvinsac. Cross the road to go down into the hamlet and cross the river Jonte. After the bridge, go uphill into a forest of conifers after a forestry track. After two hairpin bends, go right and slightly downhill at the pass. At the first crossroads, continue straight on the track until you reach a large crossroads. Here, go towards Meyrueis to reach the village vacances (holiday village). Cross the bridge over the river Brèze and walk alongside the public swimming-pool to get to Meyrueis. Turn right and cross the bridge to return to the carpark.

A sinkhole, lavogne (man-made-water hole) and dolmen are your signposts on this exploration of the agro-pastoral systems of yesteryear and today. From the crossroads, do not go towards La Condamine but instead take the path that crosses the vast farmed plain. Pass in between the ruins of Combe Lebrouze and the dolmen and continue straight on a path that heads into the small valley of Mativet. At the crossing, turn left onto the track that goes into the small valley and joins up with the road to Le Tomple. Turn left onto the road, go through the hamlet of Le Tomple, and take the track downhill towards a pass (col). NB: Not long before the pass, take the path on the left to the lavogne, then take the path above the lavogne to return to the lane leading to La Condamine. Turn left, pass in front of La Condamine and continue back to the car park.

This ruiniform block field (felsenmeer) on the Causse Méjean has resulted from the capricious dissolution of the dolomite limestone. It emerges suddenly, like a final panoramic viewpoint before the abyss of the gorges that delimit the Causse. From the car park, walk about 150 m through the hamlet, then turn left after the agricultural buildings.

This family walk lets you explore the Roquedols Estate with its château, dovecote and forest. The site's charm will work on both young and old! The walk starts with a very gentle slope in the forest, to the pigeon-loft. It then follows a former béal (irrigation channel) to reach the château and gardens.

Bramabiau is one of those grandiose and bizarre works of nature. A veritable cradle of French speleology, the tour is 1 km long and very accessible. Guided tour of around 1 hour along the Bonheur underground river. This is the place where cave enthusiasts are least likely to experience déjà vu. Temperature 10°C. Immerse yourself in art and nature at Aigoual! This circuit reveals regularly renewed installations inspired by nature and the landscapes of Mont-Aigoual. Located in the Borgne Valley, in the commune of Les Plantiers, our Fontfouillouse gîte welcomes you to an unspoilt valley at the foot of a 12th-century Romanesque church. In the midst of the Cévennes chestnut grove, we have created our group gîte. Discover an eco-museum in an old mill, with a fun exhibition for everyone. Children and adults alike can take an indoor and outdoor tour to learn more about this important part of our daily lives! In the heart of the Vallée Borgne, in the village's old mill, the Maison de l'Eau has naturally found its place. Around this witness to the past, a modern and entertaining exhibition presents water in the Cévennes. Mister Beaver, the mascot, invites young and old to a more unusual visit, combining questions, games and experiments... An interpretive trail completes the visit with a presentation of some of the tree species native to the Cévennes. This is a fun walk for the whole family, during which you'll come face-to-face with the birds that pass between forest and river. Equipped with a pair of binoculars, you can follow the signposted path to learn how to observe and recognize birds (also downloadable from our website). In addition to visits, the Maison de l'Eau also offers environmental education sessions for schoolchildren, leisure centers and the general public, as well as nature outings (on the trail of the beaver, the otter, the little people of the water...), walks, visits to the village... Come and stroll along the béal, let yourself be lulled by the sound of water on the mill wheels! There are 3 interpretation trails in the Vallée Borgne area, including one on the route of the Maison de l'Eau des Plantiers.

“La Malène” means “bad hole”... But for several decades now, it has been more accurate to call it a little jewel that delights tourists. What is its secret? Using the boats which were once strictly utilitarian, back in the days when the Tarn was a transport and trade route! On 29 December 1952, the Cooperative Society of Boatmen of the Gorges du Tarn was officially created. In 1985, the Cooperative became a Worker Cooperative. Once on the water, the boatmen will help you discover sites that can only be seen and approached by boat, such as La Momie Cave, or the Woman with a Parasolrock formation above La Croze. That's at least two good reasons to treat yourself to this journey by water accompanied by the boatmen of La Malène.

"Traditionally, a hillclimbing race is held in this small town on the first Sunday in July. The first races were goat races. Marthe marshalled her goats at the bridge, climbed the slope of La Canourgue by herself and then called to them from up there. The goats ran to her. The winner was rewarded with a fragrant bouquet of bartas (box)." (M.P Leroy-Delmer)

"300 m  from the  hamlet, the ruins of the Château de Planiol dominate a flat area (planiol) of the river, which is 8 m deep here. Then the Romanesque 12th century chapel appears, probably built on the site of a Carolingian oratory. An 'expiatory chapel' has been added, which contains the remains of the martyrs of La Malène. Another chapel is occupied by the Virgin Mary standing in a boat. It is brought out every May for the boatmen's pilgrimage. As for the bridge, it was built in 1856 in the place of a former ford crossed by the Esperelle draille (path for seasonal livestock migration). Because of its scant height, it did not survive the devastating floods of 1875 and 1900.” (M.P Leroy-Delmer)

"On the square in the hamlet of Rieisse, you'll be able to admire a communal oven. The gable of the house right next to it has gutters which lead into a former cistern inside. All the rainwater from the roof converged on this tank, inside the kitchen, via gutters that were made first of wood and later of zinc. The cistern has a depth of 2 to 5 m and a capacity of 10,000 to 30,000 litres. When the foundations of the sheepfold were dug, Roman pottery for keeping resin was found. Indeed, whenever pine trees were felled, the resin was extracted and sent to the coast, where it was used to caulk boats. (M.P Leroy-Delmer)

"Hourtous means 'small gardens' In Occitan. This cliff promontory is a private and designed space, and displays the Occitan cross. Let your eyes be drawn down the 400 m plunge to the narrows and then westwards to the Cirque des Baumes topped by the Sublime Point. At mid-slope you can make out the profile of the Woman with a Parasol and her Court, famous dolomite rock formations.” (M.P Leroy-Delmer)

Whilst this member of the buttercup family might seem plentiful, it has become rare and is limited to a few places in France (Causses, Alsace) and south-eastern Europe. It can be seen in April-May in the steppe flora. This plant is protected – you may take photos but under no circumstances take the plant! It secretes a substance through its roots that tends to limit the growth of plants around it, especially legumes.

This traditional Causse Méjean hamlet has a dozen year-round residents, who mostly work in tourism (gîtes, chambres d'hôte, inn, grocer's shop) and agriculture (flocks of sheep, honey, jams, etc.).

This resplendent bird deserves its name, with its feathery crest on its head. It has a slender beak that it uses to extract larvae and insects from the ground. Its plumage is distinctive: an orangey dark pink, with black-and-white-striped wings and back. It is very difficult to observe, but can be identified by its characteristic call of oop-oop-oop. Locals call it poupoune. The hoopoe is a migrating bird.
