Take the footpath at the end of the parking lot down to the Vénéon torrent and its magnificent Pont des Rajas. Cross the pretty stone bridge and climb towards the Rajas houses. Continue uphill to enter the Vallon de la Muande and follow the torrent on the right bank, then on the left bank after a second stone bridge. At the shepherd's hut, cross the gently sloping slabs to reach the refuge hidden behind this small glacial lock. THE PARC DES ECRINS, A FRAGILE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT TO PROTECT When hiking in the Parc des Ecrins, you must respect the regulations that allow you to enjoy this exceptional natural area: do not leave the trails, dogs are forbidden even on a leash, do not pick flowers or collect fossils, minerals, animals..., do not throw anything on the ground (bring your own garbage). A beautiful, slightly challenging hike with one of the best views of the Écrins at the end. TECHNICAL INFORMATION Start: Champhorent parking lot Height difference: 450m Duration: 1 h 30 outward and 1 h 15 return Distance: 4.6 km Level Difficult hike ITINERARY From the parking lot, follow the RD 530 up to Champébran. A steady climb through pastures takes you to the Clot du Sert, with its superb panorama of the Écrins and the Vénéon valley. On the way down, be sure to visit the fully restored hamlet of Champébran. Dogs must be kept on a leash due to the presence of herding dogs at certain times of the year. SIGHTSEEING - The Écrins and the Fétoules - The Champébran water mills

The ascent to the Lac des Fétoules is a beautiful trail overlooking the valley of La Lavey and offering views of the high peaks of L'Oisans. Take the path at the back of the car park to drop down to the mountain stream Le Vénéon and its magnificent bridge, the Pont des Rajas. Cross the pretty stone bridge and head uphill towards the houses of Les Rajas. Carry on uphill to reach the valley, the Vallon de la Lavey, and follow the right-hand bank of the mountain stream, and then cross to the left-hand bank over a second stone bridge. At the shepherd's hut, cross a gently sloping area of stone slabs until you come to the refuge hidden behind this small glacial rock bar. After the refuge, cross the mountain stream La Muande and head towards the Lac des Fétoules. You wind uphill across some screes and grassy slopes until you reach the Lac des Fétoules. You then drop relatively steadily until you come to the path leading to the refuge. Turn right and follow the outward route in reverse to reach the car park in Champhorent.

An ideal hot-weather hike in the Clot forest along the Vénéon river TECHNICAL INFORMATION Start: Parking du Clot Height difference: 100m Duration: 1 h 15 outward and 1 h return Distance: 4.5 km Level : RANDO : Easy MAP AND TOPO IGN Top 25 map n°3336 ET Topo map OBP n°5 (Oisans au Bout des Pieds), trail 535 -566 ITINERARY Take the road on your right before St Christophe to the end. From the Clot parking lot, follow the signs for the Mariande valley. The trail descends through the ancient forest to the Clot bridge. As you cross the bridge, admire the gorges and the turquoise waters of the Vénéon. At the intersection above the bridge, follow the signs for Cascade de la Mariande. Pass the ruins of the former hamlet of Clot d'Outre and continue on to the waterfall. Retrace your steps to the previous intersection and take the path to the Rajat bridge/Lavey valley. After a short climb, the path descends to the Muande footbridge, cross it and continue on to the Rajat bridge, a superb stone bridge on the path up to the Lavey refuge. For the return journey, take the same path and branch off directly towards Le Clot to return to the parking lot. The path rises slightly before arriving at the village of Le Souchey. Then go down towards the Vénéon and Le Clot, and then cross a large wooden footbridge over the Vénéon. Go up the path and, just before the village of Le Clot, take the path leading to the Champhorent car park.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION Start: Parking du Clot Difference in altitude: 160m Duration: 2 h 30 loop Distance : 4 km Level : Medium hike ITINERARY From the Le Clot parking lot, follow signs for Pré Clot. At the next junction, take the path on your left, which climbs steeply for about 55 minutes to the RD 530. Cross the road, turn right towards La Bérarde, the path is 50m on the left. At Pré Clot, level with the Arias gite, cross the RD530 again, and the path descends gently to the hamlet of Bernardière. Take time to visit Bernardière, which has been completely restored. When you reach the small road below the hamlet, turn left to return to your car. Follow this path and you'll be surprised by the diversity of landscapes and atmospheres, through mountain pastures and forests.

Between the Alpe du Pin mountain refuge and the glacial rock bar of La Mariande, this itinerary takes you across the tranquil plateau of the mountainside crossing between the lakes (known as a "travers" in the region), passing through a variety of habitat From the car park in Les Granges, take the path signposted« Refuge de l'Alpe du Pin ». Drop down below the hamlet and then cross the small stone bridge spanning the Vénéon (be sure to close the gate behind you). Then take the path winding up towards the Cascade de la Froide Pisse waterfall, which could be seen on the right as you climbed uphill. Follow the path until you come to the small Alpe du Pin refuge for a meal and/or refreshment break. Then follow the path signposted « Vallon de la Mariande ». Cross wetlands, heather moors and glacial screes and enjoy a succession of impressive views of the Tête des Fétoules and the Barre des Écrins along the gentle flat area on the mountainside crossing between the lakes, and on to the glacial rock bar of La Mariande. Just before climbing up to the rock bar at the intersection, turn left towards Le Clot (Forêt de la Gassaudia). Drop down on the path which twists and turns through the forest until you come to a waterfall, the Cascade de la Mariande. Turn left towards Saint Christophe and back along the Vénéon, rising gently uphill. Cross the bridge, again being sure to close the gate behind you, and then carry on up to the car park in Les Granges.

A family hike between pastures and waterfalls that's sure to please. Cross the bridge and head straight for Alpe du Pin. The climb is steady and you'll be refreshed by the spray from the Froide Pisse waterfall. As you walk, take the time to read the story written on the signs along the way. On arrival, discover the stone Alpe du Pin refuge, which overlooks the Vénéon valley from its belvedere. Built in 1947, the refuge has retained the modesty of its origins over the decades, while reasonably adapting its comfort to today's requirements. Cross the bridge and then climb up to the Alpe du Pin refuge, refreshed by the spray from the Froide Pisse waterfall. As you walk, take the time to read the story written on the signs along the way. On arrival at the refuge, stop for a snack offered by the warden. Continue your loop towards the Mariande valley, through pastures where marmots mingle with sheep, with a panoramic view of Saint-Christophe-en-Oisans and the Plat de la Selle. Then follow the Clot, taking the path on your left, and a long descent begins through the coniferous forest of the Clot, with its delicious scent of pine and undergrowth. At the bend in the path, the Mariande waterfall catches your eye with all its power and freshness. At the foot of the forest, turn left towards Pont des Granges / Saint-Christophe-en-Oisans. The path then leads through the Vénéon gorges to the Pont des Granges. Perched on an Alpine prairie, at the frontier with the high mountains, the Olan refuge provides a unique panorama on La Chapelle-en-Valgaudemar, the prestigious Olan cirque, the Cime du Vallon... A stopover for mountaineers and hikers: a mountain road to the Refuge des Souffles. Shared room and kitchen upstairs, running water and fountain. Meals by reservation. Access from La Chapelle-en-Valgaudemar in 4 hours; elevation: 1245 metres.

The Tête des Fétoules, a summit in the Ecrins mountains, rises to an altitude of 3,459 metres. Along with the Tête de l'Etret, among others, it is one of a series of peaks separating the Vallon des Etages (to the east) from the Vallon de la Lavey (to the west).  It was first climbed on 29 August 1876 by Emmanuel Boileau de Castelmau with Pierre Gaspard and his son.

Crossing the Vénéon, this superb stone humpback bridge dates back to the seventeenth century. It is an example of the know-how of our forebears, and the fact that this substantial project was undertaken at all is an indication of the importance of this valley. This bridge also constitutes built evidence of the age-old human occupation of the La Lavey valley. The arch of this bridge was restored in 1972. The structure was decrepit and the joints were completely re-grouted. As you cross the bridge, note the colour of the water of the Vénéon. This is due to fine particles in suspension, the result of erosion of the glaciers in the upper reaches of the Vénéon and dissolved silica from the feldspars contained in the crystalline rocks.

The valley of La Lavey is crossed by the mountain stream La Muande. One hundred and fifty metres upstream from the confluence of this mountain stream with that of the Vénéon, the valley culminates at a gorge and the La Lavey waterfall.

Mountain streams are characterised by a sometimes very steep slope and a tumultuous current. Due to the continual intermingling of elements, the water is highly oxygenated and favourable to certain animal species (brown trout, water invertebrates, etc.) that are adapted to the ecological conditions of these ecosystems (even when the water turns to ice !). Mountains streams are also a major factor in erosion due to their role in crushing elements and transporting sediment from the upper slope pools to the large rivers. They represent a very fragile and threatened environment, particularly due to human development, and are among the ecosystems needing to be protected !

Below the car park in Champhorent there are terraces, most of them supported by a dry stone wall. Before 1970, ten or so plots were still in cultivation (potatoes, turnips, barley and rye). At present, just four are in use.

In the mountains where the villages are sometimes isolated from each other and too small to have a chapel, oratories were often built. They are mainly small and made of local stone, with an alcove at the centre where a small statue, a plaque or a holy image is placed, representing an important element in religious life. A local place of worship, they are often dedicated to the Virgin Mary or to a saint. They become the goal of a procession or a votive festival for the local population.

The birth of Alexandre EYMARD in Le Souchet in July 1881 shows that these summer pasture chalets were lived in at that time. Back then, every year, from mid-June to mid-September, the village of Le Souchet was the home of four families. Every summer, the women went with their children up to Le Souchet, while the men stayed in the villages in the valley. The animals (sheep, goats and cattle) joined in the summer journey. The prairies around the village were mown, the hay gathered in and taken down to the valley in autumn, with the help of a cable running to Champhorent.The families' livestock included, in general, about two cows, a dozen goats and fifty or so sheep. In summer, the cows and goats were milked in the morning and evening to make cheese.In the valley, the men collected the fodder, and some worked as mountain guides, an important extra source of income in the Alps.

The cones of the fir tree, firmly fixed on the branches and standing like large candles, are hard to spot since they grow right at the summit of the tree. But the cones of the spruce hang from the end of the branches and fall to the ground when ripe. As for the leaves, the spruce's needles are slightly prickly, but not the fir tree's, which retain a characteristic deep green colour to the point of featuring on colour palettes as "pine green".

Bryophytes, more commonly known as mosses, are perfectly adapted to humid woodland environments, and are a vital component in the forest eco-system. A very ancient plant family, they reproduce through an archaic system of spores, and water is needed for their gametes to meet. They do not have roots, strictly speaking, but a system of rhizomes enabling them to be fixed to the soil, to a tree or a rock. The refuge is set on a magnificent belvedere, so you'll enjoy a gentle hike through unspoilt countryside. Around the refuge you'll find many activities such as hiking (tour du grand Cond, lac de la Mariande, lac du Salude, col de la Mariande...), mountaineering (tête de Lauranoure, col de la haute pisse...) and climbing (2 big routes in the pierroux, 3 routes around the Froide Pisse waterfall). Built in 1947, the refuge has retained the modesty of its origins over the decades, while reasonably adapting its comfort to today's requirements. The Alpe du Pin Refuge is little known and discreet, and stands on the mountain pasture of the same name. It belongs to the Jarrets d'Acier association. It has everything needed to delight the heart, the soul and the calf muscles! Built in 1947, it has preserved its humble origins down the years by making reasonable adaptations to the needs of contemporary comfort. The Alpe du Pin Refuge is located at an altitude of 1,805 m, at the foot of the Tête de Lauranoure (3,325 m), the view of which from St-Christophe leaves no one indifferent. With a capacity of 20 places in a single dormitory, the visitor soon feels at home, and the layout of the refuge helps promote meetings and conversation. You can count on a simple, warm and friendly welcome from the refuge keepers.

Located at 1797 m altitude, a 2-hour walk from the hamlet of Champhorent on an easy family trail up the Muande torrent. This is a place where mountaineers, hikers and mountain people can share their emotions. At the refuge you'll find everything you need for this special adventure, and the wardens are there to advise, inform and guide you in your choice of itinerary. At the foot of accessible glaciers and lakes (la Muande, les Rouies, les Sellettes, les Bêches, les Fétoules...), fauna, flora and herds are waiting for you, and everyone, from the youngest to the oldest, from the contemplative to the adventurous, from the climber to the walker, will find what they're looking for. You'll be able to sample organic and local produce, all in a creative and colorful cuisine. This will give us the time we need to carry out a complete refurbishment that will enable us to welcome you even better.

This is a refuge in the Ecrins range, at an altitude of 1,797 m in the Lavey valley, which leads to the Vénéon valley.In 1881, the Isère section of the CAF (Club Alpin Français) bought two buildings in the village of La Lavey. The refuge was renovated and had a storey added to it in 1949 (24 places), and was extended in 1972. It can currently sleep 44 people. The refuge provides access to the lakes of Bèches, Rouies and Muande, with the latter still developing, after the withdrawal of the glacier at the end of the Muande. It is also the starting point towards Tête des Fétoules, Les Rouies, L'Olan, Pointe Maximin, L'Aiguille d'Olan or L'Aiguille des Arias, and a way to pass through the Olan gap towards Le Valjouffrey. One can also pass through the Col de la Lavey to reach the Chardon valley. In winter 2011, a spectacular rock slide, which can still be seen today, with several thousand m3 of rock, occurred near the refuge. The refuge is the culmination of a very fine trail, and famous for its cuisine. There is also a fine site of climbing stones around the refuge !

At the end of your ascent to the refuge, you can relax on the sunny terrace, sipping a juice or a draught beer and enjoying the exceptional view over the Étages valley. From the refuge, you can then access numerous climbing routes. Le Soreiller has a capacity of 70 places divided into different dormitories. In winter, the refuge has 20 places. In summer, you'll come across herds of cattle in the mountain pastures, so avoid them wherever possible.

The Vallon de la Selle is dominated by this panoramic refuge with its bold architecture. It's a welcoming place for mountaineers, climbers and hikers approaching the glacier. Reservations strongly advised WINTER Off-piste from La Grave and Les Deux Alpes Ice cascades in the valley The old refuge is used as a "winter refuge" outside the guarding season: 12 places with woollen blankets, some crockery, no water, no gas, no heating, no electricity and no toilet. Please leave this area clean, take your garbage downstairs, and close the windows and doors! If you have any problems, please call the janitor on 06.03.49.39.98! In summer, you'll come across herds of cattle in the mountain pastures, so try to avoid them as far as possible.

In 1908, Châtellerat pastoral cabin was hastily built by the community of Valjouffrey. Destroyed several times in avalanches, is still sheltered numerous mountaineers. It was rebuilt in 1921 in a less exposed place and already ideas about a « real » refuge were growing.

During the summer of 1923, the guide Célestin Bernard took charge of the construction of the refuge at Font Turbat. Several great mountaineering names are associated with it like Guery, Ripert, Frendo, Fourastier, Boell, who came to explore the mountains at Valjouffrey. In 1934, Devies and Gervasutti traced a historic itinerary in the North-West face of the Pic de l'Olan. 22 years later, the direct Couzy-Desmaison (ED) was opened to the left of the previous one, surmounting the steepest part of the face. The construction of the refuge As it stands now dates from 1962. It was extended and renovated in 1996-1997.

Hut (2130 m) guarded daily from mid-June to the first weekend of October and on weekends from late May. 58 places available. Access in 4 hours from l'Alleau parking (934 m) in Venosc. From this Hamlet, take direction "Refuge de la Muzelle" after the small bridge. Follow the winding path leading to the ruins of Pleney. The path continues near the torrent until "Clot du Stella". The bottom of the valley comes up to the rock wall at Muzelle, the pic du Clapier du Peyron and the head of the Muraillette. The modern history of this place is marked by mountaineering. It was on the 2nd July 1875 that Coolidge guided by  Almer father and son opened the normal way to Roche de la Muzelle by the East North East face and  the North-East ridge.. At this time, even if a pastoral cabin was used by the mountaineers the bivouac was still often used in the Muzelle valley. In 1967, it was in the rocky cirque that the community built the refuge on the shore of Muzelle lake.
