Tour of Oisans and Ecrins

Two weeks of active hiking, taking us to the foot of the highest summits in the southern Alps. From Le Bourg d'Oisans, the Tour of Oisans and Ecrins footpath begins its grand tour with the help of handrails to reach the small villages perched on the mountainside. It descends towards the Sarenne mountain stream and then goes up to the mountain pass, with a panorama over the Monts de Lans. We then go down towards Clavans and the Ferrand valley, before a fine climb as far as Besse-en-Oisans, at the edge of the vast Emparis plateau. Above, Col de Souchet offers a five-star view over the Meije. A descent of almost 1000 metres leads to La Grave. You then walk along the River Romanche as far as its source on the mountain pastures of Villar d'Arène. When you arrive at Col d'Arsine, the spectacle is astonishing. The mountainous setting is an invitation to visit the Arsine glacier lake before beginning our long descent along the Petit Tabuc mountain stream as far as the Guisane valley and Monêtier-les-Bains. Our destination is Vallouise via Col de l'Eychauda and the peaceful chalets of Chambran. 8 km of road along the Onde mountain stream bring us to the Jas Lacroix alpine pastures. Crossing Col de l'Aup Martin, the highest point in all the tour, is always rich in adventure, and the descent towards the Pré de la Chaumette is equally exciting. To reach Lake Vallonpierre and Valgaudemar, you have to take care crossing no less than three mountain passes carved out in the schist. Along the Séveraisse, the footpath joins La Chapelle-en-Valgaudemar and then rises through Villar Loubière as far as the Souffles refuge and the impressive Col de la Vaurze. Equally impressive is the descent towards the unspoilt Valjouffrey. The rich green Col de Côte Belle contrasts with the schist landscapes we have seen until now. Valsenestre, in the Béranger valley, comes as a well-earned break before we set off for the last few twists and turns. We arrive at the vertical Col de la Muzelle, leading to the Vénéon. One last mountain pass takes us to the biggest lake in L’Oisans, the Lauvitel, and we are back in Le Bourg d'Oisans. We have come full circle! You can follow the GR® 54 footpath either from Le Bourg d'Oisans, L'Argentière, La Grave or from any other village along the way.

ORIGINAL ITINERARY From Le Bourg-d'Oisans, head towards Vieille Morte via Les Essoulieux. Just before the ruins of the old hamlet, coming from Bourg d'Oisans, you will find the path that goes up on the right through the woods towards Récompense/ Villard-Reculas. The forest of beeches, oaks and spruces is home to a rich fauna, and you may even meet a roe deer. At Villard-Reculas, an area of mountain pastures and hay meadows surrounds the village. The view extends over the plain of Le Bourg-d'Oisans and the Taillefer massif. The houses in the village of Villard-Reculas are highlighted by a harmonious architecture using exposed stone and wood. At the church, continue in the direction of Lanchal. This path takes you through the meadows and back to the tarmac road. You can also continue towards Huez and stay on the tarmac road to the Pas de la Confession. From the shale cliffs overlooking the valley between Villard Reculas and Huez, the view from the balcony over the whole plain is superb. Below Huez, you can enjoy a plunging view of the Sarenne gorges. We take the route of the Pas de la Confession. . From Huez, join St Ferréol by the road to join the path which passes in front of the Chapelle St Antoine and crosses to the right before going directly down to the Ribot d'Huez by crossing the Alpe d'Huez road twice. A short descent through the forest, before crossing the road again, leads to Ribot d'en Bas. You arrive in La Garde between the houses, by the road to La Ville. Next to the cemetery, the route continues in the direction of Bourg d'Oisans. The descent cuts through the bends of Alpe d'Huez before joining the road to Bassey. On the main road you turn right to return to the centre of Bourg d'Oisans. It is possible to link the Pas de la Confession to the Ribot d'Huez by the Chemin des Miettes (OBP N°2 -266). This very steep path always follows the line of the slope in short laces. From the path in the pine forest there is a panoramic view of the 21 bends of Alpe d'Huez, the plain of Bourg d'Oisans and the Rochail massif. The villarais therefore claimed to be of good virtue. An oratory at the start of the road, on the Huez side, was an obligatory stop to confess before setting off

Alpe d'Huez, the mythical climb

Want to relive the moments of euphoria on this mythical stage of the Tour de France? From Bourg d'Oisans, the climb has an incline of 7.9% over a total length of 13.8 km. No one has ever beaten Marco Pantani’s impressive record of 37’35’’. Itinerary no. 4 of the “Cycling in Oisans” guide (Oisans Tourisme) Departure / Arrival: Bourg d'Oisans 720 m Time: 2 h Distance (R/T): 31 km Highest point: 1850 m Lowest point: 720 m Total ascent: 1266 m Max. gradient: 15% Map: Michelin Local Map no. 333 Isère, Savoie ITINERARY The ride starts in front of the tourist office in Bourg d'Oisans. From Bourg d’Oisans, follow the road towards Alpe d'Huez. Enjoy pedalling on the flat for a short kilometre before tackling the famous 21 bends. The first bit is very hard, with 12% gradients for some sections. Make sure you save your energy on those first 2 to 3 kilometres. From Huez, 6 km from the finishing line, it will be easier to impose your rhythm. When arriving at Alpe d'Huez, follow signs to “Office de Tourisme”, then follow the indications “Itinéraire du Tour de France” until the official arrival at the top of the Rif Nel avenue (above the Étendard roundabout). THAT LITTLE BIT FURTHER: Lac Besson You may wish to continue the road up to Lake Besson. --- Distance (R/T): 8 km Time: 25 min Total ascent: 232 m The Tour de France The “road up to Alpe”, as it is affectionately called, has become a cyclists’ sanctuary. It is unique and magical for its itinerary and its hairpin bends, each of which has a name and a number, and when the Tour de France passes by, its hillsides are all packed with spectators. On the very day of the Tour, both sides of the road are flanked with crowds along the 14 km ascent. The ride to Alpe d’Huez has become a real legend!

Villard Notre Dame and Villard Reymond

This ascent carved out of the cliff face is very spectacular. The road very soon rises above the Bourg d'Oisans plain. The views over the Grandes Rousses massif and Romanche and the Vénéon Valleys are stunning. Itinerary no. 8 of the “Cycling in Oisans” guide (Oisans Tourisme) Departure / Arrival (loop): Bourg d’Oisans 720 m Time: 3 h Distance: 31 km Highest point: 1686 m Lowest point: 710 m Total ascent: 1159 m Max. gradient: 10% Map: Michelin Local Map no. 333 Isère, Savoie ITINERARY In the centre of Bourg d’Oisans, take the D219 towards Villard Notre Dame. The road very soon rises above the valley. Make sure to warm up properly in the plains before you start the climb. The first part of the road, which is cut straight through the rock, is particularly strenuous, mainly because of the three unlit tunnels which are sometimes plunged into pitch darkness. So, do not go on this tour without making sure that you have proper lighting! Although there is not much traffic, this narrow road and the closeness of the precipice make encounters with vehicles rather dangerous. Then, from the second part of the tour, you will be able to pick up speed along the route which winds through the forest up to the village. As soon as you arrive in Villard Notre Dame, THE village square appears without warning. From there, you can push the door of the church: its interior is well worth a quick visit. If this charming climb whetted your appetite, then look out for the “Bar / Casse-croute”. Otherwise, cross the village and continue to climb up to a forest track leading to Villard Reymond. The surface is unpaved, but you can generally cycle along it without any problems. You can always dismount, if necessary. At the end of this track, you arrive at the Col du Solude (1686 m), the highest point of your route. A tarred road circles around Villard Reymond taking you to the entry of the village. Turn right to cycle down directly to Bourg d’Oisans on the D210. Before beginning the descent, you could also climb back up to the village to enjoy a little a refreshing break on the sunny terrace of “Gîte de l'eau Blanche”. HOT WEATHER TIP This ride can be enjoyed in either direction starting from Bourg d’Oisans. If you’re looking to avoid the heat of summer, it’s worth remembering that the road between Bourg d’Oisans and Villard Notre Dame is in the shade in the afternoon whereas the descent down from Villard Reymond on the sunny side.

At the pass, you can take a break at the chalets and the restaurants at the ski resort of Col d'Ornon. THAT LITTLE BIT FURTHER: Col de Parquetout If you’re brave enough to continue up to the Col de Parquetout, the ride gets a lot tougher! Even though the climb is relatively short, there’s no let up. Sophie Dode Artiste Peintre

Sophie Dode infuses the spirit of the mountains and the landscape into her work. Her canvases embrace the peaks, follow the torrents, sometimes descend all the way to the sea, climb back up snowy valleys, and warm themselves in the gentle glow of mountain chalets. Sophie Dode works in her studio nestled in the heart of one of the small villages of our large Les 2 Alpes municipality. She expresses herself on canvas, jute, cardboard, paper, and more recently… on your walls. Her artworks range from intimate small formats to large panoramic triptychs. Between landscape and abstraction, her creativity draws nourishment from the marvellous scenery around us — our mountains, their light, and nature through the seasons. The “landscape” becomes a springboard from which the artist launches herself toward form, colour, and emotion. The mountain becomes a mirror, a source of energy and contemplation. Sophie makes her own paints from acrylic and pigments. The water used in her studio is also left to settle in a genuine effort to respect our environment. UPCOMING EXHIBITIONS & EVENTS EXHIBITION at Hôtel Les Flocons In its soft and warm setting, on December 21 and 22, 2025, from 2:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. 9 rue du Cairou, 38860 Les 2 Alpes. In April, the beautiful Chalet Mounier** will also dedicate three days of exhibition to our mountain artist. (Dates to be announced.) Children’s workshop at the Les 2 Alpes recreation centre Second week of the Christmas holidays. Permanent Exhibitions Sophie Dode is delighted to exhibit year-round at the warm and gourmet restaurant “La Porte d'à Côté”, 70 avenue de La Muzelle, 38860 Les 2 Alpes. All works are available for purchase with no commission, and deliveries are carried out by the artist. Selected works also await you at the excellent Agence Immobilière La Muzelle 2 rue du Grand Plan, Les 2 Alpes (open daily except weekends). Hôtel Les Mélèzes, 17 rue des Vikings, also hosts several works in its cosy fireside lounge, where you can enjoy cocktails and hot chocolates. This winter, you will also discover a small collection on raw canvas at Le Petit Cosy, 94 avenue de La Muzelle, Les 2 Alpes. And in the brand-new craft and art boutique “Écrin d’Oisans”, in the charming village of Venosc. Info: 07 45 09 92 39 — Accessible daily by gondola at the end of the resort toward Alpe de Venosc. GALTA the Alpine Treasures Gallery

The Musée des Minéraux has become the Galerie des Trésors Alpins (GALTA). It has undergone a makeover, taking you on a journey through 3 universes: crystals, treasures of the Oisans, an immersive journey to the heart of Alpine fauna and the new "Oisans in the eye of the comics" trail. The richness of its mineralogical collection and the dynamic staging of the wildlife area make it a wonderful place to discover the natural and cultural heritage of the Oisans. The museum is a member of the Route des Savoir-Faire de l'Oisans. Guided tours led by the Centre de Géologie de l'Oisans, the Parc des Écrins and members of the "Club des Cristalliers" are available on reservation in July and August. The world : L'OISANS AUX QUATRE SAISONS A sensory show (images and sounds) that takes visitors on a twenty-minute audio narrative explaining the life of Oisans wildlife according to the seasons and their layering in the great landscape. In partnership with the Ecrins National Park, the show raises awareness of the need to respect natural spaces and the animals that frequent them. This immersive show was created with the help of Jean-Marc Rochette, a comic strip artist who is very involved in the Oisans region. As a result, the trail is imbued with a unique poetic and sensory atmosphere. The trail is available in French and English. CRYSTAL, A TREASURE OF THE OISANS A brand-new heritage trail showcases the region's most emblematic crystals: Epidote, quartz, axinite, anatase and siderite have all found their home! In an interplay of transparent surfaces, the tour is organized around three themes: geology, local heritage and crystallography. A large part of the exhibition is devoted to crystallographic marvels. We learn how crystals are formed, and the origin of their shape and color. THE OISANS IN THE EYE OF COMICS The 8th art makes its entrance to the museum to magnify the Oisans and those who live here. Beautifully illustrated by Clara Debray's drawings and Éric Savoldelli's comic strips, this new tour also features a host of audio-visuals, podcasts and sensory walks. Structured around five themes, the tour explores the links between man and nature, the fascination of the "great landscape", the adaptations required to cope with the rigours of the territory, and the challenges that drive people to surpass themselves, not forgetting the "great firsts" of the pioneers who left their mark on the Oisans with their sensational adventures. TEMPORARY EXHIBITIONS Discover our temporary exhibition space all year round. BOUTIQUE-LIBRAIRIE As part of the museum's redevelopment, the boutique has been redesigned. More functional, it is now located in the reception hall and features new items bearing the artist's signature and derived from his work. A selection of books, comics, albums, novels and stories invite you to extend your visit on various naturalist themes. Free access to the store during museum opening hours.

Bourg-d'Oisans village

Here you are in Bourg-d'Oisans at an altitude of 700m: all around you are mountains and underfoot is the plain. This landscape has been shaped over thousands of years at the same time as the Alps were being created. The mountains you see, and the plain you walk on, are the consequences of shifting continents, the major ice ages and the subsequent warming. Humans have also helped shape this landscape over the last few centuries, adapting to and taking advantage of natural and geological constraints. The dammed rivers and the network of drainage canals, for example, have allowed the habitat to expand and agriculture to develop in the plain, creating a mountain "bocage" with fields and hedges. However, these actions have never eradicated certain natural hazards, such as avalanches and rockfalls. Half-wild and half-tamed, this landscape and its features are home to a multitude of animal and plant species, some of which are protected. Lake St Laurent: when the Vénéon-Romanche glacier retreated, it stagnated in the lower valley and a lake of more than 5,000 hectares then occupied the entire valley from Bourg-d'Oisans to Allemond. The alluvium deposited by the Romanche and the Vénéon gradually plugged up the lake and filled in the plain to a depth of 500m. In fact, if it weren't for the lake, which gradually filled in, the village would only be at an altitude of 200m! Bourg-d'Oisans is now a delightful little town of international renown where mountain lovers come, both in summer and winter, to stay and enjoy the many activities on offer!

The former Lac Saint-Laurent

The former Lac Saint-Laurent

The Bourg d'Oisans plain was hollowed out over the centuries by glaciers, before being filled by sediment from rivers that formed a lake, called the Lac St-Laurent. On several occasions over a very long period, this wide valley has been a lake. The Bourg d'Oisans basin is characteristic of the erosion and accumulation that occurred at the end of the tertiary and quaternary eras due to the glacial waters that dissected the mountainous mass, reducing it to a network of crests. The successive lakes and deposits of rivers filled the valley with sediment, but the glacial rock bar was backed up by another rock bar formed by two alluvial cones from mountain streams opposite the current Pont de la Véna bridge (just outside Livet on the way to Grenoble). Upstream, the Romananche river formed a lake, the Lac St-Laurent, which was regularly emptied. Bourg d'Oisans was then called Saint-Laurent du Lac. Prior to 1091, it is difficult to pinpoint an exact date as to when the lake was formed, although mentions of it have been found in documents dated 1058. In 1191, the Infernet was the scene of a terrible drama, when a substantial rock fall and landslide completrly blocked the flow of the Romanche, creating an insurmountable barrier. This caused the lake to spread to over 18 km in length, submerging the plain under 10 m of water. St Laurent du bord du Lac completely disappeared under the water and all the local inhabitants had to flee their homes, seeking safety on higher ground. According to some documents, the water rose to a level of 741 m above sea level. 28 years later, on 14 September 1219, the dam suddenly burst, creating a catastrophic flood that reached as far as Grenoble (known as the "Flood of Grenoble") killing some 5,000 people. The natural dam had given way under the sheer weight of the water and an enormous volume of water rushed into the gorge with the violence of a hurricane, sweeping away everything in its path, whether trees, fields or whole villages... Although smaller in size, the lake continue to exist for another three centuries, sometimes increasing in volume, as on 4 August 1465 after a terrible summer storm. In 1429, it was recorded that the lake had dried up, only to return at a later date. In 1540, reduced to a "puddle", it finally disappeared... Over the following centuries, the Romanche wended its way through the plain, causing regular floods. In the 18th century, dykes were built to contain the river and the plane was drained using the grid system that now makes for an original landscape. Once the plain had been restored, plans were made to clean it up and grow crops. Back in the 13th century, just after the 1219 catastrophe, the village of St Laurent became the centre of interest for all the local population and villages. The tantrums of the Romanche were only contained once and for all in 1935, with the construction of the Chambon Dam. Website: bourgdoisans.com / freneydoisans.com

Café A

Located on the ground floor of La Maison Aribert, Le Café A is housed in a huge cube bathed in light. Chef Aribert's other signature in his village coffee theme is based on recipes inspired by those of our mothers and grandmothers. Occupying one of the gables of the former grand-chalet of Uriage-les-Bains, Le Café A is a unifying place. Built around a generous table d'hôte overlooked by an 80-white opaline chandelier reminiscent of early 20th-century house lamps, the restaurant seats 35, with customers divided between comfortable banquettes, individual tables and a private mezzanine area. The restaurant's roots in the region and its culture have not been forgotten. By leaving certain traces of the former grand-chalet, the Chef has sought to enhance a strong regional past with a modern touch. Like the imposing wall facing the dining room, which reveals the history of this ancient building, revealing itself to visitors like an open book. Adapting to the needs and constraints of our customers by offering them suitable formulas is a question of common sense for Le Café A, which adjusts its proposals to the rhythm of the week: MONDAY TO SATURDAY, A simple lunch/dinner formula with a dish of the day, inspired by market produce, the vegetable garden, the season and new arrivals. SUNDAYS, Café A offers its customers an exceptional 2-course brunch (11 a.m. and 1:15 p.m.), with an all-you-can-eat buffet featuring a wide variety of sweet and savory dishes and seasonal produce, accompanied by an aperitif, glass of wine, 1/2 bottle of water, coffee, herbal tea or hot chocolate. EVERY AFTERNOON, Le Café A is transformed into a veritable tea and coffee room, with a menu of selected teas and coffees, herbal infusions from the house garden, fresh juices and homemade cakes.
