Immerse yourself in a history as you walk from the banks of the river Gardon to Mas Soubeyran, a museum of French Protestantism. You will be able to enjoy far-reaching views onto the Puechs, Mont Aigoual, Mont Liron and, on clear days, even the Alps. From the car park, turn right onto the D 50, cross the Pont des Camisards bridge and turn left towards Le Travès / Paussan. Then head for Mas Soubeyran via La Roquette. At Mas Soubeyran, take the path on the right to reach La Baumelle gully, which leads to the mas (farm) of the same name. Walk past the mas on its right and continue on the track to join up with the road. Turn right onto the road and after 250 m turn left on a path towards La Rouvière. At La Rouvière, turn left onto a fire road (DFCI) and take a path on the left that goes downhill into Roquefeuille gully. Cross the bridge, take the road on the left and then a small path on the right that will lead you back to Mialet.

A beautiful climb that is quite steep towards the end. At the ruiniform blockfield of Les Escorces rocks, continue to the pylon, from where you can discover the surrounding heights: the rocks above Anduze, Pic Saint-Loup, the Mont Liron range, and the top of Mont Aigoual. Walk in the direction of: "Saint Jean du Gard". Then direction “Oppidum de Sueille, 3,1 km”; the first 250m are on the D 907 road. Turn left onto Chemin Albin Mercoiret and stay on it for 600 m (yellow waymarks), then take the cobblestoned path on the right that joins up with the road again. Turn right onto the road, then take the track on the left that turns into a path going uphill through the faïsses to Les Escorces rocks. Be careful: there is no parapet!  Turn left towards the pylon; walk around it on the right to reach a road that you leave after 100 m for a path on the left running along a fence. The path joins up with the road: go downhill on it. At the signpost “Oppidum de Sueille”, continue downhill on the road towards “Saint-Jean du Gard 2.9 km” until you reach Saint-Jean du Gard. This walk takes you to the historical heart of the Cévennes: a rural life as harsh as it was intense, which forged a powerful spirit of resistance.  Signposts will guide you all along this route, as well as yellow painted waymarks. In the description below, the signposted place names and/or directions are given in bold italics between quotation marks:Starting from the car park "Peyrolles - Serre de Clayrac", turn right onto the Départemental road and, 200m later, "La Planque", go downhill on the left on the small road towards "Pont de L'Arénas", "Vallée Obscure" and "Château de vallée obscure". At “Château de vallée obscure” take the path on the right towards "La Jasse", then "Rouvière", and "Col du Briontet". At “col du Briontet”, go towards "Col du Mercou" on a wooded path on your right, which goes uphill between two forestry tracks. At “Col du Mercou”, take the path on your right towards "Soucy".Turn right towards “Pont de l’Arénas” (2), then left towards “La Planque” (1) to return to the main road and the starting car park.

This is one of the least frequented of all the Cévenol valleys! Also one of the best preserved, it invites you to explore, contemplate and recharge your batteries… Learn how to merge into its peacefulness. At "La Planque", turn left downhill onto the small road towards   "Pont de l'Arénas", then continue along the road towards “Vallée Obscure” and “Château de Vallée Obscure”. Take the path on the left below the château, then continue to "La Jasse", then turn left towards “Le Gué”. From there, continue left and climb the steep path — carefully follow the yellow waymarks through the woodland. Once on the ridge, turn right to reach “La Jasse d’Almiras”. Follow the ridge to "La Rouvière", then descend towards “Le Gué” (5) and “Château de Vallée Obscure” (4). Continue along the small road to “Pont de l’Arénas” (2), then turn left towards “La Planque” (1) to return to the main road and the starting car park.

For 4 generations now, this family campsite welcomes you in the heart of the Cevennes between Anduze and Saint Jean du Gard, in the Mialet valley. It is located along the river and has its own private beach. The establishment located at the edge of the Cevennes National Park offers a wide range of activities for the whole family. It has a direct access to the river with a private beach, an aquatic complex of more than 600m² with a swimming pool of 250 m², a heated swimming pool with 4 slides including a kamikaze, an aqualudic space of 250 m² for the youngest with many water games and a new slide with sensation, the Tobbo-jump of 11m high. As for other activities, you will find a multi-sports field, an 18-hole mini golf course, a fitness area, a bowling alley with 12 courts, a games library and a children's playground accessible from the opening of the campsite. Activities for children from 3 to 5 years old and 6 to 10 years old, for teenagers from 11 to 14 years old and 15 to 18 years old as well as sports and leisure activities and big family games are organized in July and August, 6 days a week in our air-conditioned yurt. In high season, evening shows, karaoke, open-air cinema, dancing, themed evenings and bingo are organized. You will also find a bar-restaurant-ice-cream parlour with fresh and local products and a mini-market with newspapers and bread baked on the spot every day. In high season, a pizzeria and a straw hut are present. It is also the ideal starting point for numerous hikes or bike rides, in the mountains or along the Gardon river to discover the Cevennes and the Camisards valley. The animal garden of Mialet is an animal park installed near the Gardon and the Abarines bridge. Come and discover with your family all the animals of the park and its attractions, the time of a pleasant and playful visit in the shade of hundred-year-old trees. The animals of the park: 300 animals of 50 different species: horses, donkeys, goats and miniature sheep in the unique contact park in the South of France, but also alpacas, zebus, kangaroos, ferrets, chinchillas, poultry, ducks, geese, turkeys, parrots, parakeets and exotic birds, etc. During your visit, discover also along the one kilometer long course in the Japanese garden, the electric mini-cars track and the little train of the Far West, a rare model from 1967, unique in the South of France. Climb aboard and enjoy an original moment in its western decor. At the exit of the park, in the smily park, merry-go-round, push-push and giant slide with double bumps for the joy of children. Legend has it that this humpback bridge was built from 1702 to 1704 by Jean Cavalier, a leader of the Protestant Camisard uprising against the Catholic King. And a legend is all it is. It was constructed a decade later, from 1714 to 1718, when Louis XIV's Intendant, a Monsieur de Basville, decided to develop the road network in the Cevennes. The diocese of Alès was responsible for funding a large share of the construction, and the inhabitants of Mialet were forced to participate through work our paying taxes. This shady park, a stone's throw from the city center, on the banks of the Gardon River, is a favorite playground for families with children. A playground welcomes the youngest and the oldest can have fun in the skate park. Children love to go and play at Paulhan Park. They find a playground with squirrel cage, swings, seesaws, slides, to climb, slide, hang and swing under the watchful eye of their parents. The park also has metal ramps for skateboarders, bicycles and scooters. The park's large trees also offer great hide-and-seek opportunities behind their wide trunks. Children love to run around and hide in them. Paulhan Park is the place for families!

The Ruben Saillens Park is the municipal park of St Jean du Gard, it is located Avenue de la Résistance. It is the place of walk and relaxation where the brook of Brion flows. All around the park there is a Cevennes hydraulic complex. The idea for a “Museum of the Wilderness” goes back to 1880, when the Société de l'histoire du protestantisme français launched a subscription to buy the birthplace of the Camisard leader Roland (real name: Pierre Laporte). […] In 1910, the Musée du Désert was created as a memorial site to trace the history of Protestantism from 1685 to 1789 and its fight against the French regime's intolerance. […] It is intended to bear witness to the past and promote awareness of the spiritual and cultural heritage that shaped the Cevenol mentality. Every first Sunday in September, almost 20,000 people gather in the shade of the oaks at Mas Soubeyran to hold a Protestant service – the so-called Gathering in the Wilderness. (Nelly Bernard)

Alongside the paths grows a plant whose name, at least, is known to all those who remember La Fontaine's fable of the Hare and the Tortoise: “Pray take, your senses to restore / A grain or two of hellebore”. Hellebore, also known as dungwort, is toxic – but it does not cure madness as popular belief had it. This member of the buttercup family is evergreen and can be identified in winter by its pale green leaves, which are spear-shaped and palmately lobed. […] Its pale green flower stalk has bracts and dies after flowering; it appears in February to March. It is embellished with five greenish petals with a red edge and ten petals of a rather unpleasant nectary shape. Shepherds hung it in sheepfolds and used it to treat abscesses and sheep scab. Very old mills for producing oil, wool and flour border the Valat de Baumelle gully. Note the mill pond (Occitan: gorga) at the edge of the path and backing onto the mill. The inhabitants of Luziers laid out their vegetable plots on the many terraces you can still see on either side of the path. The uppermost terraces – the “dry gardens”  – were reserved for crops needing little water: broad beans, lentils, peas, etc. Other vegetables were planted on terraces that lay closer to the waterway. They were irrigated using a system of terracotta pipes connected to small basins. (Nelly Bernard)
