On the borders of the Grands Causses, on the edge of the Cévennes, walk the “Garden of Aveyron”: a symphony of majestic landscapes punctuated by a heritage with a remarkable character.From the  Place du Claux, follow the D999 towards Saint-Jean du Bruel. After the war memorial, take the street on the left towards Ambouls. Cross the bridge of La Prade and continue on the road for 50 meters.Turn left on the trail which goes up along the horse club lands. At 1 km, at the crossroad take on the left towards Roc Nantais-Trèves.At the exit of the woods, opposite a large field, and far away the ruins of the farm of Anguiral, take on the right the path towards Œil-de-Bœuf (excavation in a rock).Oblique right, cross a field (be attentive to the marks) and take the stony path which goes down steep slope and reaches the stream of Valettes. Follow it and pass near old calamine ovens. Continue keeping right in the valley and arrive to Saint-Gleys. Cross the hamlet and continue on the road to the left towards Saint-Jean-du-Bruel. At the entrance of the village turn right and cross the old bridge.Go left to discover the center of the village, then return to the bridge. Take the road D999 towards Nant for 500m, then turn left towards Fougayrolles. Cross the hamlet and continue left towards a path which goes up to a cross. Follow right the road which leads to the ruins of Algues Castle. Possibility to go and back to the panorama.Continue on a wide dirt road which goes down to the valley and arrives to the fortified Castelnau farm. Take the D999 on left for 1,2km.Take right the road which crosses the Dourbie river on a submersible bridge. 50m after the bridge, turn left on the road and continue north.Cross the La Prade bridge and return to Nant.

From the pass, continue on the track on 1km then on a small single to go down on the other side of St-Alban. You will arrive near the Romanesque church St-Martin du Vican (12th century).Turn left on 200m then right the road towards the village.

Around Cantobre, a village perched on a promontory of Causse Bégon, a walk in the gorges of Trévezel, whose steep slopes are home to an exceptional biodiversity.From the parking, take the D145 for 380m to reach the village of Cantobre.At the exit of the village, turn left (leave the road) and enter the path that goes into the woods. First narrow and steep, the path becomes more comfortable. Continue for 450 m.At the treatment plant, the path leads to an intersection. Take the path opposite.Continue straight on the path (don’t cross the fording). The path continues with a track to the mill (follow yellows signs).From the mill, take the small road along a stream for 900 m and then goes up towards Cantobre.Turn left and go up the path for 150 m , then turn left again to reach the village of Cantobre.

A very diverse hike through beautiful and changing forests, with rocky stretches and views over the gorges, the river Dourbie, Mont Lingas and Mont St-Guiral. You won't get bored! From the carpark, cross the river Trévezel. Turn left onto a tarred lane, cross a second small bridge, walk for 150 m, and turn right onto a path (signpost for Canayère). By the statue, turn left onto a steep path that leads you among box trees and then through a pine forest to reach a forestry track (turn left towards Canayère). Take this track to get to the forester's house at Canayère. Go past the front of the house, cross the meadow and take the path downhill to reach St-Firmin cave. Continue on this path to get to the intersection with the ONF path way-marked in green (short detour to a viewpoint indicator). Go down to Le Villaret (at the foot of the cliffs is Joulié cave, closed to the public). In Le Villaret, turn right and take the road downhill to return to Trèves.

C'est un sentier en corniche comme on les aime, en belvédère au-dessus des gorges du Trévezel. Ce torrent a profité d'une ligne de faille pour entailler le causse de gorges profondes. Sentier très difficile pour marcheurs confirmés, déconseillé aux familles. The foothills of the Larzac as a backdrop, a landscape of meadows and undergrowth, a paceful walk along a laughing stream that irrigates the country of Nant, called "the garden of Aveyron".From the car park, take the road on the left towards Mas du Pré and cross the pretty bridge (you can see the hamlet on the left).At the iron cross, turn right on a wide dirt track which successively runs along meadows and fields. Then it shrinks to enter the wood. The Durzon River is nearby.At the intersection, leave the small tuff bridge on the right (private property of the descendants of Victor Hugo) and turn off towards left. 200m further, at the junction, take the right path along the river and continue for 800m to reach the spring.From the source, cross the Durzon on the concrete footbridge and take, at the bottom of the meadow, the path that goes up on the right towards Mas de Pommiers. Then follow the asphalt road to the starting point.From the point 4: you can return to the starting point by the same route as on the way out.

These two trails, located on the small Causse de Canayère, offer you a fabulous trip back in time, at the scale of geological times but also, at the scale of the occupation of the site by the man, from the prehistory up to 'nowadays. Ces deux sentiers, situés sur le petit causse de Canayère, vous proposent un fabuleux voyage dans le temps, à l'échelle des temps géologiques mais aussi, à l'échelle de l'occupation du site par l'homme, depuis la préhistoire jusqu'à nos jours. Dénivelé important, bonnes chaussures recommandées. Sentier de découverte D’est en ouest, il parcourt près de cent millions d’années. Il passe des terrains calcaires, déposés là pendant l’ère secondaire par une mer peu profonde, au socle schisteux surgi au Primaire. Il longe des failles le long desquelles des terrains se sont affaissés de plusieurs centaines de mètres, il surplombe un cours d’eau creusant ses gorges depuis près de trois millions d’années. Il permet aussi de deviner, sous ce sol calcaire, les kilomètres de galeries, les puits et les cavités forés par l’eau infiltrée.Les différentes haltes vous permettront également d’appréhender l’influence de l’homme sur son environnement et sur le paysage, et son évolution dans un passé récent, en particulier le passage de milieux ouverts agricoles et habités (hameau, terrasses de culture, moulin, four à chaux, etc.) à des milieux boisés au cours des 150 dernières années. Plusieurs points de vue ponctuent le cheminement, dont ce- lui, particulièrement spectaculaire, au-dessus des gorges du Trévezel . Located in the oldest area of the village, this roman bridge with a single arch spans the Dourbie River.Dating from the 13th century, it was the main bridge of the village until the 18th century. In the neighborhood of the old bridge, manholes still exist, hiding places dating from religion wars.

The ovens of Valettes were inaugurated in 1905, the concession having been obtained the same year by the Metal Mining Company of Aveyron. Its perimeter extends between Saint-Jean du Bruel and Causse-Bégon and the works concern "La Gardiole", the Valettes (above the ovens), "Les Baldy" and "L'Yfer" above the brook called Saint-Gleys between Barjac and the confluence of Valettes. The main ore is constituted by calamine containing 35 to 40% zinc. The five furnaces are intended for enrichment by the so-called reduction method.As the research progresses, the results soon turn out to be disappointing, because if from 1901 to 1904, 800 tons of calamine are extracted, 390 tons in 1905, 435 tons in 1906, it is treated only 160 tons in 1909. Work must stop in 1914 and will never be resumed.After their abandonment, the five ovens will serve as a quarry. The three openings of the ovens are each coated with two rows of refractory bricks. The village of Ambouls, municipality of Nant, built on the right bank of the Dourbie River, would date from the installation of the Romans in the area of Nant.The hillock of Ambouls peak (641 m high) was fortified in the Iron Age from 700 or 600 BC., a clear sign of an older occupation.On the peak or “gallo-Roman oppidum”, pieces of pottery were discovered 40 years ago and are preserved at the Museum of Montrozier.On the east side we can still see todays the entrance of the “grotte des fées” (cave of the fairies), where Ernest André discovered in 1913 human bones dating from around 4500 BC.Ambouls is one of those agricultural hamlets, emptied by the rural exodus, but which recovers now a new soul, thanks to the city dwellers who come back and restore the houses.Some houses are typical with the external stone staircase, the porch and under the stable which opens on a wide arched porch.You can also discover an original fireplace above an old bread oven and a stone cross from 1710.

The city of Nant obtained in 1369 the right to have fairs and markets, right granted by the Duke of Anjou. In the 15th century, the privileges of the city are confirmed: weekly markets are held there, 4 annual fairs are conceded, one of which lasted 3 days on November, 2, 3 and 4.The covered market was rebuilt in 1706 an 1707, the first stone was laid on March, 13, 1706.It is a squat, rectangular construction (30 m long and 8 m wide) with 12 pillars supporting the vault, interconnected by a semicircular arch.On a pillar, a plaque commemorates the events of August 14 and 15, 1944 when two Nant’s civilians and seven maquisards from “Maquis des Corsaires” were shot.Listed in the inventory of Historic Monuments since April 13, 1944.

The church Saint-Etienne de Cantobre, attached in 1135 to the abbey of Nant, became parish at the end of the 12th century. Only the apse with three sides, lit by three windows, and the span of the choir are Romanesque. The nave and side chapels were rebuilt in the 16th century. The bell tower houses a bronze bell from 1630, it is on the list of objects classified M.H. November 5, 1943.

From the village of Cantobre, you can admire on one side the panorama on the Gorges of Dourbie and Trevezel and on the other side on the Dourbie Valley.

Since 2012, a project to reintroduce bearded vultures has been launched in the Grands Causses with the aim of strengthening the French population of bearded vultures. Two sites were selected to let the birds go, one in Meyrueis, in the Jonte gorges and the other in the municipality of Nant, on the Trévezel Gorges.The bearded vulture is one of the 4 species present in France and one of the largest raptors in Europe.It is a scavenger and feeds on bone remains taken from ungulate carcasses (sheep, goats, chamois ...).

Located at the foot of the hamlet, on the Dourbie River, you can see the mill of Cantobre. In the past, it was a mill for grinding wheat, nowadays it is a micro power station. It is fed by a canal, which brings the water of the Dourbie retained upstream by a dam. A fishway has been set against the dam, allowing them to go up the river even if there is no more water flowing on the river in summer.

Come and relax on the edge of this magnificent reservoir in the heart of the village of Trèves. It's a great place to swim (unsupervised), picnic and relax. Water reservoir located in the commune of Trèves. It is fed by the Trèvezel river, which rises in the Cévennes on the oceanic slopes of Mont Aigoual. The river forms its bed in the Gorges du Trèvezel as far as the village of Trèves, before continuing on to flow into "La Dourbie". A site where bathing water quality is regularly monitored.
