This itinerary covers the phase when the Allied offensives converged towards what was to prove the most decisive battlefield during the Battle of Normandy: the Falaise pocket. It follows in the footsteps of the British, Canadian and Polish armies on their advance southwards during operation Totalize, during which they joined the American and French units. After driving the Germans to the south of Caen, the Allies decided to break through towards Falaise. Totalize was launched at 23:00 on the 7th of August 1944. Four armoured columns, comprised of 400 tanks headed across the plain, guided by tracer shells and projectors. Given the staunch resistance put up by the Germans, the offensive was brought to a halt on the 11th of August. It was followed by operation Tractable, from the 14th to the 18th of August, the date that marked Falaise’s liberation. Thanks to Caen University’s Canopé network for developing this itinerary.

From Caen, follow the canal and cross the river via Pegasus Bridge, a strategic point of the D-Day landings, and then follow the water to Merville-Franceville by taking the Vélomaritime cycle route. No horses allowed.

Place Albert Marie is home to the 12th-century church of St-Martin. It was listed as a historic monument on January 24, 1927. It is characterized by its two architectural styles, Romanesque and Gothic. The church was damaged during the Battle of Normandy, particularly on July 4. Restorations took place in the 1950s, including the installation of new stained-glass windows.

The D-Day Wings Museum is the only museum in Normandy devoted to D-Day aircraft and air operations (apart from airborne operations). Yet mastery of the skies was essential to the D-Day Landings and the Battle of Normandy. You will learn a great deal about the air missions of D-Day, and about the aircraft and personnel of the air force. The museum also aims to show you all the aircraft used on D-Day. You'll be able to sit in a fighter cockpit, climb into a bomber turret, and so on - all real-life experiences that will leave you with lasting, tangible memories of what it was like to fight in the air.

The church is in the 2nd period Romanesque style. The nave dates from the 11th century, and the tower rises above it, ending in a gambrel roof. The historian M. de CAUMONT tells us that, around 1836, he discovered an 11th or 12th century inscription on the lintel of a western door inside what was once the choir, stating that the building was dedicated to Saint Vigor on the 10th day of April. According to this historian, this inscription was destroyed during building work in 1846. Inside the church, there is a stone altar. It forms a semicircular dome supported by 4 columns with carved capitals. Its artistic merit is debatable, but what is indisputable is the sense of religious faith that gave rise to it. In 1857, many AUTHIE workers, stonemasons and sculptors wanted an altar worthy of their village church, so they came in droves, refusing to accept any pay and even feeding themselves at their own expense. Begun in the latter half of January, the altar was completed in 1 month and solemnly inaugurated the following year, on January 28, 1858.

IMEC - Abbey of Our Lady of the Ardennes Founded in the 12th century, steeped in history, Ardenne Abbey benefited from long-term restoration and is now home to the Institute of Contemporary Publishing Archives’ collections and activities. The abbey church, converted into a huge library, offers researchers the calm and tranquillity once offered by the monastic buildings. The vast farmyard, gardens, tithe barn and press now host events, colloquiums and exhibitions, and offer a place of residence for research and writing. Property of the Regional Council and a listed historic monument, the abbey received the prestigious label of Heritage Site for Culture, awarded to historic monuments that are initiators of unique cultural projects. The IMEC’s action and vocation benefit from support from the French Ministry of Culture and Communication (Normandy Regional Directorate for Cultural Affaires) and from the Normandy Regional Council. During temporary exhibitions, the site is open to the public from Tuesday to Sunday, from 2 to 6pm.

Imec - Ardenne Abbey An abbey for reading, writing and dreaming Caen?s third abbey (12th century), now restored as a historic site of the Battle of Normandy, is home to the Institut Mémoires de l?édition contemporaine (Imec). The association preserves the archives of major publishing houses and magazines, as well as the manuscripts of major writers, philosophers and artists. A center for research and literary creation, the Imec also offers a year-round program of free cultural events (conferences, exhibitions, events, tours). Its splendid abbey church, converted into a research library, has become a unique workspace accessible to all, by reservation only. Take note! When the sun comes back out, Imec will open a café renowned for its choice of products and the quality of its welcome, in a majestic and inspiring setting. Temporary exhibition 2025: Fragments du rêve, June 6 to November 30 The secret of dreams lies in archives. Archives are the world's largest repository of dreams, an inexhaustible source of stories hastily scribbled in the early hours of the morning, testimony to the strange necessity of losing nothing of our dreams.

The Maladrerie quarries were exploited from the 17th to the 19th century, and were reopened in the 1980s to build the Memorial. From June 6, 1944, the city of Caen came under heavy bombardment. Residents of certain neighborhoods took refuge in quarries and underground structures in the Caen area. In the Maladrerie district, over five hundred people took shelter in the quarries until Caen was liberated. Access to the quarries was via shafts equipped with ladders. No longer in use, the quarries have recently been refurbished to enable visitors to enjoy the site in complete safety (booking required). Following a well-lit, signposted path, you'll discover the large chambers used to extract this world-renowned stone.

Part of the former seminary, the building is the property of the Bishopric of Bayeux-Lisieux.
