D-Day Wings Museum: Take control of history!
The D-Day Wings Museum is dedicated to aviation during the Second World War. Located in Bretteville-Sur-Odon, our museum is housed in a hangar built in 1937 by the French and used as workshops for the Luftwaffe during the war. The only hangar in the neighbourhood to have withstood Allied bombing, traces of the fighting can still be seen on the ceiling.
Did you know? Although the Normandy landings took place on the beaches, they were first won in the skies. In Bretteville-sur-Odon, the D-Day Wings Museum offers much more than a visit: it offers total immersion in the daily lives of the heroes of the air.
A unique immersion in Normandy: The ‘Full Experience’
Forget traditional museums where you can only look but not touch. Here, childhood dreams become reality. With the ‘Full Experience’ ticket, you can cross the security barrier and enter the intimate world of war machines.
The Spitfire cockpit: Slip into the cramped cockpit of the legendary British fighter plane. Feel the extreme concentration required by RAF pilots to manoeuvre this ‘legend of the skies’.
The B-17 turret: Test your courage by taking a seat in the belly turret of an American bomber. With 360° visibility, no parachute and confined space, experience the feeling of total isolation felt by the gunners in 1944.
The C-45 (Beechcraft): Take control of this legendary twin-engine aircraft used for bomber training and cargo transport. So elegant, it was even featured in the film De Gaulle (2020)!
The Bofors Anti-Aircraft Gun: Take control of this formidable piece of artillery. Electrified and mobile, it gives you an understanding of the technical expertise required to protect the skies over London and Allied ships.
The latest addition: Climb aboard the Mirage V, the flagship of French aeronautics and the ultimate reconnaissance aircraft, for a leap into the more contemporary history of French wings.
A place steeped in history: Hangar 1937
The museum comes to life in a historic hangar at the former Caen-Carpiquet base. Built by the French in 1937, it was occupied by the Luftwaffe to launch its Stukas against England, then liberated after fierce fighting by the Canadians in July 1944. Look up: the shell marks on the ceiling are authentic scars from the Battle of Normandy.
