Discover Longchaumois, a hidden gem in Jura, Franche-Comté

Staying on the Longchaumois plateau overlooking the Bienne, this rather long but relatively easy tour links together the hamlets which always provide a route to return to the village in order to shorten the circuit. From the Information Point, near the Post Office (“La Poste”) in LONGCHAUMOIS () , head to “la grande Rue”, turn right and then left towards the Cheese Dairy (blue MTB waymarking no. 28), to take the road to Le Nid. Continue on the road to the left and head to ORCIERES via Maison Gauthier, Route d’Orcières and Froide Fontaine.The road to the left crosses over the Pissevieille rivulet.  Ascend the path to the right towards Sous le Daim, before reaching the BIKE PARK DEPARTURE POINT (BIKE PARC DÉPART).Follow the D 69 to the left, and at Les Combes, head up the white path to the right. Head past “en Pissard” and head to la Combe de Servagna. The Road to the left at the bottom of the combe (an old sandpit is on your right) will lead you to Adrets des Riasses. Continue straight on the forest path before coming to Les Os.Branch off left towards Tavaillonnette. (To quickly reach Longchaumois, continue straight taking the path and then the road). Follow a trail to the right which borders the road, and then turn right before left onto a grassy path that will lead you to a crossroads. Cross over and follow the road until you come to ROSSET.Follow the road to your left which, after a short ascent, heads down to Novet le Bas. Turn right and follow this rolling path until you come to the Le Cul de Sac hamlet. Head up the road to the left and follow the road via les Séchets to reach La Vigne.Continue straight on this road for 350 m and take a grassy path to the left which heads around the back of La Ruchette. Continue until you reach the Les Adrets crossroads.Continue straight for 500 m and join up with a road that heads down to the D 69. Cross with care, head between the houses and down the path and road that will lead you to BAPTAILLARDS. Continue on the road through the hamlet before taking a sharp left turn before the last house, following a stony path. When you reach a path, turn right, head between the Souillet farms and continue past Sur le Villard. Head down the road to Le Nid. Enter LONGCHAUMOIS via the road to your left.

A walk accessible to all departing from a village in the Bienne valley and enabling hikers to discover the valley's viewpoints and few dry grasslands along pleasant paths and trails. From TANCUA, the trail (yellow waymarking) follows the D 26 towards Les Mouillés for 50 m before descending to the left towards les Tillettes. At "rue de la Forge", turn left and head past the last houses named "les Cuisiniers" (the Cooks). The path heads downwards in an even slope bordered by ash hedges. In three main bends, it passes through former pastures. The trail heads into a wooded area and leads to a small stream. Continue along the trail in the same direction and head past a second stream before coming to The pasture. A winding and steep trail (white and red waymarking) heads up the meadow. Follow the trail's many bends and exit onto the road, heading back up to the village. At "Route de la Bienne", return to (yellow waymarking) the Town Hall through "rue de la Bienne" (from Morez to Saint-Claude, villages were built on the eastern slope of the Bienne valley, basking in the sunlight and making use of the small flat).

From the coolness of the gorges of the Forebay of la Chaille to the belvedere of the Maquisards on the Morez water gap, you will journey along a relatively easy and varied trail, through a mix of forest environments, geology and history. From the village centre, the trail heads up through the village (white and red waymarking) towards the Forebay of la Chaille via the D 25. At Abbé Barthelet, continue and follow the road to the left that descends to Prémanon d’Amont. After a steep descent, a forest path will lead you to the walkway over the Forebay of la Chaille. The waterfall can be reached within 10 mins to your right by following GR® 5, at the foot of a former mill. The trail, that is rocky and muddy in some places, branches off to the left under the cover of forest to reach Sous le Saut and Le Bonzon. Head down to the path to your left (yellow waymarking) until you reach PERROUD BRIDGE. Cross the recently restored bridge and head up a very steep trail. A narrow and steep trail to your left opens onto a gravel path and crosses over an intermittent stream. Head up to the right to Sur le Bief (house). The trail then turns right on a good path, crosses the D 25 and comes to Sur le Belvédère. The BELVEDERE OF THE MAQUISARDS is 5 minutes away to your right across the D 25. Returning to Sur le Belvédère, head opposite you up the old "route de Morez", towards Prémanon, with the Chez Jeankessis farms on your left. Without ever changing direction, heading due south, follow a road for 150 m, and then a path for 400 m. The trail crosses another road behind the hamlet "Sur la truffe" before exiting onto the D 25 at the entrance of PREMANON.

The telecombi is a teleport with seats and cabins. The Télécombi du Mont Rond, coming from the Col de la Faucille, allows you to access the crests of the Haute Chaîne du Jura; it lifts you from 1323m to 1543m altitude. Once there, the hiker is only 30mn walk away to reach the Grand Mont Rond (1596m), and 2h for the Colomby de Gex (1689m). 2 blue pistes for all mountain biking are marked from the top of the télécombi. In winter, it allows snowshoe enthusiasts to reach the summits with ease and to enjoy the ridges. Please respect the regulations set up by the Natural Reserve of the Jura Range.

The Monts Jura offers the ideal altitude for hiking between 900 and 1723 m. There are marked and maintained trails waiting for you. Since Lélex, the gondola lift La Catheline brings you to the crests of the Haute Chaîne du Jura; climbing from 900m to 1450m altitude. When you get there, you are only an hour and a half walk away from the Crêt de la Neige (172 3m), the highest point in the Jura. At Lélex and Crozet, both gondolas are equipped for MTB riding in summer. Both the Catheline and the Fierney allow mountain bikers to go back up easily and quickly in order to better enjoy the descent on both sides of the mountain! Please note: electric mountain bikes are not allowed in the Catheline gondola. It enables snowshoe enthusiasts to reach the summits easily and enjoy the crests in winter. In summer, downhill MTB can be practised thanks to the 2 gondolas, Catheline and Fierney, enabling you to get back up easily and quickly to fully enjoy the descent on both sides of the mountain! Longchaumois is one of the villages considered the most representative of the High Jura in terms of traditional typology: a village centre with attached houses joined at the gable that stretch along the main road, and a scattering of several small hamlets and isolated houses across the municipal land. From the front of the church, which dates back to the 16th century, you can see how the vegetable gardens are organised behind the houses.

Likely built during the 16th century, the gothic-style Longchaumois church was competed or made bigger during the 17th century as attested to by the date engraved on the stone above the entrance gate (1631). The church underwent several other changes at the end of the 19th century, including the upgrading of the facades and the opening of bays. The church’s uniqueness is provided by the sleek polygonal arrow topped with four bell turrets as well as by its wooden polychrome sculptures, some of which are classed as historical monuments and which date back to the 16th century. The traditional High Jura farm housed hay, wood provisions, animals and people, all under the same roof, with the latter benefitting from the heat provided by the former. Insulation was provided by the hay stored away for the winter, with the principle of the high barn. However, water supply problems were more difficult due to the karstic nature of the widely cracked underground, and water sources were often lacking. Works were therefore launched, starting with the cistern. They continued with the assembly of the “column” framework which would make up the house’s skeleton. The roof was then built with wooden shingles (small spruce tiles). The gutters on the roof served to collect water to fill the cistern. Lastly, fat lime mortar could then be made to build up the walls.

"T'es la cuison" or "t'es souci" or "t'es inquiet" are phrases in Patois, a French local dialect. They are said to be how Claude Prost came to get his war nickname Capitaine Lacuzon. Born in Sous le Daim in Longchaumois around 1607, Lacuzon is a historical figure of the Franche-Comté’s resistance to its attachment to France, which occurred under Louis XIV in 1674. A hero in Xavier de Montepin’s novel “Le Médecin des Pauvres”, Capitaine Lacuzon is still a controversial character to many historians. Bordered by two low stone walls, the “vy” or vie” is the path or route used to guide livestock from the farm to the pasture. A mark left on the landscape by the past, “vies” and their low walls are home to a well-adjusted biodiversity. Its cracks contain real microhabitats and are beneficial to species such as the common wall lizard and the goldmoss stonecrop, a succulent plant with leaves full of reserves.

Born from the ingenuity of master carpenters in a frontier land with a dark past and a difficult climate, the “grenier fort” - here in the “Longchaumois” style - is a testament to the wood civilisation having marked the Jura mountain up until the 18th century. Cereals, food, clothes, precious objects, tools and writings were stored away from the fires that could ravage homes and far from rodents and jealous eyes. In Rosset, this grenier fort was turned into a “book box” which is always open.

The south-west facade of High-Jura houses are most exposed to the weather and are given special treatment. The galvanised sheet panel system (dipped in zinc) is referred to as “sliding” was developed by local tinsmiths. This system specific to the Grandvaux area spread significantly during the early 20th century across the High-Jura. From the 1930s, a new procedure allowed to complement the undulated sheets with stamped figures (losanges). Sheets were not always preferred as cladding materials, yet today they are one of the elements contributing towards the sector’s architectural uniqueness. At the turn of the century, the peregrine falcon was known to nest in all regions offering suitable rocky environments, with cliffs being its favourite nesting place. The département of the Jura alone was home to around 60 couples during the 1940s. But their population soon declined and dropped to only 3 couples in 1968. Thanks to efforts to protect the species (awareness, biotope protection order), their numbers have now improved and there are now around 50 couples within the High-Jura Park.

The viewpoint opens out over the valley of the Bienne, Valfin and the Jura mountains, and offers an interesting view of the Jura’s layers.

The Mill’s Belvedere, on the edge of the valley, offers an overview of nearly all of the Abbaye lake. From here, visitors can learn about how the landscape around the lake has evolved throughout the centuries (interpretive sign).
