Pass the junction of La Vialette (calvary, cobbled watering palce).400m further, turn left on a track.Turn off left and head to D23 and the pinewoods (follow the signs), walk around the pinewoods on the track by the right.At the picnic area, take the marked path to the west to exit the woods and join the D23 at the cobble watering place. Take the road to the left to return to Viala-du-Pas-de-Jaux.

Heritage wise: the granary-tower of the Viala-du-Pas-de-Jaux. Landscape wise: the sensational cirque of St-Paul-des-Fonts. Two unique sites that make this crossing of the causse an exceptional hike.From the tower, take the small road in direction of Mas Baldy on 150 meters, then turn left on a wide farm road.Before the first important fork, turn right. After the cobbled watering place (“lavogne”), take the direction of Mas Baldy. In the hamlet, continue on the small road that draws a bend to the left on 800 meters.At the exit of a bend, veer right on a path that meets a hallow path lined with boxwood hedges. It leads to the heights of the cirque of Saint-Paul-des-Fonts (view on the whole cirque and village). Go down the gravel path that zigzags on the wooded slope. Cross over the stream and continue towards the center of the village of Saint-Paul des Fonts (return).100 meters before the church, climb left to the tank, then continue along the path that rises in laces towards the plateau (panorama of St. Paul and the Annoux Valley).On the causse (view on the Vialette farm, vestige of the old domain dependent of the Commandery of Sainte-Eulalie-de-Cernon), turn left on the road for 500 meters, then go on the right track.1 kilometer before the D23 road, turn left and head towards the pine woods (follow the signs). Walk around the pine wood to the right.At the picnic area, take the path to go out of the wood and meet on west the D23 road, at the cobbled watering place.  Take the D23 road to the left to return to Viala du Pas de Jaux.

On paths taken by the shepherds, on the footsteps of the Templars, explore the Larzac Causse to this white cross from which a superb panorama on the Tournemire cirque unfolds.From the park car, get to the village.From the tower of Viala-du Pas-de-Jaux, head north and follow the GR71C for 200m.At the wayside cross, turn off towards left, follow a track in the middle of the boxwoods which, after 1km, joins to “La Grande Passade”. Continue northwest towards the plateau.  Walk along a fence to reach a junction on the edge of the cliffs.Turn left and continue walking on the top of cliffs until the cross of Gréponac (beautiful views on the Tournemire Cirque).From the cross, head east to get to the road D23. Take it for 800m.Turn right in operating path towards the cross of “Plo de la Lavogne”. After the cobbled-watering place, turn off left.Before D23, turn right and follow a dirt track that gets to a small road. Take it on the left in direction of the village of Viala to reach the starting point.

Following drailles (pathways used for the seasonal transhumance) and making your way through buissières (narrow passages between two rows of box trees) will allow you to experience the traditional routes of pastoralism. A hiking circuit providing you with the opportunity to discover an unusual small heritage building: la quille du berger.Take the path that goes on the left towards N.E. and carry on about 1.5 km along a beautiful “bouissière” (a narrow passage defined by two rows of box trees) an ancient path which was used to connect Mascourbe to Nonenque.The view of the plateau emerges and the path turns to the right, going S.E. alongside a fence. Walk to the edge of the plateau.Head towards the southwest among box trees and oaks. The path runs slightly uphill and provides very nice views over the Annou vale and the Nonenque abbey. The trail leads you out of the woodland.Keep on strolling along the edge of the plateau and enjoy the scenic view over the Sorgue valley and the surrounding hills and plateaus (Guilhaumard, Escandorgue, Espinouse, monts de Lacaune). Reach “the Shepherds Tower”, which is a very unusual stone building. Keep on walking along the edge of the plateau for about 700 m.Do not take left the path that runs downhill towards the Nonenque vale, but instead walk away from the plateau to take a track on your right that runs along to a path, that turns into a “bouissière” which leads to the hamlet of Mascourbe

From the Cistercian Fort of St-Jean d’Alcas, a walk that illustrates the contrast of the pre-causses: first the crossing of the arid plateau, then the immersion in the cool Verzolet valley.In front of the fort, go down the cobblestone street and turn left immediately. After 200 m, take right to reach a wide path. Take it on left on 2 km until the stream of Versol.  Cross over the footbridge. Pass in front of the "Moulin de Gauty” (old mill).Go up on the plateau by a narrow path. Follow left a wide track direction south-west that joins the hamlet of Hermelix (to see nearby a dolmen, a “lavogne” (cobbled watering place), a fountain).In the hamlet, pass an old stone cross, turn left and continue on a track that goes down to the stream.At the crossroad, turn left and follow the creek on the right bank. Continue on the small shaded path to Moulin de Gauty.Go back to Saint-Jean d’Alcas by the same way as to go.

This hike which provides some amazing contrasts joins up with the Mascourbe agro-pastoral plateau, then runs down into the pleasant Sorgues valley and eventually ascends the forested mountain towards Sylvanès.Walk along the St Jean d’Alcas fort by heading west.At the first intersection take left a small descending road. The road then runs uphill. Leave the right road and in a left hand curve take opposite the first bouissière in the direction of Mascourbe via the dolmens.Soon you will make out on your right a cazelle in good condition. A bit further on, the path runs across a cultivated field and nearby, the beautiful building of Ramondenc is worth seeing. The path rises on the Causses and reaches the 2 dolmens of Mascourbes.   Enjoy the beautiful view over the Lévezou, the Larzac, the Escandorgue, and the Montagne Noire. As you reach a small road, take it on your left to walk past the Borie which is an ancient farm of the Hospitaller Commandery in St Félix. At the signboard indicating Mascourbe, just before the first house, take left into the bouissière which leads to the plateau.At the junction with a trail, take the trail to the right. 500 m further on the trail reaches a power line, fork to the left to come up to the stone cross of Mascourbe which overlooks the Sorgues valley. Walk by the main trail down to the bottom of the Cantillergues dale.Just before entering the village of St Félix, the trail turns into a sunken path that runs to the centre of the village. St Félix is an ancient Hospitaller Commandery and has kept evidences of its past: fountain, washing place, St Jean gate, battlements, covered passages, heritage house and 13th century Old bridge. From the ancient inn, take the calade (road paved with cobblestone) that runs down to gardens and the Sorgues river. Cross the bridge over the river and take the small road to the right towards St Caprazy for approximately 700 m, then in a left curve take right the path that leads to St Caprazy (ancient medieval hamlet). The path crosses a first trail, then a second one just before joining the Vareilhes farm.Before reaching Vareilhes take left into the splendid bouissière that goes up to the Loubière. Once you’ve reached the Loubiètre pass, take the trail to your right and immediately after walk downhill to the            left to reach the Bâtisse farm. Walk down to the right to reach the D540 after the Mas Nau and take right that road for 500 m.Before the small car park, take a track which starting point is not clearly visible and which runs down after a curve on the left side of the road, throughout a field first, then along a hedge. Ford the Vernhes brook. Reach the Combalou hamlet, walk downhill to the right to join the D540. After the bridge take the road to the left, pass through the hamlet of Rigal before reaching Sylvanès

Saint-Jean-d’Alcas Fort, a Cistercian jewel is the starting point for a trip back in time and an exploration of the Mascourbe plateau, along dolmens and evidences of agro-pastoralism.From St-Jean d’Alcas fort, walk along the protective wall heading to the West, then carry on along the road. At the first intersection walk downhill to the left and keep walking on the small road. In a left curve, let a road marker indicating the direction of Mascourbe via the Puech and 50 m after take a “bouissière” (box hedges). After approximately 1 km, cross the road that links Saint-Jean- d’Alcas to Saint-Félix de Sorgues and continue through the “bouissière”.The track leads to a field, walk around it to the right, then tread across it up to a trail. Carry on along that trail to the right. After approximately 450 m, leave the trail on the left to make a short 100 m round trip to the dolmen des Places.At the next intersection of trails take the one that runs down to the left. After 350 m, get through the door of the stock grid, walk along the fence up to a sheepfold. Go through the gate (close it properly) and carry on to the right of the fence. The path continues Southward. At the signpost of a path intersection, turn right towards Mascourbe.Go through another stock grid, then continue to the right towards Mascourbe via the 2 km long "buissière" which is the ancient path linking the chartreuse de Nonenque with Mascourbe. At the exit of the "buissière", turn to the right on the trail.At the junction with the road take it to the right, walk past the Borie du Commandeur, and shortly after take for 200m the small ascending road to the left. At the marker to your right, head towards Saint-Jean d’Alcas.The path runs alternately through a typical caussenard landscape and cultivated areas to reach the two dolmens in Mascourbe. You will enjoy some beautiful panoramas towards the Larzac, the Combalou and the Levézou. As you walk down to St-Jean d’Alcas, you pass close to the beautiful Ramondenc farm.As you get close to St-Jean d’Alcas you will notice on the left side a well preserved cazelle. So this type offers the advantage of forming a passage that resists the trampling of sheep, and the gentle slope of the surrounding area limits the risk of slipping and falling of the animals. It is supplied by rainwater.

This is a dry-stone construction called Quille or Tour de berger (Shepherd's Tower), on which shepherds used to stand to watch over their flocks. These towers are also a form of artistic expression of the shepherds, in which the shape of a cone, is superimposed on the piles of stones resulting from destoning.  Some of them are built in gneiss or schist and can be seen on the Lévezou plateau.

The Lord of Tournemire gave to the Templars knights the lands of Viala du Pas de Jaux in 1150. In the 12th and 13th centuries, the Viala consisted of a few farms.After 1312, when the Hospitallers took possession of the Templars’ property, they decided to create in this place a village and for that they built farm buildings, managed by the brothers of the order. They constructed for them a dwelling and a church dedicated to St-Jean-Baptiste, the patron of the Hospitallers.Until 1430, the inhabitants of Viala du Pas de Jaux and the surroundings took refuge in Ste-Eulalie de Cernon during the periods of insecurity which occurred on the Larzac. Because of the high distance between the two village, the inhabitants asked the authorization to the Grand Prior of Saint Gilles, to build a fortified tower to be able to take refuge inside with their possessions. This is the first fortification built on the plateau.Today the 30 meters high tower has been restored. The vaulted ground floor, the five floors, its terrace and the dwelling dating from the 14th century are now accessible.

Because of the high distance between the two village, the inhabitants asked the authorization to the Grand Prior of Saint Gilles, to build a fortified tower to be able to take refuge inside with their possessions. This is the first fortification built on the plateau.Today the 30 meters high tower has been restored. The vaulted ground floor, the five floors, its terrace and the dwelling dating from the 14th century are now accessible.

The Mascourbe dolmens are parts of the ”Treilles” group. This name comes from the cave located next to the Treilles farm in Saint-Paul des Fonts where these Grands Causses “builders” hail from. They were also famous for working with copper and for their astonishing trepanations (making small openings into the skull). There are at least three dolmens located in Mascourbe.Not much is left of this ruined dolmen apart from two pieces of the covering slab and a fragment of a sidestone lying flat on the ground.
