Hiking trail "La Salvetat". This circuit is situated at 750 m altitude on a wooded, semi-shaded plateau and offers a remarkable view. It is easy and has very little tarmac. You will walk along a coniferous wood and find a deciduous forest (beech, oak, birch). Halfway along the route, you will see the village of La Salvetat, with its restored houses, its church and its Commandery of the Order of Malta. In the keystone, you will notice the eight-pointed Cross of Malta. This pleasant hike starts on the road from Boisset to Aurillac, near the place called Concasty, and takes you along the banks of the Bouzaï stream, which you will cross twice at the Cassan and Boissadel bridges. Hiking trail "Le Pénard". Saint-Mamet is a pretty, renovated village of granite houses with slate roofs. It has a 12th and 14th century Gothic church with an 18th century altarpiece. You can also walk in a pretty hardwood between Pénard and Fordamon. Hiking trail "Le Puy Saint-Laurent". A pretty village of granite houses with slate roofs, Saint-Mamet has a 12th and 14th century Gothic church with an 18th century altarpiece. This easy route is relatively shaded. At point 1, if you turn left (off the route), you can go to Puy Saint-Laurent (771 m): chapel and circular panorama over the Aurillac basin, the Mounts of Cantal, Lake Saint-Étienne-Cantalès and the neighbouring departments (toposcope). Hiking trail "Le Rêtre". From the very heart of the village of Saint-Mamet and all along this path, you will notice the architecture of the houses in the villages you pass through and the beautiful coniferous and deciduous forests (beech, oak, birch and chestnut trees). Between the forest of Fargues and Vaurs: general view of the commune of Vitrac. You will pass near the pond of Vic, a green setting near the town. Mountain bike route "The Marcolès loop". The paper version of the hiking map is available from our Information Points for €0.50. In the heart of the Châtaigneraie Cantalienne, a family and rolling circuit around the medieval village of Marcolès and its remarkable architectural heritage (Departure: Parking de l'An 2000). Discover the outskirts of Marcolès and Saint-Antoine via a mountain bike route rich in shaded forest areas. Magnificent views of the surrounding countryside punctuate this generally very rolling route.

Mountain bike route "From River Gour to the carriérous". The paper version of the hiking map is available from our Information Points. Starting out from the small, characterful village of Marcolès, this loop will allow you to discover the rich architectural and natural heritage of the area around the historic village. This route, with its varied sections, takes you to the market town of Vitrac via a number of wooded and shady areas. Although accessible to all, this route has a few sections that will delight mountain bikers, with some winding descents and a sometimes marked relief. Although the majority of the route is through woodland, you'll also appreciate the pretty views over the surrounding countryside, right in the heart of the Châtaigneraie Cantalienne.

Hiking trail "The goat path". Fortified as early as the 12th century, the village of Marcolès was built in the 15th century in the centre of a circular enclosure which was entered through two gates opening onto the Rue Longue. Along this street are some beautiful Renaissance facades. The carriérous, picturesque lanes, will lead you to the church of St. Martin, an imposing building in the southern Gothic style which also contains a rich statuary. This path will lead you to discover the surroundings of Marcolès, in the shade of the forest. La Méridienne verte ("Green Meridian"): if you're familiar with our country's roads and motorways, have you ever wondered what's behind this enigmatic signage?

A refreshing break on this chaos of rocks disturbing the course of the Rance between Vitrac and Marcolès. An easy 15 mn walk (hiking shoes recommended) takes you to the site. Over the centuries, the swirling waters have carved out remarkable rimstones (or gours, basins in the rock filled with natural geological water). Since then, the popular imagination has had its way and the legend of the “Devils’Hole” was born. Parking nearby and picnic tables available.

The church of Saint-Jean-la-Salvetat, rebuilt in the 12th century, is part of a former Commandery of the Knights of Malta. Two chapels were added to the original building, a simple rectangle. The church has a cross-vaulted choir and a bell gable rebuilt in the 17th century. On the keystone of the chancel is the famous eight-pointed cross of their order, the Maltese cross. Inside the building, there are magnificent stained glass windows recalling the glorious past and the charitable side of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem. In addition to the stained glass windows, there is also a treasure trove of gold and silverware, including a beautiful chalice donated by Napoleon III in 1863.

The Rocks of Faulat are located 2 km from Marcolès, in the direction of Boisset. This megalith is located in the middle of the forest and contrary to what one might think, it is indeed of natural origin! Formed by the erosion of this volcanic rock during the previous millennia, the stone split and rolled to finally obtain what we can see today.

Marcolès, a medieval town fortified in the 12th century, has preserved its two gates linked by the Rue Longue. Along this street, the heart of the village's activity for centuries, you'll find a line of dashing Renaissance facades with irresistible charm. Our group tours are available all year round. Saint-Mamet-la-Salvetat, the second-largest commune in the Châtaigneraie Cantalienne, is its administrative centre. A large village with a wide range of shops and services, Saint-Mamet offers one of the most breathtaking views of the Mounts of Cantal.

At 771 m, a toposcope offers a circular view of the Mounts of Cantal from Saint-Mamet. Chapel and calvary. Games for children, fitness trail. The Chapel of St. Lawrence was built in the Romanesque period, just like its “twin”, La Capelotte, in Roannes-Saint-Mary. Both are built in the same way, they are small buildings with small openings. At the top of the door, there is a bell gable.

L'Auberge de Mourjou, with its restaurant and guest rooms, has been open since 18 March 2024. Daily menu (€19,90) from Monday 12pm to Friday 2pm. Chef Kara Asatryan's menu (€39) is available for lunch and dinner on Saturdays and lunch on Sundays. Booking recommended. The chef's menu consists of a choice of two starters, a choice of two main courses and a choice of two desserts. The menu changes every 2 weeks according to the season and her inspiration.
