The corporation of nautes " the traders of the water " had obtained a jurisdiction installed in the xiiie century in the " Visiting room to the Middle-class persons " situated near the Pantheon, in the location of the current N 20 of the street Soufflot. The middle-class persons obtained a Provost of the traders whose skills were limited to the commercial domain. The provost of the traders, assisted by four aldermen, took care of the supply of the city, the public works, the plate of the taxes and had the jurisdiction on the river business. The first provost of the traders of Paris was Evrard de Valenciennes.

Originally, the quay Voltaire was only the western part of the quay Malaquais. We gave him the name of quay of Théatins after a monastery of théatins had become established there in 1644 by buying, thanks to the generosity of cardinal Jules Mazarin, a house which can shelter approximately twenty five members of a religious order in the location of the current no 23 and no 25 quay Voltaire. The convent was defused in 1790 and demolished in 1822. In 1595 Guillaumede Varic installed a tilery there. In 1791, the quay took the name of quay Voltaire in homage to the writer who died in 1778 in the hotel of the marquess of Villette there.Since Balzac, who places antique dealer's mysterious shop of La Peau de chagrin, the quay Voltaire shelters numerous antique dealers, today rather specialized in the upper upscale segment. In the beginning of the XIXth century, the first secondhand booksellers of Paris make it their appearance.

This stop is a railway station, as Orsay was at the end of the railway line before it housed all the nineteenth century European artistic movements. The thousands of visitors who visit the museum each day cause a bit of disturbance in this secretive, discreet quarter. The first royal statue restored in bets, after the Revolution and the Empire, was the one of Henri IV, chosen because of the affection which a majority of the population carried to the founder of the dynasty of Bourbons. A popular subscription was even thrown to finance the command of the monument. A temporary work welcomed Louis XVIII on the bridge in May, 1814.

First came abbots who founded a community that possessed much money and knowledge. Then the Académie Française and the École des Beaux-Arts (art school) set up here. And finally Simone de Beauvoir, Jean-Paul Sartre and all their friends who held forth while Boris Vian played and Juliette Gréco sang in the cellars. Those are the intellectual roots of Saint-Germain-des-Prés. But is there anything left? Even though the galleries and bookshops are holding out, ready-to-wear is elbowing out ready-to-think. But if you forget the flashy window displays and explore the little streets around rue de Buci, where the market is held, or the quays (the oldest being Quai des Grands-Augustins that dates back to 1313), you'll find liveliness and artists who still breathe.

The Pont Royal is a bridge crossing the river Seine in Paris. It is the third oldest bridge in Paris, after the Pont Neuf and the Pont Marie. Located near the metro station: Tuileries LocationThe Pont Royal links the Right Bank by the Pavillon de Flore with the Left Bank of Paris between rue du Bac and the rue de Beaune. The bridge is constructed with five elliptical arches en plein cintre. A hydrographic ladder, indicating floods' highest level in Paris, is visible on the last pier nearest each bank. History In 1632, the entrepreneur Pierre Pidou directed the construction of a wooden toll-bridge which would be called Pont Sainte-Anne (in deference to Anne of Austria) or Pont Rouge (due to its color). It was designed to replace the Tuileries ferry upon which the rue du Bac (bac meaning ferry in French) owes its name. The ferry had been offering crossings since 1550. Fragile, this bridge of fifteen arches would be repaired for the first time in 1649, completely redone two years later, burnt in 1654, flooded in 1656, completely rebuilt in 1660, propped up in 1673 and finally carried away by a flood in February 1684. Madame de Sévigné reported that this last incident caused the loss of eight of the bridge's arches. It was finally reconstructed between October 25, 1685, and June 13, 1689, this time with stone, receiving complete financing from the king Louis XIV; it was the king who gave it the name Pont Royal. Louvois director of the Bâtiments du Roi, charged Jacques Gabriel, Jules Hardouin-Mansart and François Romain with the construction project. In the 18th century, the bridge was a popular meeting place for various festivities and celebrations. At the time of the French Revolution, in the period following the fall of the monarchy on 10 August 1792 and the beginning of the First French Empire in 1804 - the name of Pont Royal was changed to Pont National. During that period, General Napoléon Bonaparte (future Napoléon I, Emperor of the French) had cannons installed on the bridge in order to protect the Convention Nationale and the Committee of Public Safety, housed in the Tuileries Palace.During the First French Empire (1804-1814), Napoléon I renamed the bridge the Pont des Tuileries, a name that was kept until the Restoration in 1814 when Louis XVIII gave back to the bridge its royal name. The bridge underwent a last reconstruction in 1850. In 1939, it was classified as a monument historique under the same bill as the Pont Neuf and the Pont Marie.In 2005, the Pont Royal was illuminated by lights at night as one of the Paris Olympic Bid highlights. In 1816, a large crowd went to the port at the Louvre to watch the docking of the Elise, the first steamboat. Today, the crowd comes to the museum, the home port for art from all over the world.
