Unveil the wonders at CAMPING CHAMPS D'ETE in Saint-benigne

This trail will take you through the village of Saint-Bénigne, with its scattered settlements grouped into numerous hamlets and split in 2 by the D2 departmental road, route de Saint Trivier. The tour departs from Saint-Bénigne town hall. The church of Saint-Bénigne was built thanks to Michel Poisat (1802-1869) and his wife, whose tombs can be found in this neo-Romanesque church. The timber-framed upper and lower houses opposite the church are well worth a visit.

On this route, you'll discover the vast floodplain of the Saône, which stretches as far as the eye can see. When you reach the banks of the Saône, you can see the Ile de la Motte, which has been designated a sensitive natural area. Ile de la Motte is home to colonies of herons: black-crowned night heron, little egret and cattle egret, which are sometimes sensitive to disturbance during the breeding season. The existence of the island in the river is also an asset for maintaining fish diversity. Sediments transported by the Saône have been deposited and accumulated at La Motte, gradually creating islets and secondary arms. Together, these form a mosaic of natural habitats with an exceptional diversity of species. The beaver is present on the site and contributes to its management by cutting willow and poplar branches to eat the bark.

Leaving from Arbigny town hall. This trail will introduce you to the commune of Arbigny, a vast area covering 1,747 hectares! Arbigny retains many traces of its agricultural past in its landscape. To the east are the meadows and cultivated fields, in harmony with the woods and coppices, and to the west is the vast Val de Saône meadow, home to troops of cattle from spring onwards. The hamlets are typical of the Bresse region, with linear adobe buildings with hollow tile roofs framing a courtyard.

Depart from Arbigny town hall to explore the surrounding woodland and hedged farmland, the Bresse poultry and the Bief mill. Arbigny's landscape retains many traces of its agricultural past, such as the meadows and cultivated fields, which are in harmony with the woods and undergrowth. You can also see Bresse buildings, mixed farming and Bresse poultry.

You can see the church of Gorrevod, built in the 12th and 13th centuries on a hill. Standing alone, surrounded by its cemetery, it dominates the neighbouring Reyssouze valley with its bell tower, shining with all its glazed tiles.

The ramparts were built in 1399, forming a perfect circle around the village. A few watchtowers and brick walls (privately owned) bear witness to this medieval past. It's possible to take a walk around the ramparts.

Our farm is open to share our passion for breeding: Charolais cows, wagyus (the best meat in the world) and Selle Français sport horses. We are committed to respect for animals, the environment and transparency. Wagyu, the legendary Japanese beef. "Waygyu" means "Japanese beef". This breed is at the origin of several exceptional meat-producing regions (Kobe beef, Hida beef, Ishigaki beef, etc.) throughout the Japanese archipelago. It was at the end of the 19th century, after more than a hundred years of prohibition, that the Japanese population began to consume the meat of oxen previously used for agricultural work. The breed was selected for the marbling of its meat, but also for its docility. Respect for animals and their environment is an integral part of Japanese Buddhist culture. One of the best beef cuts in the world! The marbling (intramuscular fat) gives the meat its taste: its importance is a characteristic of hardy breeds that is lost with selection to increase muscle mass. It explains the unrivalled flavor of Wagyu beef and its exceptional smoothness. Wagyu beef is also rich in unsaturated fatty acids, notably Omega 3. We also raise a herd of Charolais cattle, carefully selected to produce quality meat. For direct sale, we reserve young cows aged 4-6 years who have had one to three calves: this is what gives the tastiest, most tender meat. They are fattened with the same high-quality feed as Wagyu cattle, and the fattening period (from 4 to 12 months) ensures that the meat is very marbled for the breed, and therefore very tasty. Breeding in the Ain region. Our methods are based on the renowned tradition of Bresse breeding, and combine the very best in terms of genetics, feed, habitat and rearing methods, with respect for the animal (and the employees). The farm provides the cows' feed: natural meadows, artificial meadows (Swiss Mix) and cereals form the basis. The cows and their calves are raised freely in the meadows during the good season (March to November). We integrate respect for the environment into our breeding approach: hedges are planted, manure is treated by methanization and the energy thus supplied is used to dry fodder in the barn. We optimize crop production by alternating grazing with cattle and horses (thus also reducing parasite pressure). Finally, in keeping with Japanese culture, we take particular care to maintain the docility of our animals through respectful and attentive domestication.

“Prairie” of the Saone Valley This area consists of the huge meadows of the Saone valley and the hedged farmland of Bresse. To the west the rich meadows, floodplain of the Saone, dedicated to cattle and agriculture. This area is of great interest as much for its birdlife as for its plant life. Here you can see common curlews, black-tailed godwits, grasshopper warblers, skylarks and wheatears, “Rale des Genets”(groaning broom) among others.

Sand Dunes at Sermoyer The sand dunes known as “les Charmes” are a big surprise so far from the sea, and are the product of winds and flood waters. The open spaces are surrounded by woodland and some wetlands. This variety of natural habitats encourages an exceptional variety of species. A pedestrian path of 1.5km leads you round and helps you to discover the riches of this rare site, thanks to the presence of a series of signs and labels. Lande des Oignons at Boz (onion /bulb moor) A peat bog in the Saone Valley! Here at Boz the peat is acidic, a very unusual feature for this region and at the height of 200 metres above sea level. This special area is home to amphibians, dragon-flies, historical plants, wetlands and marshes. An information board on site is a very helpful guide. The Montalibord farmhouse features a Saracen-style mantel with a square, pyramidal bolster of an uncommonly abraded form. It is surmounted by a wrought-iron cross and its sides are decorated with triangular imbrications. Dendrochronological analyses show that the house was built in 1450, 1517-1518 and underwent several alterations in 1780. The chimney and roof were listed in 1944, and the whole farmhouse in 1974. Beautifully flowered in fine weather, it is still in business today (Charolais cattle, pond fishing and tourist accommodation = gîte and chambres d'hôtes). Inhabited until the mid-70s, it still has an open-air fireplace and period furniture (19th c. or even earlier), in particular an imposing archebanc (ancestral bench) with storage and a table. Also on display are a salt chair, a four-poster bed, tables and benches for meals, a tourti (bread ladder), a sink stone, a chest... In the old rooms, a presentation of the farm from 1932 to the present day, with a few tools and photos showing the evolution of farming techniques, but also the philosophy that has always prevailed on this farm over the three generations that have succeeded one another: the quest for quality. The eco-museum can be visited daily. Guided tours available on request.

Grandval farmhouse, named after an ancient parish, has been brought back to life by Morgan Benoît, the new owner since 2021. The great room, with its fireplace and period furniture, is open to visitors by special arrangement during the Heritage Days. The Grandval farmhouse dates back to the very early 16th century. The oak used to support the Saracen fireplace was felled in 1503. The Saracen fireplace was listed as a historic monument in 1925, and the body of the house in 1981. In 2021, the farm was bought by Benoît Morgan, a heritage enthusiast from Mézériat, where his grandparents and great-grandparents were millers. The farm is open for Heritage Days in September. In 2023, more than 400 people visited it. PLEASE NOTE: Exceptionally open on request and for the European Heritage Days.
