Mont Valerien : the memorial of fighting France The Mont-Valérien memorial was the main place of execution by the German army on French territory during World War II. These men, murdered because they were resistance fighters condemned to death or hostages, Jews and Communists, are all reminders of our history which naturally made this site a Mecca of national memory. After the war, the site was chosen by General de Gaulle to honor the memory of the Dead for France from 1939 to 1945; he inaugurated the memorial of fighting France there on June 18, 1960. Inside the site, the “Remembrance Trail” allows you to follow the path of those who were about to be shot: from the chapel, the walls of which still keep traces of graffiti engraved by convicts, in the clearing of the executed. The discovery of the Mont-Valérien memorial allows us to better understand what the German repression was, the French collaboration, and what was the journey of those "who loved life to death.

In 1755, King Louis XV ordered the building of three identical barracks in Rueil, Courbevoie and Saint-Denis to house his regiment officially. The Franco-Swiss Museum, located in the Guynemer Barracks, a listed building, tells the story of this elite regiment. The regiment of the Swiss Guards, permanent army corps of soldiers was created in 1616 by Louis XIII. The first Swiss became integrated with the population towards 1646. They will be billeted in private houses until 1754, the date at which Luis XV to built three barracks in Rueil-Malmaison, Courbevoie and Saint-Denis. Listed monument historic, the barracks of Rueil stills exists. A out building of the museum is specially devoted to the Swiss Guards whom are settled since 1999 in one of the gate lodge of the barrack.

For 400 years, the Carmes Boyer water workshop has been bottling the virtues of plants! Since 2015 the place has received the state label "living heritage". Driven by the constant concern to compose with the rhythm of the seasons and the earth to produce a high quality product, Maison Eau des Carmes Boyer, sole heir to the property of the elixir, perpetuates this age-old know-how by ensuring the manufacture and sale of lemon balm water. To promote the short circuit, the workshops are located next to a field where the plants necessary for the production of this ancestral water grow. Visits can be organized by the Tourist Office in collaboration with the employees of Eau des Carmes Boyer. And their products, such as herbal teas, sprays, soaps... are on sale at the Tourist Office.

In the 12th century, it was a stone quarry, especially alberese, the same limestone that was used to build the splendid Saint-Denis Basilica. Later, mushroom growers took over this exceptional place and transformed the town of Carrière into the mushroom capital of Europe. Today, the quarry has been regenerated and listed as an architectural heritage zone. It has become the Espace Carrara / Carrara City, a leading arts venue: sculpture, film, dance, photography, painting and its natural underground setting make it a great place for all forms of creative expression.

Church of Saint-Pierre Saint-Paul : Josephine’s final resting place Placed under the protection of Saint Pierre and Saint Paul, the church, a listed building, houses the tombs of Empress Josephine and her daughter, Queen Hortense who expressed the desire to be buried beside her mother. Josephine’s tomb, made of Carrara marble, was completed in 1825 and is decorated with a statue by Cartellier. The statue represents the Empress kneeling, recalling, as desired by her children, David’s famous painting “The Coronation of Napoleon”. One can also admire the beautiful church organ case offered by Napoleon III and signed Bacchio d’Agniolo and the beautiful bas-relief of the altar in gilded bronze designed in the 12th century by François Anguier for the Church of Val de Grace in Paris.

Built during the golden age of formal gardens, the 17th-century garden of the Carrières-sur-Seine mairie, whose stunning greenery is reflected in its two ponds, was created by a student of André Le Nôtre. Its layout and ornamentation give this place a tranquil atmosphere and ensured both its listing in 1945 and its receiving the glorious 'Plus beaux Jardins de France' award from the Conservatoire des Jardins et Paysages de France in 1996. It is ideally located in the centre of the town, bordering the Quai Charles de Gaulle.

Famous for its 12th-century altarpiece – the original is now preserved at the Louvre – the Eglise Saint Jean-Baptiste at Carrières-sur-Seine was given a new lease of life in 2013. Although the building retains few visible traces of its long existence, a bas-relief carved in the 12th century, discovered in the 19th century during renovation work on the church, attests to the building's early origins. It is a remarkable example of Early Gothic architecture. This altarpiece is a stone bas-relief divided into three sections. Seemingly the only one of its kind in France, it is an important fragment of an altarpiece of which certain parts resemble those of the Sainte-Anne Portal in Notre-Dame, Paris. In 1915, it moved to the Salles des Sculptures du Moyen Age at the Louvre. A copy of this altarpiece, created by a local artist, was inaugurated in 1999 and placed above the altar.
