This physical hike invites you to travel with a magnificent link in the heart of the largest Lapiaz in Europe between the Varan and Platé huts. From the Via Ferrata car park, follow the road to the Chalets de Curalla. A steeper path then leads to the refuge in a few dozen minutes. From Varan, a technical path goes straight up towards Barmerousse. Follow the red dots on the ground to cross the magnificent limestone desert until you reach the refuge of Platé. Head south to descend the wall formed by the Fiz cliffs to Charbonnière. The path then becomes wider until you reach the Jardin des Cimes from where you can return to the starting point via the Balcons d'Assy (signs for Le Coudray).

Explore the Platé Desert by climbing to the heights of the Fiz massif. This physical hike invites you to travel with a magnificent link in the heart of the largest Lapiaz in Europe between the refuges of Varan and Platé. From the Via Ferrata de Curalla car park, follow the track then the path that leads to the Varan refuge. A technical path then climbs straight up in the direction of Barmerousse. Follow the red dots marked on the ground to cross the magnificent limestone desert to the Platé refuge. Head south to descend to Charbonnière. The path then becomes wider up to the Jardin des Cimes from where you can reach the starting point via the Balcons d'Assy.

Discover a site of exceptional geological, floristic and faunistic richness. Up there await you a lunar landscape and a sumptuous panorama. The Platé Desert is the largest lapiaz in Europe. From the car park located along the Plaine-Joux road (in front of the Résidence Le Fontenay), cross and go up the track that starts at the Croix de Praz Coutant. Relatively easy at the start, the path becomes steeper towards the Chalets de Charbonnière. A footbridge allows you to cross the torrent before turning right, due north, towards the Platé refuge. This unique path zigzags through the forest then stiffens and winds its way through a system of ledges that provide access to the exit chimney. Take a short metal footbridge to come out on the plateau and contemplate the chalets. Continue north to reach the Platé refuge (2032 m). Return by the same route.

A trail running ahead? Get ready with this 50km course and almost 3800m EG! Day 1: Depart Plaine Joux, climb to Platé via Les Egratz. Then head for the refuge de Sales. Pass the Cascades de la Pleureuse and de la Sauffaz, the Cascade du Rouget and then climb up to the Grenairon refuge. 10h15 walking, 24km, 2200 EG, 1650 EL. Day 2: reach the Fonts hut, then the Alfred Wills hut. Pass Lac d'Anterne and Lac de Pormenaz on the Argentières trail. Return to Plaine Joux via the Chatelet d'Ayères and Lac Vert. 10h30 walking, 26.5km, 1650 EG, 2200 EL It's all modular: organize your hut stops as you wish!

Behind its quiet and robust appearance, the church of Passy shelters nineteen centuries of history: Roman ex-voto, Romanesque bell tower-porch, 15th century choir, baroque and neo-classical decorations... It invites you on an extraordinary journey through time! The old lady was first mentioned in a deed of gift in 1012. However, the building was altered twice, in the 15th and 17th centuries. While the exterior walls are decorated with a sober gypsum plaster, the interior of the church is more richly decorated. In the choir, a superb altarpiece with twisted columns awaits you, where an 18th century painting represents Saint Peter surrounded by two important ecclesiastical figures of the Savoyard Church: Saint François de Sales and Blessed Amédée IX, Duke of Savoy. The Church of Saint Donat was built in the Plagnes hamlet. Its construction began in 1760 and was completed the following year. The church was consecrated on August 22nd, 1761. The building was funded by the inhabitants of Plagnes, a priest, Claude David, who contributed a very large sum of his personal fortune, and the King, who sent the sum of 500 pounds. The bell and belfry were restored in the early nineteenth century, then in 1875 and 1876. A new bell was cast in 1888. Today, the interior of the church is dramatically deteriorating. The Association for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage and Baroque Art in the Mont-Blanc region is fighting to fund the restoration of the church. Important funding is required. So far donations has enabled the resoration of a 3 part bay window by Christine Charbonnel and the restoration of the fabric of the main altarpiece by Claire Bigand. The association has launched a second appeal for donations to fund the restoration of the six other windows. For his part, the local mayor has financed the interior plastering to allow the restoration of the murals.

This small hamlet chapel was dedicated to St-François-de-Sales, St-Symphorien, St-Félix et St-Grat. It's a typical baroque chapel from the second half of the 17th century.

This waterfall is formed by the Ugine torrent springing from the sides of the Platé mountain. A heart of rock divides the waterfall into two. A promontory enables you to admire the falls. This magnificent waterfall used to provide water for the numerous mills and carpenteries in the proximity. The foaming waters are even more spectacular after strong rains.

Founded by Father Berger and built by Pierre Benezech for the workers of the factory in Chedde, the church, dedicated in 1934 to the patron saint of craftsmen and the working class. The decor of the six glass windows was atributed to Raphaël Laurdeur, renowned for his work in the Art Deco period. The church is also admired for the vaulted structure of its nave, the mosaics on the altar, the Stations of the Cross and the baptismal font.

The Assy Plateau is an architectural site of international renown thanks to its former sanatoriums. These buildings illustrate the technical and aesthetic engineering of twentieth-century architecture. They had a considerable influence on our habitat.

The sculpture "Plaidoyer pour les droits de l'homme" simultaneously translates the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Industrial Age (Gilles Roussi 2000). This tall tower with a square base is made from stainless steel sheeting. The Declaration of Human Rights is engraved on all four sides. For this work of art, Roussi (1947) combines human values??, modern materials, mathematics and technology.

The church of Notre-Dame-de-Toute-Grâce (1950) is the key building in the 20th century revival of sacred art. The masterpieces that decorate it are signed by the greatest artists of modern art. Founded by Canon Devémy for the sanatorial population, designed by Maurice Novarina and consecrated in 1950, the Plateau d'Assy church was decorated, with the advice of Dominican Father Marie-Alain Couturier, by the greatest masters of modern art (Jean Bazaine, Pierre Bonnard, Georges Braque, Marc Chagall, Fernand Léger, Jean Lurçat, Henri Matisse, Germaine Richier, Georges Rouault, Chaim Jacob Lipchitz, Marguerite Huré, Théodore Strawinsky, Carlo Sergio Signori, Adeline Hébert-Stevens). In 2004, the building was classified as a Historic Monument and awarded the "Patrimoine du XXème siècle" label.

Inaugurated in 1931, Sancellemoz is a compact building, seven floors high with a huge roof terrace-solarium. This was the first sanatorium in Plateau d'Assy with its framework, floors and terrace to be builf of reinforced concrete. Sanatorium opened by Louis-Paul Dubuisson. In the basement, the decoration of the chapel of St. Anselm was led by Canon John Devémy, chaplain of the sanatorium and founder of the Church of Notre Dame de Toute Grac. (Murals and stained glass windows by Valentine Reyre, co-founder of the Brotherhood of the Arc and collaborator of the Sacred Art Workshops.). A few metres from Sancellemoz, the Passerane, built like the Mont Blanc sanatorium by Pierre Dupuy.

Luminescence 2001 is a cathedral of the industrial age (Yan Dupuy, 1993). This pyramid of light, mounted on four legs that support the triangular iridescent needles, consists of plates of a translucent acrylic material similar to glass and as solid as steel: Lexan (polycarbonate). Yan Dupuy (1950), trainee goldsmith, here assembles a material well known in industry, architecture and transport for its strength, light weight and transparency.

La Grande Echelle symbolizes with humour the social ladder (Semser Charles, 1973). This large sculpture in reinforced concrete and dyed in the mass is a satire of desire for power over the primitive society. The main structure consists of a large couple that form the A of Africa. This is beset by a multitude of small figures whose function and precarious balance symbolize different human characteristics in our society. Born in Philadelphia (United States) in 1922, Semser lives and works in the region of Paris since 1949.

Built in 1929 by Pierre Dupuy and called the "Grand Hotel du Mont Blanc" until 1939, this is the largest institution in Plateau d'Assy. It belongs to the group "compact". Although its framework is made of reinforced concrete, it is built with classical materials and still belongs to the regionalist movement, which was abundant at the beginning of the 20th century. Its chapel, redesigned in 1961 by Henry-Jacques Le Même, is lit by a path of flagstones, mosaics and glass embedded in cement, made by Father Ephrem Socard, from the abbey of St Benoît d'en-Calcat.

REFUGE CLOSED FOR WORK Under the majestic Aiguille de Varan, this refuge overlooks the Arve valley. It faces a stupendous panorama: the Mont Blanc and the Aravis mountains. Easily accessible, it is open for gourmet breaks and cozy nights. The refuge is part of a group of mountain chalets on the side of the Aiguille de Varan at 2544m. This is the starting point for many hikes but also a a great place to stay over (Unique view of the Mont Blanc). 40 minutes from the refuge, you can climb the recent climbing routes in the sector of Barmerousse. This site is also renowned to paragliders. There are 3 take-off zones nearby, the nearest less than 5 minutes away. There are 3 different landing points 1000m below. In good weather, dinners can be taken outside on the terrace watching the sunset. Breakfast can be enjoyed at sunrise.
