A very easy hike, between forest and meadow, around the Lac du Tact, ideal for birdwatching. A 23-hectare artificial lake, Lac du Tact is the result of the impoundment of a former peat bog, which explains its shallow depth (around 2 meters). Numerous animal species can be observed here, including birds (lapwing, red-winged warbler, green-winged teal, etc.), dragonflies, amphibians, crickets and European otters. A thematic trail has been laid out along the way, for birdwatching and awareness-raising. The trail features interpretation panels and an observatory for a reasoned approach to the species. Departure point: Lac du Tact parking lot. From the parking lot, walk along the road to the right towards the Tact dike. Variant : The Lac de la Crégut trail (5 km) extends the hike around the largest glacial lake in the Massif Central.

This tour takes you through the heart of the deep Gravières forest, to the "Pont du Diable" (Devil's Bridge) over the Tarentaine, which makes small jumps into water holes called "marmites". The Gravières forest covers 600 hectares. It was once used by a sawmill on the estate of the same name. The mill employed up to a hundred people before being burnt down during the Second World War. Rebuilt, it was subsequently abandoned. Departure point: Carrefour de Lavergne. Take the track on the left (approx. 20 m from the crossroads). Go down through the woods to the forest track.

This easy hiking trail takes you around the Crégut natural lake to discover the unique landscapes of the Artense region, with its forests, meadows and panoramic views of the Cantal and Sancy mountains. The Lac de la Crégut is the largest natural lake of glacial origin in the Massif Central, covering almost 37 hectares. Its depth (two pools of 16 m and 26 m) and the fact that its natural water supply is low in nutrients have prevented it from becoming a peat bog. Departure point: Lac de la Crégut parking lot. Take the road towards the hamlet of Crégut and follow the blue markings. Two variations are possible. Variant n°1: A 2.8 km path (signposted from the Lac de la Crégut parking lot) leads to the beach of Lac de Lastioulles (Pavillon Bleu) and its nautical base. Variant n°2: The Lac du Tact trail (3.3 km) extends the hike with an itinerary designed for birdwatching and awareness-raising.

This trail, with its sometimes narrow path, takes you along the wooded banks of the Tarentaine River and in the footsteps of one of the many mill remains that once populated our region. Biodiversity trees have numerous cavities, making them ideal living quarters for many species. These cavities may have formed as a result of various events, such as drilling by birds. Over time, cavities can grow in size and become attractive to a wide range of cavity nesters: old and dead trees, a rich source of biodiversity! Starting point: D622 between Marchal and Lanobre, about 4 km from Marchal. The starting point is on the left-hand side of the road leading to the hamlet of Mazauriel. Follow the path.

A wonderful way to discover the Artense, a land of stone and water. A must-see is the peat bog of the same name at La Pignole. Start at Place de l'Eglise in Marchal, take the D622 towards La Crégut for 100 m, then fork right onto a path lined with low walls that joins the D422. 1. At a ruin, follow the low-walled path into a meadow, and climb up the meadow on the left to the road. 2. Junction with PR 1. Climb left to Coustal. Off the circuit, continue straight ahead to reach the Pignole peat bog (400 m). 3. At the entrance to Lavergne, level with the first houses, leave the road and turn left onto a grassy path lined with spruce trees.

Departing from Champs-sur-Tarentaine-Marchal and covering a distance of 44km, the route takes you to La Tour d'Auvergne and the "Dôme-Sancy" itinerary, which lasts from 2 to 7 days.

Go right at the next two crossroads; the trail overlooks the Chavanon gorge.Off the route: a 200 m return trip to the Arpiat bridge. Go up the road to the right for 600 m, and at the hairpin bend, take the forest track to the left. Follow it for 1.5 km.Be careful: the path is not very visible: leave the track for a small trail on the right that winds upwards. It joins a path that you take on the left. Follow it for some time and join the road. Turn left onto it. At the crossroads with the path that leads to the church of St-Martin, go back as far as the Chapelle de la Manants: go down; at the barricade, turn left onto a trail that leads down to the chapel. Push on to the reservoir. Go up the road (on the left, you can make a round trip to the remains of the tower and the fountain).Take the trail on the left that leads up to the church of St Martin. Continue past the church; the path passes in front of a spring and then follows the stream in the coombe: cross it and follow the markings carefully in this part because the trail is sometimes not very visible. Once you reach a clearing, cross the stream again; continue to the right: the trail continues to climb and joins a path that you take to the right to reach the village of Bourrière.As you leave the village, take the path on the left. When you get to the wood, the track becomes a path and crosses a stream. Go back up to the road.Cross it, and continue on the path opposite. Follow this road to the right to return to the starting point.

This route takes you from the village of Lanobre to the bucolic setting of the Château de Val, nestled on a peninsula in the lake created on the Dordogne by the Bort-les-Orgues dam. Built in the 15th century on 13th-century ruins, Château de Val dominates the Bort-les-Orgues reservoir from its 30-metre rocky promontory. In 1951, when the valley was impounded for hydroelectric power generation, the château was spared, but three villages and a railroad line disappeared. In 1960, the Château de Val was featured in the film "Le Capitan", starring Bourvil and Jean Marais. Departure point: Kiosk in the Gane gardens. Go to the traffic circle and turn left into rue du Marché, then left again towards RD 922. Cross the road, turn left and immediately take the 1st right. Continue straight through the village of Estours to Val. Variant : Part of this circuit follows circuit no. 16, which links the Val site to the Siauve beach. This 5.8km out-and-back trail offers an opportunity to discover the landscape, history and botany of the banks of the Dordogne reservoir.

An easy, beautiful walk around the lake to admire the scenery.

At 808m, it's the highest point in the commune of Lanobre. With its 360° view, it's a great place for stargazing. It overlooks the village that bears its name, 2 km to the east of the village. From here, a circular panorama with an orientation table and picnic area opens out onto the Monts du Cantal and Monts du Sancy. In the hamlet, head towards Le Fraysse to the orientation table, or follow circuit 11: Le Pied du Fraysse. Free access all year round. You're climbing a volcano! The Puy du Fraysse is one of Sumène Artense's volcanic relics.

Above the church, the esplanade of the old Château offers a magnificent panorama of the Artense and Sancy mountains. Marchal is a village surrounded by the landscapes of the Artense and considered the capital of fiddlers and traditional music. Its church clings to a rocky outcrop, and the remains of the nearby castle offer a vast panorama of the Monts du Sancy.

Perched at an altitude of 800 metres, Lac de Lastioulles boasts a sandy beach ideal for summer water sports such as swimming, sailing and canoeing. Swimming is supervised in July and August. No garbage cans on the beach: please take your garbage with you. Dogs are not allowed in the swimming area. Since 2015, the beach has been awarded the Blue Flag label for the quality of its environment and the activities on offer. The bathing area is supervised in July and August by a professional with training in accompanying people with disabilities. Disabled access to the beach and a tiralo (beach chair for the disabled) are also available. The beach has been awarded the Tourisme & Handicap label.

The Bort-les-Orgues lake is an artificial lake of 10.72 km2 and results from the creation of the Bort-les-Orgues dam on the high course of the Dordogne. It marks the point where the river enters its gorges and is the first upstream hydroelectric development on the Dordogne.The lake is 21 km long and is shared between the departments of Corrèze, Cantal and Puy-de-Dôme. Although there is no walking tour of the lake yet, a nature-sports festival takes place every year around 14 July, the Aquaterra, which includes trail and water sports.

In the early Middle Ages, Robert, founder of the Chaise-Dieu abbey, had a priory built on the right bank of the Dordogne. The abbey flourished from the 11th to the 13th century, with 16 monks. However, it was sacked around 1597 by the Huguenots. Today, all that remains of the priory is part of the surrounding wall, the large vaulted hall, the base of the keep and the chapel of the Manants. The latter was built outside the walls for the surrounding population. It served as a parish church, succeeding the church of Saint Martin further up the plateau. Every summer, the chapel hosts exhibitions and concerts.

A 125-hectare lake perched at an altitude of 800 meters. It's a popular swimming and fishing spot. The beach has been awarded the Blue Flag since 2015 and is supervised every year during the summer season. Since 1970, Lac de Lastioulles has also been one of the largest water reservoirs in the Dordogne basin. The lake supplies water to the Bort-les-Orgues reservoir and the Auzerette and Rhue hydroelectric plants. Every year during the summer season, the tourist office organizes events around the lake on the theme of biodiversity, called "Pavillon bleu" events. You can tour the lake by car, motorcycle or bike from the road, or admire the view from the lake's main dike or from the beach located on a peninsula.
