Discover two magnificent lakes and a complete nature reserve that is closely studied by scientists. Overnight stay at the Muzelle refuge (reservation essential). Itinerary with public transport proposed by Alpes Là. Please note: this site is located in the heart of a French National Park and is subject to specific regulations. Start: Bourg d'Arud Camping (954 m) - 1 h 10 (2 km, D+ 321 m, D- 12 m) From the stop, cross Bourg d'Arud on the D530 (heading south-east). Cross the bridge over the Vénéon and turn right through the hamlet of l'Alleau and its fountain-washhouse. Then follow the GR54® path rapidly rising through the forest to reach a characteristic ruin. 1) Ruine du Pleynet (1249 m) - 3 h (4.4 km, D+ 900 m, D- 30 m) Follow the path along the torrent de la Pisse, with its beautiful waterfalls. At the Chapeau Roux waterfall, the path crosses the torrent via a footbridge, then continues up steep switchbacks to reach a peat bog flat. Five hundred metres further on, you come to the refuge and Lac de la Muzelle in its glacial cirque, where tongues of the hanging glacier glacier. 2) Refuge de la Muzelle (2130 m) - 1 h 30 (2.4 km, D+ 413 m) Follow the path along the edge of the lake until you cross a footbridge (2102 m). Turn due west for the route to the Col du Vallon, which winds its way among rocks (cairns) and then winds its way up a steep, more open slope. 3) Col du Vallon (2531 m) - 1 h 45 (4.3 km, D+ 37 m, D- 1,058 m) Descend the pass on the north-west side along the path. At around 1750 m, the path bends northwards to cross a ravine (a tricky passage on a rocky slab). After a brief ascent, we descend a few hairpin bends to reach the north shore of Lac Lauvitel. To the south of the lake, an integral nature reserve forbids the presence of man. 4) Lac du Lauvitel - Les Selles (1501m) - 50 min (2.4 km, D- 484 m) Descend to the Pont des Balmes on the north path, towards La Danchère via Les Selles, along a beautiful paved path and remarkably well-maintained low walls.

Here, take your time to admire the Barre des Ecrins from an uncommon angle. Soon afterwards, the descent towards the Lauvitel looks down almost continually on Lake Lauvitel, with sections that are sometimes fitted with handrails. After Lauvitel “beach” and its pile of stone blocks, the descent towards La Danchère passes along a path that is almost entirely paved and that can get quite crowded. You then return to the village of L’Alleau partly alongside the powerful River Vénéon, in peace and quiet, through the forest.

Hike of about 1:30, a nice loop to discover two old hamlets of Venosc TECHNICAL INFORMATIONS Starting point: Alleau hamlet Elevation gain: 358 m Duration There/Back: 1h30 Distance: 4,4 km Level: Easy ITINERARY From the tourist office, descent to the donkey farm. Cross the wooden bridge, pass in front of Adventure park. Follow the path until you reach a big panel that indicates Muzelle refuge. The ascent is difficult, 45mn to go the the Pleynet hamlet. Then turn left at the fountain of "Cerisier" and cross the river (bridge) Follow the path to the ruins of Laffreyte. TO KNOW Old hamlet of Venosc, where some ruins of house are still here in the middle of the forest which replaced the pastures.

Walking to La Muzelle is a way to discover the typical landscapes of the Oisans. The height difference is impressive, but it enables you to walk through a spruce wood, then on alpine grass, and finally in the middle of a mineral cirque. This cable car links Venosc village to the 2 Alpes ski resort in only 8 minutes! The church of Venosc is a mixture of several styles. Built in the 9th century, it has undergone numerous modifications over the years. Romanesque church dating from the 9th century, but which has been modified and enlarged over the years. The modern nave was built in 1910 thanks to the Carthusian fathers. The altarpiece dates from the 17th century and is in the baroque style. The two saints are St Paul and St Peter. St. Peter and St. Paul are inseparable. They are the two pillars of the Church and tradition has never celebrated one without the other. St. Peter is the titular of the church and St. Paul the patron of the parish. The church is one of the best endowed in the Oisans, partly thanks to the donations of rich donors such as Jacques Rochette and peddlers who made their fortune. The bell tower houses the oldest bell found in the Oisans, dating from 1622.

One of the oldest painted sundials in the "Dauphinoises" Alps. Dating from 1669, it bares an inscription stating "sun that doesn't know end" . Its needle disappeared and was replaced in 1998. The Roman numerals mark the hours with dots. The number 666 is supposed to represent the flames of hell. This must be seen in the context of the counter-reformation which saw the friars of the Bourg d'Oisans convent attempt to evangelise the Protestants in the Oisans.

At the end of the 19th century the forest was practically nonexistent, it had been reduced in favour of pastoral activity (on the higher planes) and for the culture of cereals, principally barley, above the inhabited areas. Towards 1945, the highest hamlets, like the one at Laffreyte above Bourg-d'Arud, were emptied of their inhabitant. Today the forest has gained ground covering the memory of a few ruins at the bottom of the track... Before the arrival of the motor car and the creation of roads, this itinerary around the lake and the Muzelle mountain pass was often used by the inhabitants of Venosc in order to cross the valley to the neighbouring valley of Valbonnais.

A charming stone chapel is located in the heart of a small perched hamlet The interior is simple with modest furnishings. It is well enlightened by a colorful stained glass. Its atmosphere reflects the simplicity of life in the village in XIXth century. In almost every hamlet, even the highest ones like Lanchatra, you'll find a chapel. This "secondary" religious building for a parish was not the property of the church, but of the private funds that enabled its construction. These funds could have come from a wealthy family, a lord or, as was the case in the hamlet of Puy le Haut, from an entire community in gratitude to a patron saint for protection or during an exceptional event. Since the separation laws of 1905, most churches and chapels are owned by the communes.

Dedicated to Saint Louis and to Saint Claude, Danchère Chapel displays its agreeable proportions to visitors. The stones forming the arc of a circle above the entrance and the window do not only have aesthetic value. They are rightly called "a relieving structure" because they help to redistribute the weight of the facade on both sides of the openings. In the recess hidden behind wire netting is a ceramic statue of Saint Louis created in the Tarn region.

With its paved lanes, its fountains and its stone wash-house, the Danchère offers an ideal starting point for going to Lauvitel which attracts 30 000 visitors every year. It is one of the numerous hamlets that make up the commune of Vénosc.

The Vénéon is an internationally famous river for whitewater sports. Canoeing with a double paddle gives visitors a chance to take on the turbulent waters and keep their heads out of the water using the Eskimo roll technique. Rafting, on a large, inflatable vessel, is very popular with beginners in the company of a guide, and is a big source of thrills and excitement. Here you can also see hot-dogs, a kind of bi-place canoe, and hydrospeeds, a sort of aquatic board sport where you descend the river on your front. Every year, the Vénéon Derby, one of the longest extreme canoeing races in the world, takes place here !  

The configuration of the site made it very favourable to pastoralism for several centuries. This area of pastures was rented during the 19th and 20th centuries to seasonal grazers from the South of France. The local flocks from Venosc and particularly the flock from the hamlet of Laffreyte also went there. At that time, the first animals up in the mountain each year were the cows then the sheep. Since the 1980s, a flock of sheep of round 1200 animals from the Hautes-Alpes summer graze from June onwards and spend the summer in this prairie.

The fault at Ser Barbier brings into contact the crystalline bas (the needle of Venosc) and a marly deposit (Vallon mountain pass). It was formed during the Jurassic period when the Téthys sea opened out, by breaking and crumbling the crystalline massif. The rubbing together of the two parts created a beautiful striated mirror clearly visible due to erosion.

At this time, even if a pastoral cabin was used by the mountaineers the bivouac was still often used in the Muzelle valley. In 1967, it was in the rocky cirque that the community built the refuge on the shore of Muzelle lake.

The Alpe du Pin Refuge is little known and discreet, and stands on the mountain pasture of the same name. It belongs to the Jarrets d'Acier association. It has everything needed to delight the heart, the soul and the calf muscles! Built in 1947, it has preserved its humble origins down the years by making reasonable adaptations to the needs of contemporary comfort. The Alpe du Pin Refuge is located at an altitude of 1,805 m, at the foot of the Tête de Lauranoure (3,325 m), the view of which from St-Christophe leaves no one indifferent. With a capacity of 20 places in a single dormitory, the visitor soon feels at home, and the layout of the refuge helps promote meetings and conversation. You can count on a simple, warm and friendly welcome from the refuge keepers.

The refuge is set on a magnificent belvedere, so you'll enjoy a gentle hike through unspoilt countryside. Around the refuge you'll find many activities such as hiking (tour du grand Cond, lac de la Mariande, lac du Salude, col de la Mariande...), mountaineering (tête de Lauranoure, col de la haute pisse...) and climbing (2 big routes in the pierroux, 3 routes around the Froide Pisse waterfall). Built in 1947, the refuge has retained the modesty of its origins over the decades, while reasonably adapting its comfort to today's requirements. Located at 2,268 m, this small unguarded refuge with no water, electricity or toilet is a call to adventure! Facing due south, it is located in the Écrins National Park, on the path leading to the Rochail summit. PRESENTATION Perched at an altitude of 2,268 meters, the Refuge des Sources is a small, unguarded 20 m² hut nestled in the Ecrins National Park, in the commune of Villard-Notre-Dame. Approximately 3 hours' walk from the village, it overlooks the Vallon torrent and offers a breathtaking view of the Oisans. This communal refuge, with its rustic authenticity, is an ideal stopover for backpackers or mountain lovers in search of adventure. CAPACITY AND FACILITIES Rustic in character, this small communal hut offers the most rudimentary comforts. It comprises 6 mattresses, blankets, a table and benches. A lovely mountain hut near Mizoën at an altitude of 1515 m. A stopover on the GR50 54C tour of the Ecrins and the start of numerous hikes on the Emparis plateau. Close to the petrifying Cascade de la Pisse waterfall, the via ferrata and a climbing route. Superb views of the Meije. From the car park at Les Aymes, follow the path marked in red and white (variant of the GR 54 path): the balcony trail makes its way above the Lac du Chambon before climbing up across the meadows. From there, hikers can either follow the discovery trail to the right that joins the refuge (adding ½ hour) or carry straight on to Les Clots. The walk and hut have been awarded the "Espit Parc" label and are perfect for families and people looking for peace and quiet and to reconnect with their inner selves! Along the way, and near the refuge, depending on the time of your visit, you may see marmots, chamois and butterflies, and depending on the season, feast your eyes and nose with lavender and orange lilies. You’ll also have a chance to admire the waterfalls above the hut, gushing out of a petrified fountain, forming lumps of tuf. The site is under a biotope protection order, so please stay on the path to avoid damaging this geological wonder.

Our gîte is located at the start of many hikes and is one of the stops on the GR54 tour of the Oisans and the Écrins. You have the option to rest at our gîte before continuing your journey to the next peaks. The gîte is also accessible by road. Located in the heart of the traditional village of Valsenestre, in the commune of Valjouffrey, the gîte can accommodate up to 40 people, divided into 4 dormitories. At the start of many hiking trails, notably the route to the Grand Tour of the Écrins, it’s the perfect spot for a well-deserved break under the linden (tilleul) trees. Breakfast is served from 6:00 to 8:00 a.m. Lunch, made with local products, is available from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. Desserts, afternoon snacks, and drinks are served throughout the afternoon. The Vallon de la Selle is dominated by this panoramic refuge with its bold architecture. It's a welcoming place for mountaineers, climbers and hikers approaching the glacier.
