Nature Exploration at Camping Municipal de La Bérarde

After a "country" climb, you reach the mountain pastures of the upper Lavey valley. The refuge stands as a reminder of pastoral life. Refuge temporarily closed Today the mountain pasture is inhabited by two flocks of sheep, but you can also observe chamois, marmots, foxes and birds around the refuge. TECHNICAL INFORMATION Departure point: Champhorent parking lot Ascent: 400 m Round trip time: 3h45 Distance: 9.4 km MAP AND TOPO OBP n° 5 (Oisans au Bout des Pieds) trail 531 IGN TOP 25 n°3336 ET ITINERARY The parking lot is at the entrance to the hamlet of Champhorent (3 km after St Christophe en Oisans), below the road. Take the footpath at the end of the parking lot down to the Vénéon torrent and its magnificent Pont des Rajas. Cross the pretty stone bridge and climb towards the Rajas houses. Continue uphill to enter the Vallon de la Muande and follow the torrent on the right bank, then on the left bank after a second stone bridge. At the shepherd's hut, cross the gently sloping slabs to reach the refuge hidden behind this small glacial lock. THE PARC DES ECRINS, A FRAGILE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT TO PROTECT When hiking in the Parc des Ecrins, you must respect the regulations that allow you to enjoy this exceptional natural area: do not leave the trails, dogs are forbidden even on a leash, do not pick flowers or collect fossils, minerals, animals..., do not throw anything on the ground (bring your own garbage). Nature thanks you! NOTES - The refuge is guarded from mid-June to mid-September and offers snacks during the day. - The Lac des Fétoules is signposted from the refuge. - From the refuge, you can hike for several days: Lac des Bêches (2h) and Lac des Rouies (4h) can be discovered from the refuge.

A beautiful, slightly challenging hike with one of the best views of the Écrins at the end. From Champhorent the path climbs steadily to Clot du Sert. On the way down, take a detour to the hamlet of Champébran, and discover the small water mills that line the path. TECHNICAL INFORMATION Start: Champhorent parking lot Height difference: 450m Duration: 2h00 Distance: 2.3 km ROUTE : From the parking lot go back up to the road and follow the path towards Champébran. then take the direction of Clot du Sert. SIGHTSEEING - The Écrins and the Fétoules - The water mills of Champébran Dogs must be kept on a leash at all times due to the presence of herding dogs at certain times of the year.

Families with some hiking experience will love this walk in the magnificent Lavey Valley. Along the way, enjoy the views of the incredible peaks around you, reaching between 3,300 and 3,600 metres! You will also come across the ruins of several old chalets, as well as two stone bridges from the 17th century - a great way to combine sport and culture with the family! A refreshing, shady hike on a sunny day, To follow this trail is to be surprised by the diversity of landscapes and atmospheres through mountain pastures and forests. TECHNICAL INFORMATION : Start :Parking du Clot Difference in altitude: 160m Duration: 2h30 Distance: 4 km ROUTE : From the parking lot, follow the signs for Pré Clot, taking the steep path to the RD 530. As you cross the road, turn right onto the road and the path is 50m on the left. From Pré Clot go back down via Bénardiére, then take the small road to Le Clot on your left.

A very varied hike, including meadows and glaciers. Nights in mountain huts to enjoy the sunrises and sunsets! DAY 1: TECHNICAL INFORMATION Starting point: Le Clot (hamlet below to St Christophe en Oisans) Elevation gain: 535 m Duration: 2h15 ROUTE: The day is spent outside of the National Park, but dogs are not advisable (the two following days are inside the Park boundary). Walk down through Le Clot, cross the Vénéon and turn right down to the junction leading to Les Granges (45 mins.). Then follow the signs up to the Refuge d'Alpe du Pin (90 mins.). Spend the night in this small family-run mountain hut at the foot of the Lauranoure. DAY 2: TECHNICAL INFORMATION Starting point: Refuge de l'Alpe du Pin Elevation gain: 600 m Duration: 5 hours ROUTE: Explore the Vallon de la Mariande and then walk down via La Gaussaudière and back up to the Refuge de la Lavey. Night at the mountain hut. DAY 3: TECHNICAL INFORMATION Starting point: Refuge of la Lavey to walk up to the Lac des Bêches Elevation gain: 604 m Duration: 2 hours ROUTE: Walk up to the lake and then back down to Champhorent, then to Le Clot following the right-hand bank of the Vénéon. DURING THE HIKE/ There are lovely views all the way up the path leading up opposite St Christophe en Oisans. The little stone mountain hut is perched on a look-out point over the Vénéon valley. EXTRA INFO: The warden provides lovely snacks (!) and can suggest ideas for walks from the hut.

A sporty, aerial route above Saint Christophe below the Aiguille du Plat de la Selle. Le Plat de la Selle is a demanding route that winds its way through the pristine beauty of the Écrins. Be prepared to conquer steep trails and traverse varied landscapes combining rugged rock and gentle alpine vegetation. TECHNICAL INFORMATION : Start: Car park at the edge of the village Difference in altitude: 1000 m Round trip time: 5h00 Distance: 11 km ROUTE : Leave the car in Saint Christophe and take the path out of the village to Pré-Clot. After Pré-Clot, turn left onto the path that climbs towards Plat de la Selle. Steep ascent up to 2500 m. The descent above Saint Christophe is long and requires vigilance. Return to Saint Christophe via the hamlet of Les Prés. THINGS TO SEE ALONG THE WAY : You may come across a herd of sheep guarded during the summer.

This path opposite St-Christophe offers a beautiful panorama all the way up. On arrival, you'll discover the Alpe du Pin refuge, built entirely of stone and overlooking the Vénéon valley from its belvedere. Little-known and discreet, it has everything to delight your heart, mind and calves. You can count on a warm welcome and delicious meals from the janitors. Then follow the Champébran path with its little water mills along the way. At Champébran, descend to Champhorent, then take the road to the Lavey parking lot to join the Clot path. Descend in the shade of conifers before taking the steep path up to Pré Clot. As you cross the road, turn right and the path is 50m on the left. At Pré Clot, take the same path as before to return to Saint Christophe en Oisans. SIGHTSEEING - Les Fétoules, Lauranoure - The Mariande and La Muande valleys

Starting from the Refuge de la Lavey, carry on up the Vallon de la Muande and then take the path up towards the Tete des Fétoules. At 2249 m, Lac des Fétoules is a small mountain lake just the way we like them! Set on a small grassy plateau, the view over the valley and the Écrins glaciers is magical. A great hike to do with an overnight stay at the Lavey refuge for families who want to experience a real immersion in the heart of the Oisans mountains and the Parc des Écrins. TECHNICAL INFORMATION : Start: Lavey refuge Ascent: 452 m Duration: 2 hours Distance: 10.8 km Level: difficult ROUTE : After the refuge, cross the torrent de la Muande and turn left towards the Lac des Fétoules. Winding ascent over scree and grassy slopes to Lac des Fétoules. The descent is then quite steep to reach the refuge path. You can return via Lac des Fétoules, a little-frequented route at the foot of the Tête des Fétoules. HIKING IN THE HEART OF THE ECRINS NATIONAL PARK The Écrins massif is an exceptional area, open to all, with a rare natural, cultural and landscape heritage. This cable car links Venosc village to the 2 Alpes ski resort in only 8 minutes! The Venosc gondola lift allows pedestrians, mountain bikers, residents and workers to reach the resort.

The new Télémixte du Diable allows skiers, pedestrians and mountain bikers to access 2400m of altitude and the Diable sector. In winter, the Télémixte du Diable, a new lift with alternating 6-seater seats and 6-seater cabins, takes skiers and pedestrians up to the Crêtes sector. In summer, both beginners and experienced pedestrians can join the walks in the area, and mountain bikers can find themselves at the heart of the Bike Park, with trails for all levels.

Perched on an Alpine prairie, at the frontier with the high mountains, the Olan refuge provides a unique panorama on La Chapelle-en-Valgaudemar, the prestigious Olan cirque, the Cime du Vallon... The ascent to the refuge from Villard Loubière has become a great hiking classic. Small dormitories with duvets, convivial dining room, hot showers and large equipped terraces. A stop on the GR54 footpath that should not be missed. Ideal starting point for the Pic de Turbat, with 3000m of easy access. A stop on the Tour de l'Oisans (GR54 footpath) that should not be missed. At the heart of a mountain cirque, between Le Pavé, Roche Méane and Pic Gaspard, on the shores of a glacial lake, this small mountain refuge offers a trip having an Himalayan air in one of the most secret and wild valleys from the massif des Ecrins. The ascent route is 4 hours starting from Arsine and has 1150m height difference Mountain ascencions from the refuge: Pic northern Cavales, Pave, Gaspard pic, Emma Pointe, Pointe des Chamois ...

The cemetery is a magnificent memorial to the history of mountaineering in Oisans. It is home to the tombs of mountaineers who set out to conquer the summits, as well as valley guides and their patient wives. The oldest tombs, two obelisks side by side, are those of Emile Zsigmondy, an eminent Austrian mountaineer, and Ernest Torrent, who both lost their lives on the Meije in 1885 and 1896. The tomb of Pierre Gaspard, a local boy who was the first to climb the Meije, with Emmanuel Boileau de Castelnau, on 16 August 1877, takes the form of a double rock topped with an ice axe. The many foreign names on the stelae show that these mountaineers often came from far away to conquer the summits. In addition to these tombs, there are numerous commemorative plaques set in stone at the entrance of the cemetery.

Located in the centre of Saint-Christophe, just a stone's throw from the moving cemetery where the famous mountain guides from La Bérarde and the Vénéon are buried, the Museum is a must-see for all mountain lovers. In this high-perched village, a little lost for some, the museum gets to the heart of the matter. in the heart of the mountains. In the heart of the mountains, 400m² of space evoke the history of mountaineering and the strong emotions of this practice synonymous with adventure, commitment, passion and freedom. Discover this high-altitude territory through the adventures of pioneering mountaineers and early guides, including Gaspard, winner of La Meije. A charming stone chapel is located in the heart of a small perched hamlet The interior is simple with modest furnishings. It is well enlightened by a colorful stained glass. Its atmosphere reflects the simplicity of life in the village in XIXth century. In almost every hamlet, even the highest ones like Lanchatra, you'll find a chapel. This "secondary" religious building for a parish was not the property of the church, but of the private funds that enabled its construction. These funds could have come from a wealthy family, a lord or, as was the case in the hamlet of Puy le Haut, from an entire community in gratitude to a patron saint for protection or during an exceptional event. Since the separation laws of 1905, most churches and chapels are owned by the communes.

Gioberney glacial cirque offers a 180° panorama of the magnificent Rouies glaciers, the Condamine at the foot of the Bans... Today, in retreat, (the polished glaciers remain as slabs  smoothed by the erosive action of these ‘ice monsters’) a witness to their past.

Near to the pass, you will admire small grey-green cushions scattered with white flowers: this is the androsace helvetica, a rare protected species. This altitude plant is perfectly acclimatised to the hostile environment. This is also the case for the mountain saixifrage. Both like limestone, which is not the case of moss campion, small green cushion with pink flowers, or the Arctic alpine forget me not, a small blue-flowered plant that prefer the crystalline rocks here and there across the pass.

During this walk, the path takes you past brittle, black sedimentary rocks. At the pass, they come into contact with light-coloured crystalline gneiss: the contrast is surprising! There is a geological fault here where monumental forces have been pushing against each other for millions of years.

As you get to the last leg before the pass, you may well hear high-pitched whistles. If you are lucky, you will catch sight of the composer of this melody: the wallcreeper, which is a beautiful red, black and white bird. Defying verticality, the wallcreeper uses its long-clawed feet to latch onto the rock faces in search of insects and spiders. Its long beak then enables it to draw them out of the cracks in the rock.

L'Olan is a major summit in the Écrins massif. Il culminates at 3564 m and is composed of three summits of which the highest is the Northern summit. The Olan was climbed for the first time right to the central summit on the 8th July 1875, then the Northern summit on the 29th June 1877 by the famous W.B.A Coolidge and his guide Almer. A normal route setting out from the Olan refuge can, with a guide or the right mountaineering knowledge, be the goal of an ascent in the Valgaudemar.

After many complaints from hikers, the decision was made in 2010 to employ the necessary means to improve security on the route. It took a mechanical 'spider' digger a day and a half to climb all the way up to the pass. It then dug out the footpath as it went down the black shale on a 40° degree slope. Each year, serious manual work is undertaken to ensure that hikers have safe access.

The church of Venosc is a mixture of several styles. Built in the 9th century, it has undergone numerous modifications over the years. Romanesque church dating from the 9th century, but which has been modified and enlarged over the years. The modern nave was built in 1910 thanks to the Carthusian fathers. The altarpiece dates from the 17th century and is in the baroque style. The two saints are St Paul and St Peter. St. Peter and St. Paul are inseparable. They are the two pillars of the Church and tradition has never celebrated one without the other. St. Peter is the titular of the church and St. Paul the patron of the parish. The church is one of the best endowed in the Oisans, partly thanks to the donations of rich donors such as Jacques Rochette and peddlers who made their fortune. The bell tower houses the oldest bell found in the Oisans, dating from 1622.

The refuge is set on a magnificent belvedere, so you'll enjoy a gentle hike through unspoilt countryside. Around the refuge you'll find many activities such as hiking (tour du grand Cond, lac de la Mariande, lac du Salude, col de la Mariande...), mountaineering (tête de Lauranoure, col de la haute pisse...) and climbing (2 big routes in the pierroux, 3 routes around the Froide Pisse waterfall). While bivouacs are tolerated in the vicinity of the refuges (check with the wardens), campers are not counted in the stocks. TEMPORARILY CLOSED Situated at an altitude of 1797 m, 2 hours' walk from the hamlet of Champhorrent on an easy path up the Muande torrent, this is a place where mountaineers, hikers and mountain people can meet and share their emotions. At the refuge you'll find everything you need for this special adventure, and the wardens are on hand to advise, inform and guide you in your choice of itinerary. At the foot of accessible glaciers and lakes (la Muande, les Rouies, les Sellettes, les Bêches, les Fétoules...), fauna, flora and herds are waiting for you, and everyone, from the youngest to the oldest, from the contemplative to the adventurous, from the climber to the walker, will find what they're looking for. You'll be able to sample organic and local produce, all in a creative and colorful cuisine. Hut (2130 m) guarded daily from mid-June to the first weekend of October and on weekends from late May. 68 places available when guarded, 9 seats during unguarded. Access in 4 hours from l'Alleau parking (934 m) in Venosc. From this Hamlet, take direction "Refuge de la Muzelle" after the small bridge. Follow the winding path leading to the ruins of Pleney. The path continues near the torrent until "Clot du Stella". Cross the bridge and follow "Ardoisières", then "Les marches" before you arrive at the lake. . IGN: AND 3336. Trail No. 509 OBP.

Situated at an altitude of 2350 m, this large building constructed in 1957 was carried away by an avalanche two years later. A witness to this is a concrete slab below the refuge. Rebuilt in 1966, it was definitively extended in 1978 with a capacity of 54 places. A stage of the Tour de l'Oisans (GR 54), it welcomes hikers in the summer season and provides a shelter in the winter; it belongs to the Club Alpin Français.

Perched on an Alpine prairie, at the frontier with the high mountains, the Olan refuge provides a unique panorama on La Chapelle-en-Valgaudemar, the prestigious Olan cirque, the Cime du Vallon... A stopover for mountaineers and hikers: a mountain road to the Refuge des Souffles. Shared room and kitchen upstairs, running water and fountain. Meals by reservation. Access from La Chapelle-en-Valgaudemar in 4 hours; elevation: 1245 metres.

The ascent to the refuge from Villard Loubière has become a great hiking classic. Small dormitories with duvets, convivial dining room, hot showers and large equipped terraces. A stop on the GR54 footpath that should not be missed. Ideal starting point for the Pic de Turbat, with 3000m of easy access. A stop on the Tour de l'Oisans (GR54 footpath) that should not be missed. Snacks and refreshments possible. Access in 3 hours; elevation: 900 metres.

Perched at 2423 m, at the foot of the Rouies, this real eagle’s nest was restored at the beginning of the year 2000. It uses solar energy and offers dry toilets which are signs of the edifice’s environmental integration. Situated almost at the highest point of this hike, it is often the place for a short, beneficial rest, beside the nearby pond.

At the heart of a mountain cirque, between Le Pavé, Roche Méane and Pic Gaspard, on the shores of a glacial lake, this small mountain refuge offers a trip having an Himalayan air in one of the most secret and wild valleys from the massif des Ecrins. The ascent route is 4 hours starting from Arsine and has 1150m height difference Mountain ascencions from the refuge: Pic northern Cavales, Pave, Gaspard pic, Emma Pointe, Pointe des Chamois ...

Evariste Chancel refuge (2508 m) has 39 beds and is located on a terrace overlooking the valley of the Romanche river and La Grave village, where you will enjoy a magnificent viewpoint over the valley of the Haute Romanche. During summer the refuge is accessible from the cable car station along Lake Puy Vachier (1h). For the more energetic, there is also a trail from La Grave (3h) Easy trails. *To do in summer, starting from the refuge: Mountaineering: The Râteau , the Pic de la Grave Hiking: Col des Ruillans, Brêche Pacave Fishing in Lake Puy Vachier In winter, the refuge is accessible only on skis (skiing, snowboarding, telemark ...). The snow is not groomed, trails are not marked, and that's precisely what attracts true mountain lovers. Adele Planchard is this lady who bequeathed his fortune to build the refuge, punctuating the ascent itirenary of the Grande Ruine. Despite its "high mountain" environment , its long access walk is simple and beautiful. From the refuge, you have a beautiful view of the row of Summit Peak Neige Cordier to La Roche Méane which rises to 3765 m (Pointe Breevort). Pied du Col access pass (5h) on a marked trail. During Summer there is no need of technical equipment.
