Là encore une boucle sous le signe de la forêt de l'Aigoual, traversée de hameaux pittoresques et de la vallée du Trévezel. Au loin vous devinerez les villages de Trèves puis de Dourbies. Au Moyen Age et jusqu'en 1870, le village très catholique de Camprieu n'avait ni église, ni curé, ni cimetière. Les habitants se rendaient pour cela au hameau de Saint Sauveur des Pourcils. Pour transporter leurs défunts jusqu'à ce cimetière éloigné, il fallait emprunter le chemin des morts... Sentier sans difficulté particulière, accessible aux familles. Sentier de découverte Au Moyen-âge et jusqu’en 1870, le village de (St Sauveur)Camprieu n’avait ni église, ni cimetière ; ceux-ci se trouvaient au hameau de Saint Sauveur des Pourcils.Pour y venir enterrer leurs morts, les habitants du village empruntaient ce chemin appelé pour la circonstance « Chemin des Morts ».Le cercueil était porté par les hommes ; à chacun des lieux de pause aménagés, on récitait le « De Profundis ».Le curé de St Sauveur des Pourcils venait à la rencontre du cortège jusqu’en un lieu marqué d’une croix en pierre, où il donnait la Bénédiction.St Sauveur des Pourcils qui appartient à l’Office National des Forêts , est un des points de départ de l’arboretum appelé le Sentier des Arbres et des Arbustes .Au retour on peut admirer la résurgence du Bonheur à l’Abîme de Bramabiau , et plus en amont, la perte du Bonheur. Intérêts : la rivière souterraine et l'histoire d'Edouard-Alfred Martel, la Boissière abandonnée, l'église de St Sauveur des Pourcils, l'arboretum , la légende du rouge-gorge et des sapins toujours verts... Berceau du reboisement de l'Aigoual, ce hameau semble aujourd'hui abandonné dans son dense écrin forestier. Saint Sauveur révèle pourtant une histoire riche et intense. Parmi la centaine d'espèces d'arbres présentes dans l'arboretum, partez à la découverte du Pin pleureur de l'Himalaya, de l'Araucaria, du Cyprès de Lawson, de nombreux feuillus et profitez de la vue sur le hameau à travers l'alignement de Calocèdres. Sentier sans difficulté particulière, accessible aux familles. Sentier d'interprétation Un grand programme de reboisement a été mené sur le massif de l’Aigoual à la fin du XIXe siècle, sous la houlette du forestier Georges Fabre et du botaniste Charles Flahault. Celui-ci a été parmi les premiers à pressentir l’importance des essences exotiques en matière de reboisement. C’est dans ce contexte et pour étudier le comportement des espèces dans différentes conditions écologiques (altitude, régime des pluies, nature des sols, etc.) qu’un réseau de dix arboretums fut créé entre 1885 et 1903.Saint Sauveur des Pourcils fut l’un des grands domaines agricoles de l’Aigoual, achetés par l’administration forestière à la fin du XIXe siècle. Le hameau ne comporte qu’une église et quelques bâtiments, dont un imposant corps de ferme aux allures de château. Bramabiau is one of those grandiose and bizarre works of nature. A veritable cradle of French speleology, the tour is 1 km long and very accessible. In the heart of the hamlet of Saint-Sauveur-des-Pourcils, come and discover one of the seven arboretums on the Aigoual massif, the result of a major reforestation program carried out at the end of the 19th century, Today, this hamlet seems abandoned in its dense forest setting. Yet Saint-Sauveur-des-Pourcils reveals a rich and intense history. Among the hundred or so species of trees in the arboretum, you can discover some exotic species. Saint-Sauveur-des-Pourcils was one of the great agricultural estates of the Aigoual, purchased by the forestry administration at the end of the 19th century. The hamlet has only a church and a few buildings, including an imposing farmhouse resembling a château. Nearby, the walk continues through part of the arboretum, featuring a wide variety of tree species and some remarkable specimens.

Les toits de chaume sont une tradition architecturale de la vallée de Dourbies . Sur ces sols granitiques et sur ces terres siliceuses, le seigle s'épanouit dans de bonnes conditions. Cette céréale apportait autrefois aux populations des montagnes la litière pour les animaux et une matière première - le chaume - pour recouvrir les toitures. En voie de disparition, les toits de chaume font à l'heure actuelle l'objet d'un projet de rénovation. Des maisons couvertes de chaume sont visibles au hameau des Laupiettes ou à la Borie du Pont.

In the 19th century, Mont Aigoual was almost totally bare of trees. Intensive use of the forest and the pressure of transhumant grazing together with the harsh local climate caused devastating floods. The rich vegetation of the grazing grounds was replaced by heather pastures and many gullies. In the valleys huddling at the foot of Mont Aigoual, terrible floods pushing tons of stones downstream carried off roads and pastureland. In response, a reforestation programme was launched in the second half of the 19th century, which created the forest you see today. Nowadays, the forested Aigoual massif protects the valleys while at the same time providing a space for economic production, biodiversity and leisure.

Marker 5If you look up, you will see two oval holes on the beech trunks. They are black-woodpecker nesting chambers. This jet black bird with its red “beret”  is the largest of Europe's woodpeckers, and rather timid. Its diet consists of ants and insects living in wood. Its prowess at hammering and digging seems quite out of proportion to its size. The opening you see gives onto a chamber with a volume of about 30 litres, which a woodpecker has dug out of healthy wood, using only its bill as a tool, over two to three weeks. In May, there will be 3 to 5 eggs in a nesting chamber. Since the number of trees with nesting chambers is limited, they have been marked with a triangle or banded in yellow to make sure that they are preserved.

Located in the Borgne Valley, in the commune of Les Plantiers, our Fontfouillouse gîte welcomes you to an unspoilt valley at the foot of a 12th-century Romanesque church. In the midst of the Cévennes chestnut grove, we have created our group gîte.
