To build their houses, the inhabitants of Junas had the privilege of collecting the stone off-cuts, hence their massive appearance. A fun and educational walk to discover how pastoral activity has transformed the landscape. A trail that takes you on a journey through the garrigue, a Mediterranean landscape shaped by man's pastoral activities over the millennia and up until the 1950s. The Chemin des laines owes its name to the scraps of wool hung on bushes by ewes as they grazed in the garrigue. Today, many vestiges remain along the paths between Vaunage and Sommierois, including the typical dry-stone constructions known as "capitelles", which have recently been restored. The Chapel, a 17th-century gem, is part of the former Ursuline convent. Today, it hosts exhibitions in a unique historical setting. Located in the heart of Sommières, the Ursuline Chapel, with its monumental façade, is a precious reminder of the past. Built in the 17th century, it is part of the former Ursuline convent, a majestic building that now houses an art and culture centre. After serving as a military hospital during the First World War, the building was purchased by the municipality in 1977 and renamed Espace Lawrence Durrell, in tribute to the British writer who lived in Sommières. Today, the Ursuline Chapel hosts temporary exhibitions in a 107 m² room decorated with a gallery and a stained glass rose window, offering a unique setting in which to discover contemporary works. Another 55 m² room is dedicated to the artist Jacqueline Gaussen Salmon (1906-1948), where around fifteen of her paintings depicting familiar landscapes such as the Roman bridge and the ramparts are on permanent display. Did you know? The construction of the Ursuline convent was financed by the Bocaud family, lords of Jacou. Philippe de Bocaud, in particular, played a key role in the founding of this convent in 1660, which welcomed the Ursuline nuns and served as a school for young girls in the region. Visit: Today, the convent has been converted into a media library and the chapel into exhibition rooms (free access during opening hours). A Protestant legacy from the 19th century, the Junas temple stands out for its sober, elegant architecture, a testament to the local religious heritage. Built around 1840, the Junas temple epitomizes 19th-century Protestant architecture, with its rectangular plan, sober facade with oculus and wooden door framed by ashlar. Its central stone bell tower, adorned with a small trefoil oculus, dominates the building. Four lateral buttresses reinforce the structure. Protected by a gate and accessible by a staircase, the temple is said to house an adjoining crypt. Recent restoration work has enabled the interior to be restored, enhancing the value of this place of remembrance at the heart of Junas' heritage.

Junas is famous for its old quarries, a must-see place for walks and discoveries, to share with your family. Over 2,000 years of rock extraction using manual methods unchanged from Gallo-Roman times until the mid-20th century, when quarrying ceased. Since medieval times, quarrymen have patiently dug into the stone to extract the material needed to build their homes. Because of cracks in the rock, they ended up leaving behind "leashes" that resemble candles in the heart of the quarries (material left behind because it has a defect making it unsuitable for construction). They provide a sumptuous backdrop for the various events on offer during the summer season, including the Rencontres de la Pierre, which brings together stonemasons from all over Europe, and an internationally renowned Jazz Festival. In addition, the Carrières and the village are home to works by stonemasons, sculptors, mosaicists and blacksmiths from all over the world.
