Junas is famous for its old quarries, a must-see place for walks and discoveries, to share with your family.
Over 2,000 years of rock extraction using manual methods unchanged from Gallo-Roman times until the mid-20th century, when quarrying ceased.
Since medieval times, quarrymen have patiently dug into the stone to extract the material needed to build their homes. Because of cracks in the rock, they ended up leaving behind "leashes" that resemble candles in the heart of the quarries (material left behind because it has a defect making it unsuitable for construction). They provide a sumptuous backdrop for the various events on offer during the summer season, including the Rencontres de la Pierre, which brings together stonemasons from all over Europe, and an internationally renowned Jazz Festival.
In addition, the Carrières and the village are home to works by stonemasons, sculptors, mosaicists and blacksmiths from all over the world.
