Description

Opening soon. The château is getting a makeover in 2025! A place steeped in history...
Following several months of restoration work, Sommières Castle will reopen its doors to the public from Wednesday 1 July 2026.
Rediscover this iconic monument, which bears witness to nearly a thousand years of history, through a tour that combines heritage, exhibition design and an immersive experience.

A bit of history…

The Bermond Tower, Guardian of Time
Built from the 12th century onwards, Sommières Castle has stood the test of time, enduring sieges, alterations and occupations. During the Wars of Religion, Protestant prisoners were held there, leaving behind historical graffiti that can still be seen today.

An Immersive Tour at the Heart of the Middle Ages
The castle offers you a unique experience exploring:
- The 22-metre-high Bermond Tower, with exceptional panoramic views and an orientation board.
- The chapel, formerly a Huguenot prison, transformed into an immersive space featuring a film, video, touchscreen and exhibition
- The monumental courtyard and ramparts, examples of medieval military architecture.
Also:
- Large wooden play structures in the courtyard
- Information panels on the Sommières region and documents on the castle’s history, including a display on ‘500 Years of Protestant Heritage in Sommières’ in the upper chapel.
- A film screening on the history of the castle
- A treasure hunt for children, guided tours and children’s workshops (booking required), offering a captivating journey back to the Middle Ages.

Whether you’re a history buff, a heritage enthusiast or visiting with your family, head to the heart of one of the most beautiful medieval fortresses in the Gard and enjoy an experience full of discoveries!
