GOOD TO KNOW :
Manual quarrying began in the Gallo-Roman period and was abandoned at the end of the Second World War.
The extracted shell limestone, soft and porous and easy to cut, was widely used for the construction of local houses and for works such as the inner galleries of the Nîmes arena.
To build their houses, the inhabitants of Junas had the privilege of collecting the stone off-cuts, hence their massive appearance.
Over the years, stone cutters and sculptors have left their mark on the Carrières and the village.
