GOOD TO KNOW :
Since prehistoric times, people have settled on the Vaunage, a large, beautiful plain between Nîmes, the banks of the Vidourle and the Mediterranean. In Roman times, the road linking Nîmes to Sommières brought the region to life, with its many farms.
The present-day village of Calvisson was formed in the Middle Ages with the establishment of the priory of Saint Saturnin, of which the church remains the most beautiful witness, followed by the construction of a castle on the heights in the 11th century, which bears witness to the liveliness of the Wars of Religion. Indeed, Calvisson is one of the high points in the history of Protestant resistance in the lowlands.
The village took off in the 18th and 19th centuries, thanks to its wine merchants. A new art of living took hold, reflected in the construction of fine residences.
