This part of Porzay rises up to hide the Aulne Valley and Châteaulin. You can’t miss this new permanent trail at the foot of the wind turbines just after the town of Cast. You’re no longer on the coast, you’re at the foot of the mountains and the forests that go with it (Bois de St Gildas). From the start, you’ll be aware of fantastic local heritage, including St Gildas chapel and its fountain. This trail through the woods beckons you to enjoy a wonderful walk with your family, which might not be relaxing for your legs, but will certainly relax your mind.

This walking circuit beckons you to come and explore Ster Goanez Valley. Follow various sunken pathways that thread their way through the wooded landscape. You’ll reach the old Rosporden-Plouescat railway, where the train that ran along the rails was nicknamed ‘the Spud Train’ because of all the potatoes it used to transport.

The jagged cliffs of Déolen with their rocky escarpments, offer a fabulous view over the Crozon Peninsula and the Tas de Pois. You’ll notice the remains of a slate quarry, whose tunnels are now home to some of the largest bats in Brittany, the Greater Horseshoe Bat. You’ll pass two locks before leaving the tow path and heading in to the countryside around Châteauneuf, with its woodlands and streams. The path then joins up with another trail ‘In the footsteps of Paul Sérusier’, which is dedicated to the painter who lived in Châteauneuf du Faou. You’ll cross a street named after him and discover this painter’s ’green valley’.

This walk takes you on a tour of Bénodet: from the Anse de Penfoul, it follows along the coast up to the Mer Blanche. It’s a change to explore the varied coastline with its mudflat, boat cemetery, ports, the mouth of the River Odet, the beaches and Letty lagoon. The walk returns via the cove of the little mill and cuts through narrow streets and pathways, bringing you back to your starting point.

Large car park near the old train station of Plouescat / Rosporden. You’ll start your circuit by passing in front of the archaeological site ‘Ti Ar Boudiged’, with a prehistoric stone slab sating back to 3000BC, before following part of the ancient Roman Road. Further on, a pretty stone bridge takes you across the River Elez. Next, there’s Ménez Du hill, from where you can see the crests of the Arrée Mountains, from Roch Trédudon and as far as Mont St Michel, before following part of a former railway that will take you back to Brennilis.

Unbeatable views towards the southern slopes of the Arrée Mountains, passing near the drinking-water reservoir in Brennilis, followed by Kerelcun and its magnificent restored mill. After crossing the Lorient-Roscoff axis at Coat Mocun bridge, this old Roman Road will lead you to the springs of Roudoudour and the mystical mashlands of Yeun Elez. In Kervéguénet, visit the museum of Youdig, a miniature village from the 16th century, with gites and an inn. Finally, you can head back to Brennilis, where you began.

From the village of La Forêt-Fouesnant, walk along the Allée du Mesmeur and admire the Cornouaille Golf Course and the 18th-century Manoir de Mesmeur. Then cross the footbridge at Port-La-Forêt and take the path that leads to the Vieux Port, a charming and picturesque spot. Enjoy the view over La Forêt cove. The path is suitable for pushchairs. The river Scorff, 75 km long, rises in Mellionnec in the Côtes d'Armor and joins the river Blavet in the bay of Lorient before finally flowing into the Atlantic Ocean. This natural river, a Natura 2000 site protecting its species and habitats, supplies drinking water to some of the population in the greater Lorient area. A natural boundary between the parishes of Plouay and Berné, it runs through the Pontkalleg Valley, named after the ancient seigneury of Pontkalleg. Comprising two arches, the Pont Neuf was built at the end of the 19th century on the site of an earlier structure. Since the Middle Ages, the Scorff has been exploited for its hydraulic power, with the creation of grain mills. Its name, skorv, is Breton for “sluice gate” or “pond outlet”. Its food resources were also appreciated. Under the Ancien Régime, and again in the 19th century, fisheries were built on this river to catch eels during the autumn downstream migration. Made of stone dikes, they formed a bottleneck where the fishing net was strung. Now in ruins, their remains can be seen at low water. Archaeologist Daniel Tanguy has identified six between Pont Neuf and the Coat Cren mill, and a dozen between Pont Neuf and Poulhibet.

In 1281, Jean 1st, Duke of Brittany, created the Pont Caillouc castle estate. Established in Berné, it extended into the surrounding parishes. Jean II added a pond with a dike and a manor house. He also settled peasant farmers in the area. They cleared the forest and built villages and enclosures nearby. Thanks to various archaeological surveys and excavations, six enclosures and six villages containing around sixty buildings and covering an area of around eighteen hectares have been found in what is now the Pontkalleg national forest. One of these villages has been excavated and partially restored, with a guided trail to provide a better understanding of the peasant way of life in the Middle Ages. You can discover it by going up the path on your left.

Located in the former forest of the Pontkalleg estate, Pontkalleg national forest covers 543 hectares. Bought by the French government in the 1970s and managed by the Office National des Forêts, it was composed mainly of pedunculate oak and beech. A hunting reserve for the nobility, its high forest and coppice woods were exploited by their owners, notably in the 19th century for charcoal production. In 1973, the forest was divided into 52 parcels of 10 hectares each. The replanted plots, each made up of a single species alternating between conifers and American oaks, were cut back in recent years and replanted with new species. The slopes are dominated by beech forests, a protected Natura 2000 habitat. Along the way, you'll discover beech, oak, birch, holly, mountain ash, wild pear, yew, elder and hawthorn trees. This diverse woodland promotes the development of saplings, brambles and ferns, bluebells, daisies and moss on the floor. It is also a refuge and food store for mammals, birds, molluscs and insects.

The mill at Coat Cren, deliberately located on this bend in the river Scorff to create a pond, retains its magnificent ashlar sill, while a fish pass facilitates the free movement of salmon and eels. Its wheel is still used to generate electricity. This mill, already present in the 18th century, was part of the Pontkalleg castle estate. A double turner, i.e. fitted with two wheels, it was modified and raised in the 1950s for flour production. It stopped being used in the 1970’s. Following the sunken path you've just come down, the inhabitants of Berné used to cross the river at the mill to get to Plouay.

On your right, you can see the remains of the irrigated meadows of Coat Cren. Water from the creek was diverted in winter to water the meadows and improve hay production by warming the soil, resulting in an early start to vegetation. The channel, which runs along the slope for over 300 metres, distributes water down small gutters. The Breton name for irrigated meadows, flourenn evokes the sweetness of hay cut early in spring. There could be two cuts before the cattle came to graze. An illustrated lectern helps you understand how they worked.

Fed by springs on the heights of Kerlucas, Lézot and Kerguescamff, the Moulin de Kersily stream takes its name from the mill of the former seigneury located a little higher up. Three small reservoirs, two of them well upstream of the mill, were used to turn the wheel on this modest stream nestling in a small, steep-sided valley. The surrounding woods and ancient meadows are home to characteristic flora and fauna, as well as protected species such as the Quimper snail, which thrives in the thick litter of this dark, damp environment. Named when a naturalist observed it near Quimper in 1817, the Hélix quimperiana is easily recognized by its flat, translucent shell, allowing its body to be seen.

Passing through Nezerth village, you will get an idea of the quality of the rural heritage of the Plouay hamlets. The farms, dating back as far the 16th century, used natural building materials, granite, earth, wood, rye straw which today has been replaced by slate.  The bread ovens, washhouses and wells use similar building techniques. Le Nezerth has a dozen or so old, preserved buildings, houses, barns and bread ovens, scattered around and side by side, through which the narrow street winds. Although they have been altered, these old farmhouses still have some of the round-arched basket-handle doors characteristic of the 17th and 18th centuries, and some of the more elaborate features, such as this house, which combines a round-arched basket-handle door with a small round-arched bay topped with a fleur-de-lis.

Plancoët was the safest ford down on the ria. It is also there that the strength of the river could be used. As early as 1223, writings mention mills, like those you can see on each side of the bridge, turned into houses today.

Plancoët is also a port at the back of a ria. In the middle of the 19th century, the light boats were numerous to dock there and load or unload grains, apples, wood, « marne » ou « tangue » of the sea (mud to spread on the fields, used as a fertiliser on the crops) The arrival of the train in 1879 meant its decline.

Going down the steps you arrive in a valley away from the main road. In Chateaubriand's time, these houses were the only ones in the hamlet. Nazareth district was an craftemen's district. The façades gave out on the street; the shop was held at the ground floor (the old shop windows can be made out on the façades) and the people lived on the first floor. At the back was a back-shop, a work-shop, sometimes an oven, a garden for the food missing and at the bottom of the valley, water, the essential element to every and any craft. "My grand-mother lived in the only street of the hamlet de l'Abbaye, a pretty small house of which the gardens went down in terraces to a valley and at the end of which a small fountain, surrounded by willow trees, could be found. The small manor Des Portes is rebuilt in the 19th century by the Danican family, St-Malo shipowners. In 1978 it becomes the municipal town-hall after having been bought a few years earlier. The park, surrounded by high stone walls is a leisure area nowadays. It houses a few children's games and an agreable camping site, most of the year. It is also a place where the flowers abound, the village actually obtained a regional prize for its flowering and is proud to have the 1flower label.

This area by the lake is heaven for fishermen, numerous to come to tickle black-basses and pikes. Everything is laid out: parking-lot for cars and recreational vehicles, picnic tables, bridges and wild landscapes.

The sports field (foot-ball, tennis...), strawberry fields and a camper-van area can be found there.
